H3423_P9 Mainul Alom Having lived in Hampshire for 30+ years, I would like to give something back to the community by serving as a Governor within the South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) NHS. The NHS is an integral way of life and the envy of the world, and I strongly believe that it is crucial that the SCAS is protected for all, in the present and the future. I have demonstrated my strong communication skills, both verbal and written, throughout my career; I seek to be innovative in service delivery and am passionate about quality patient care, highly motivated and thrive on new challenges. I realise the SCAS and NHS as a whole has to go through changes if it is to serve the public in the years to come and to be free at the point of use. Also having an Asian background may bring more diversity within the organisation and different view to the already well established Governors. Andy Bartlett Having retired from the Ambulance Service after 43 years both operationally and education I have seen and been involved in many changes both in staff training, equipment and vehicles to ensure the patient gets the best possible treatment. Before retiring as an education manager for the trust staff development was a priority and my aim as a Governor is to help ensure this progressive trust maintains its high standards both in patient care and staff development. Completing an apprenticeship as a carpenter and joiner my interest in the voluntary sector led me to begin my career at Havant Ambulance station in 1971. Over the years I was fortunate to gain an insight and experience into the many various areas and the changing roles of the service mainly within Hampshire. Selected for the forerunner of paramedic training in the 70s I was able to develop my skills in patient care over my career to a foundation degree in Paramedic Sciences via the Open University. Other areas have included winning two travelling scholarships to Scandinavia to look at how schools teach basic life support to children, setting up a local basic life support Heartstart scheme and Presidency of the Ambulance Service Institute (ASI). My outside interests include DIY, photography walking and travel. Declaration of Interests: Political Party: None Financial or other interest in the Trust: None

Nigel Burt I believe passionately that our NHS is the most important organisation in the UK, staffed by a dedicated and highly qualified workforce, and vital to the fabric of our country. I also believe that it is the duty of a governor to ensure that the views of their constituents are brought to the attention of the executives running the Trust. I am a recently retired senior manager for a major oil company. My role as Community Relations Manager centred on engagement with the community to maintain and enhance the reputation of the company within the community. My role also involved representing community concerns to site managers and working to resolve these. I was also a member of the senior team responsible for managing incidents which ranged from oil spills, to fires and industrial accidents. In this role I worked with the ambulance and other emergency services. I was also pleased to support our NHS with funding for the air ambulance, the purchase of a Co-Responder Emergency Response Vehicle and schools’ first aid training provided by the ambulance trust.

2 Now that I have time to devote to issues that I feel strongly about, I would like to bring the skills that I have honed throughout my working life to bear as a Governor with SCAS. I believe I would be an excellent ambassador for SCAS and an advocate for patients and the wider community in maintaining the high standards of care that the Trust delivers. Paul Edward Carnell I commenced my working life, at the age of 18, in Banking, spending just over three years with one of the “big four”. After a short period in car insurance I moved to Southerngas, for five years and during that time I travelled throughout the SCAS region. Joining Hampshire Ambulance Service in 1974, as an ambulanceman, I was promoted to Leading Ambulanceman, which position I held until shortly before retirement. I qualified as a paramedic attending the full range of emergency and urgent calls, also dealing with non-urgent patients attending outpatient clinics, day hospitals, etc. I was a staff representative for 30 years and I also served on the JCNC - the staff/ management committee - for 15 years. My ambulance duties were mainly around the area but I have worked throughout Hampshire, widening my area knowledge and experience. I have served as Chairman of a school governing body from the green field site to its opening. For some years I have been elected to the local Town Council and I have also served a year as Chair of the Council. Although retired I have a young family progressing through sixth form college and secondary school. I am seeking re-election - for a third (final - the maximum permitted) term to the Council of Governors I consider that having been an operational paramedic and staff representative, I am well placed in what is happening at the grassroots, what the public expect and have a good working relationship with management at all levels Declaration of Interests: Political Party: Liberal Democrats Financial or other interest in the Trust: None

Debbie Cattell I have lived in Andover with my husband and daughter for 16 years. While my daughter was at school I worked for a large retailer in the security department and at times it was very challenging but always interesting. Although I do not know very much about the Ambulance service I have volunteered for my Housing Association for over 10 years. I first started with completing surveys and attending focus groups. I found that the more I was involved the more I wanted to do. I became hooked. I started doing more and more. I took all the training available and started visiting other housing associations to see how they were providing services to their tenants. I learnt as much as i could and took that back. It has help us improve the services we offer to our tenants. I enjoy giving the tenants a voice, and making sure that the tenant is heard. I became a board member which I still really enjoy. I would love the opportunity to become a governor for the Ambulance Service and feel some off the experiences I have already gained will help. 3 Bill Devenish Married with three adult children I have lived in Hampshire and Oxfordshire most of my life and 8would like to give something back to the community. My banking career has given me extensive experience of business and financial management. I have run multi-million pound bank subsidiaries. I have worked at board level and directly with the public, been responsible for strategic implementation and team development, delivered complex change management and been responsible for mentoring and staff development. Recently I have run my own risk management business advising banks on their complicated lending issues. Delivery of excellence and constant improvement in demanding business environments is the cornerstone of my working ethic. I believe passionately provision of a free at source Ambulance service is a fundamental right to all but recognise the huge challenge to those responsible for delivery in a very demanding and stressful environment; both on the front line and behind the scenes. As a doctor my daughter has given me insight into the financial and operational challenges facing the Ambulance service and I have huge admiration for the dedication and skill shown by all the staff. I am confident I have the experience and ability to act as a governor. I believe listening to the views of the staff and public is a crucial part of delivering excellence. I will strive to provide assistance and support to help the service continue to meet its vision of saving lives and enabling people to get the care they need. Charles McGill I am a serving Watch Manager of 51 years standing with Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service. Over those years I have build up brilliant working relationships with other agencies such as South Central Ambulance Service, police, local authorities, Her Majesty’s Coastguard, RNLI and the Environment Agency. I have also worked directly with and sat on Local Resilience Forum representing Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service. I feel that I am at a stage in my life where I would like a new challenge and become involved with something rewarding to enhance the local community and the society we currently live in. I also feel that my 50 years operational service and working in the local community has set me in good stance to offer my real life experiences and give something back to the community which I am very passionate about. This opportunity to support, encourage and engage with all involved in the work South Central Ambulance Service now and in the future is something I am very passionate about. Edward Frank Morris Healthcare plays a major part in my life after witnessing my father die from three variations of cancer. My mother, who was previously a nurse, sadly fell into a vicious pit of depression shortly after. Currently, I’m a third student at Southampton . I have had the honour of being the Champion of Journalism and Languages for two years running. I have also had the privellege of being Course Representative of Journalism for two years after being nominated by my coursemates. However, despite me being a student, I do not only see the world from the perspective of a young person. I currently work at Unity 101 Community Radio Station as Executive Social Media Manager. My work with them has given me an insight into the BAME Community which holds a very close place to my heart, being half Filipino myself. I have first hand heard the issues and wantings of the BAME Community and I have done what I can to help them. Please see over

4 I also work for Voice FM and have done for 4 years, where I have interacted with the students of Southampton. Finally I’ve had the privellege of learning about Southampton from my mentors Councilor Cathie McEwing, who is the previous Mayor of Southampton, and Ram Kalyan “Kelly” who is the station manager of Unity 101. My interests lay in the well being of medical professionals and new medical professionals, as well as tackling mental health and the current obesity crisis. Tony Nicholson It was several years as a Trustee in Hampshire’s Air Ambulance that first introduced me to the critical role and dedicated people of SCAS. I already had the belief in ‘public services’, from beginnings as a RAF helicopter pilot and up to a Defence Agency board position: learning about team-working and leadership across policy, operations, training, support and project management. Later, I’ve specialised in service and delivery roles from the private sector, both as executive and adviser; and that’s also fed my interest and understanding across the wider emergency services field, including fire, police and Search and Rescue. The last of my shaping experiences has been on the panel of Cabinet Office Reviewers. Working in small teams and supporting each other, these test selected Government Major Projects against best practice in respect of what works – and what doesn’t. It involves being independent but supportive, asking the searching questions, and offering constructive feedback to help improve outcomes. To me, that seems to fit pretty well with what’s expected of a Governor. I’m driven by the desire to help make things work, by drawing on all those accumulated experiences. Before applying, I’ve watched recent meetings of both the Council of Governors and the SCAS Board itself. The challenges facing SCAS are varied, and the teams are clearly committed; the service that SCAS provides is one that matters to all of us. With your help, it would be a privilege to support it. Peter Geoffrey Power I have wide Public and Private Sector experience spanning over 40 years where focussing on excellence has been a constant driver, along with teamwork, innovation, professionalism and caring. In the Public Sector (Police London) I was at the centre of creating the innovative emergency command system now used by all UK Emergency Services and oversaw several post incident reviews (e.g. Kings X Fire 1987). In addition, I have been on organising teams behind many multi agency exercises. In the Private Sector I have co-authored several BS standards (BS 11200 / 25999) and led many emergency mgt. workshops in different counties, focusing on teamwork, professionalism and caring. I am a past Chairman of the World Conference on Disaster Management and have supported governments in the UK, Canada and Australia. I am also a JP (Southampton) and Fellow of Institutes of Risk Mgt, Chartered Mgt. and Business Continuity. I have a proven record in both leading teams and being a team player in operational and supportive roles where empowerment, setting standards, awareness of diversity and delivering objectives have been critical. I am also Chairman of our Village Hall Trust (1065438) and help to organise many events in our neighbourhood. If favourably considered for this position I would welcome an opportunity to hopefully represent the views of others and consolidate my experience thus far for the benefit of the Trust. Declaration of Interests: Political Party: None Financial or other interest in the Trust: None Please see over 5 Ray Rowsell I hope to be elected for a second term as a governor for the Trust so that I can build on the initiatives started in my current term during which I proposed improvements to the conduct of Council of Governors Meetings that made it much easier for all governors to make a full contribution. My suggestions were tested and thereafter adopted. In addition, a similar format was adopted for Board Meetings. During the past two and a half years I have fulfilled the requirements of a governor including attending many public engagement events across Hampshire and once into Thames Valley. These events, where I enjoyed discussing SCAS activities with members of the public and staff, were very diverse including an international food fair in Southampton, a multicultural church walk in Reading and an emergency services day. At the Council of Governors Meetings feedback from my engagement work and experience from my career in logistics management enabled me to ask Non Executive Directors probing questions to ensure that SCAS is managed to high standards of safety and care, both clinically and operationally, to ensure the best service to the public At the same time I have taken considerable interest in the management of staff. This is very important as they have to deliver the service and the evidence indicates they do it well. Currently, SCAS is classed as “good”. I hope to continue both as an ambassador and a critical friend of SCAS in the endeavour to achieve an “outstanding” rating Declaration of Interests: Political Party: None Financial or other interest in the Trust: None

Michael Bruce Schmidt I believe I have the necessary skills and experience that are required to fulfill the role of public Governor. The knowledge gained in my working life, much of which was dealing with emergency situations, will enable me to easily understand the pressures on SCAS. I served in the Royal Navy for many years as an officer and during that time on a number of ships, both home and overseas, and in later years in management roles. On retirement I joined HM Coastguard and served in the operations room at Lee on Solent handling emergency calls from both the public and vessels in distress. The last 12 years of my working life were spent working for the port authority in Southampton in the marine department. I have lived in the south of Hampshire for over 40 years and have served on the local committee of the Institute of Transport Administration. I ‘work’ as a volunteer for the Southampton Heritage bus group and still hold a valid HGV and PSV licence which allows me to drive such vehicles for events. I was involved in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme as the local field officer which included training adults to take young people on expedition training and assessing their skills. I enjoy meeting and working with all manner of people whether volunteers or paid staff. I feel I can make a very positive contribution as a Governor.
