Revista Brasileira de Gestão e Desenvolvimento Regional G&DR. V. 16, N. 3, P. 59-71, set-dez/2020. Taubaté, SP, Brasil. ISSN: 1809-239X Received: 11/14/2019 Accepted: 04/26/2020 SOCIOECONOMIC CHARACTERIZATION OF BOCAS DEL TORO IN PANAMA: AN APPLICATION OF MULTIVARIATE TECHNIQUES CARACTERIZACIÓN SOCIOECONÓMICA DE BOCAS DEL TORO EN PANAMÁ: UNA APLICACIÓN DE TÉCNICAS MULTIVARIADAS Barlin Orlando Olivares1 Jacob Pitti2 Edilberto Montenegro3 Abstract The objective of this work was to identify the main socioeconomic characteristics of the villages with an agricultural vocation in the Bocas del Toro district, Panama, through multivariate techniques. The two principal components that accounted for 84.0% of the total variation were selected using the Principal Components Analysis. This allowed a classification in three strata, discriminating the populated centers of greater agricultural activity in the district. The study identified that the factors with the greatest impact on the characteristics of the population studied were: the development of agriculture in indigenous territories, the proportion of economically inactive people and economic occupation other than agriculture; This characterization serves as the first approach to the study of sustainable land management in indigenous territories. Keywords: Applied Economy, Biodiversity, Crops, Multivariate Statistics, Sustainability.

August 2009 SUMMARY Every time he walks into the forest, my grandfather says “a dialogue about forests is a dialogue with our brothers the trees. We must ask the trees and Mother Earth permission to take the day’s livelihood from them.” To speak about indigenous peoples and their lands is to speak about history, and to do so from a cultural perspective.

  • 3. Policies and Projects for National and Regional Economic Development
Final Report The Study on the Comprehensive Ports Development Plan in The Republic of Panama August 2004 3. POLICIES AND PROJECTS FOR NATIONAL AND REGIONAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT 3.1 Economic Development Policies 3.1.1 Economic, Social and Financing Plan with Human Capital Investment The Plan de Desarrollo Economico, Social y Financiero con Inversión en Capital Humano (2001) (Economic, Social and Financing Plan with Human Capital Investment - the Plan) updates the first version made public in March 2000. The objectives of the Plan are to address a variety of social and economic problems among which poverty and unemployment and therewith related low purchasing power. The Panamanian economy is confronted with export deficiency and reduced international competitiveness due to significant changes in the global markets, creating little growth and stagnation. The guiding principles for the development and implementation of the National Government’s Economic Plan are summarized in its Vision 2020: Development, Equity, Sustainability, Auto-determination and Democracy69. Since the beginning of the nineties, different analysis and development programs identified the major social and economic problems of the country. These programs include the “Program of Develop and Economy Modernization” (October, 1991), the “Document on Public Policies for the Comprehensive Development” (September, 1994) and the “Program for Social Development with Economical Efficiency” (1997). These programs diagnosed that the economic and social problems are the result of “a combination of incentives and regulations to structure economic activities to install a competitive economic market environment”70. The strategy applied at that time was to establish a centralized policy according to the defined principles of a market economy without state intervention.
