  • The Fruitbearing Society and Its Memorable Member Emblems
The Fruitbearing Society and its memorable member emblems A reader from Germany here, with one large fun fact. One day, while tracking the name “Levin” from the Nazi era into the current German aristocratic families Marschall and Schulenburg, I happened upon the 17th century Fruitbearing Society, where several Levins were assembled. The full member list contained, it seemed, every aristocrat and his brother. Among the names were 7 Levin, 2 Achaz, 2 Achatz, 1 Achatius, 1 Job, 5 Jobst, 1 Moscherosch. So I looked closer. It was a so-called literary society, the German name “Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft” being more fitting, as they were “bringing” their fruit to others rather than simply bearing it, as we shall see. The society’s logo was a coconut palm tree (see above), and its slogan was to “utilize all”. Its stated goal was the refinement of the German language by purging foreign words, but they had very little to show for it in that regard. This setup was suspicious at first glance, because a society wishing to shield a language from foreign influences would not pick an exotic foreign tree as a logo. Except if the tree wasn’t foreign to them. Let us think: where would such trees grow? Jerusalem, maybe? According to official lore, the society was founded by Ludwig von Anhalt-Köthen (see above, note the cap), who had brought the concept from Italy on August 24th 1617 during the funeral festivities for his sister. With them were his son of the same name, his two entourage courtiers Albrecht Christof and Bernhard von Krosigk, his sister’s three sons Johann Ernst, Friedrich and Wilhelm IV von Sachsen-Weimar (4 more brothers would join later), plus the man who had been the private tutor and entourage to these brothers, Caspar von Teutleben.

In keeping with the Society’s stated aim to promote research on anglo-german relations, the theme chosen was religion and politics in medieval England and germany. the papers cover a wide span of time, from Carolingian Francia to England and germany in the late middle ages, but are held together by a common interest in the complex inter relationship of religion and politics in these years. they vary greatly in length, with some constituting little more than fully refer - enced versions of the orally delivered paper (nelson, Ormrod, and Fößel), and others representing very substantial studies in their own right (görich and Weiler). after a brief preface detailing the background to the collection, the book begins with an introduction (presumably by the editors, though this is not clearly stated). an overview of the volume’s aims is given, as well as summaries of the individual papers. there is little attempt to saying anything new here and the exercise seems to be designed to help the casual reader pick out which article(s) might be of interest. In any case, the summaries given are fair and judicious, although there are a few egregious slips.

McWeeny Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 ABSTRACT GUSTAFSON, ADAM R., Ph.D., June 2011, Interdisciplinary Arts The Artistic Patronage of Albrecht V and the Creation of Catholic Identity in Sixteenth- Century Bavaria Director of Dissertation: Dora Wilson Drawing from a number of artistic media, this dissertation is an interdisciplinary approach for understanding how artworks created under the patronage of Albrecht V were used to shape Catholic identity in Bavaria during the establishment of confessional boundaries in late sixteenth-century Europe. This study presents a methodological framework for understanding early modern patronage in which the arts are necessarily viewed as interconnected, and patronage is understood as a complex and often contradictory process that involved all elements of society. First, this study examines the legacy of arts patronage that Albrecht V inherited from his Wittelsbach predecessors and developed during his reign, from 1550-1579. Albrecht V‟s patronage is then divided into three areas: northern princely humanism, traditional religion and sociological propaganda.

Walerian Meysztowicz.1 The collections in Simancas are not only important for understanding Polish-Spanish relations, but also very effectively illustrate Poland’s foreign policy in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the role the country played in the international arena. In this respect, the Spanish holdings are second only to the Vatican archives. In terms of the quality and quantity of information, not even the holdings of the Vienna archives illuminate Poland’s European politics on such a scale. Meysztowicz was well aware of this, opening his introduction (Introductio) to the first part of the publication with the sentence: “Res gestae Christianitatis sine Archivo Septimacensi cognosci vix possunt.”2 1 Elementa ad Fontium Editiones, vol.

From the Back Cover: FREEDOM AND JUSTICE -- AMERICAN STYLE. 1632 And in northern Germany things couldn't get much worse. Famine. Disease. Religious war laying waste the cities. Only the aristocrats remained relatively unscathed; for the peasants, death was a mercy. 2000 Things are going OK in Grantville, West Virginia, and everybody attending the wedding of Mike Stearn's sister (including the entire local chapter of the United Mine Workers of America, which Mike leads) is having a good time. THEN, EVERYTHING CHANGED. When the dust settles, Mike leads a group of armed miners to find out what happened and finds the road into town is cut, as with a sword. On the other side, a scene out of Hell: a man nailed to a farmhouse door, his wife and daughter attacked by men in steel vests. Faced with this, Mike and his friends don't have to ask who to shoot. At that moment Freedom and Justice, American style, are introduced to the middle of the Thirty Years' War.

  • Instrumentalists and Renaissance Culture, 1420–1600
Instrumentalists and Renaissance Culture, 1420–1600 This innovative and multilayered study of the music and culture of Renaissance instrumentalists spans the early institutionalization of instrumental music from c.1420 to the rise of the basso continuo and newer roles for players around 1600. Employing a broad cultural narrative interwoven with detailed case studies, close readings of eighteen essential musical sources, and analysis of musical images, Victor Coelho and Keith Polk show that instrumental music formed a vital and dynamic element in the artistic landscape, from rote function to creative fantasy. Instrumentalists occupied a central role in courtly ceremonies and private social rituals during the Renaissance, as banquets, dances, processions, religious celebrations, and weddings all required their participation – regardless of social class. Instrumental genres were highly diverse artistic creations, from polyphonic repertories revealing knowledge of notated styles, to improvisation and flexible practices. Understanding the contributions of instrumentalists is essential for any accurate assessment of Renaissance culture. victor coelho is Professor of Music and Director of the Center for Early Music Studies at Boston University, a fellow of Villa I Tatti, the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies in Florence, and a lutenist and guitarist. His books include Music and Science in the Age of Galileo, The Manuscript Sources of Seventeenth- Century Italian Lute Music, Performance on Lute, Guitar, and Vihuela, and The Cambridge Companion to the Guitar. In 2000 he received the Noah Greenberg Award given by the American Musicological Society for outstanding contributions to the performance of early music, resulting in a recording (with Alan Curtis) that won a Prelude Classical Award in 2004.

The study area consists mainly of deciduous wood. In many parts a special form of forestry is used there to keep the original type of woods.
