* * * Tu B’Shevat - The New Year for Trees Shevat 15 ~ January 26—Monday

The central and focal point of this month is the New Year for Trees, which brings to mind the well known Biblical analogy, “Man is like a tree”; an analogy that embraces many aspects, general and particular. Since this analogy is given by the Torah, Toras Emes, it is cer- tain to be precise in all its aspects, each of which is in- structive in a general or particular way, for every one of us, man and woman.

For such is the purpose of every detail of the Torah, (meaning, instruction) to induce everyone to reflect on it and derive practical instruction from it in everyday life.

Accordingly, I will refer to some general points of the said analogy.

To begin with, the essence of a living tree is, above all, that it grows; its growth being the sign of its living.

In later years, when the Rebbe frequently came home after a night of Yechidus at 3 or 4 a.m., she was always patiently and uncomplainingly awake, waiting for him. Despite the fact that she was the one who prevailed upon the Rebbe to accept the Nesius and she was the one who sacrificed the most from her personal life for this gift to Klal Yisroel in general and Chassidim in particular, nevertheless, until her last day, she remained determinedly and absolutely in the background, totally shunning any and all publicity.

In her last years, the Rebbetzin suffered considerably in her eyes. Once Rabbi Zalman Gurary asked her, “Jews from all over the world ask the Rebbe for a Brochah. Why do you hold yourself back from asking for one?” Her simple answer was: “It is important for me not to cause him pain.”

Once, on the occasion of her birthday, the Lubavitch Women’s Organization sent her a bouquet of flowers. The women had sent, together with the bouquet, a list of names for whom blessings were re- quested. The secretary received the bouquet and passed on the letter to the Rebbe, who observed that the letter was addressed to his wife and asked his secretary to give it to her. Taken aback, the secretary explained that it had appended to it a list of names of people requesting Brochos. To this the Rebbe re- plied: “She can also give blessings.

The Rebbetzin passed away on Wednesday, Parshat Mishpatim, 22nd of Shevat 5748 (1988). She was interred next to her grandmother, Rebbetzin Shterna Sarah, and her mother, Rebbetzin Nechama Dina, and opposite the Ohel.

The 8th of shvat is the 18th yarhtzeit of Rabbi Menachem Shmuel Dovid Halevi Raichik. We are presenting a few stories written by Rabbi Avrohom Klyne, the son- in-law of Rabbi Raichik. ******* After we were married, the Shver stayed with us many times when he was in Crown Heights. After the Rebbe's Farbrengen one night, we returned home in the early hours of the morning. In the middle of the night I was awakened by a loud cry of anguish coming from the room where Rabbi Raichik was sleeping. Fearfully, I ran to the room in my semi - awake state and found him sitting at the table, oblivious to my entrance, repeating again and again.... Ani Nivreisi....Ani lo Nivreisi ( I am created to serve my Creator, I have not been created except to serve my Creator). I was struck by the spectacle and as I crept back to bed, I was moved to get up earlier than usual to learn Chassidus in . True to my resolve I was up early and moved about the apartment qui- etly so as not to disturb him. I checked on him before I left....and he had already gone to shul. ******* I received a call from a long time neighbor of the Shver & Shvigger saying that she suspected something was wrong in the house. I rushed over and let myself in. Rabbi Raichik was alone, had fallen, and was lying with his leg bent at an impossible angle. After calling for help I sat down next to him on the floor, spoke to him and gently held his hand which was shaking badly. He was staring at a point above my shoulder and seemed to be struggling to change his position or to raise his head somewhat. Eventually he said....zeit mochel....forgive me, but you're blocking my view of the picture of the Rebbe on the wall. ****** 3) There were many times that we would either stay at the Shver and Shvigger's house for Shab- bos or they would stay by us. It was a slow walk from shul for the Shver who was suffering from Parkinsons. One Shabbos we were almost the last to leave Shul, but still Rabbi Raichik insisted on first having a private conversation with someone. Finally we left Shul with him holding tightly to my arm, and after just several minutes was having a hard time walking and seemed in consid- erable pain. He stopped and said he needs to go back. I was wondering if there was a house near- by where he could use the restroom. But he insisted that he needed to go back. He had to stop and lean against a wall to rest and catch his breath several times, and I voiced my fears that the Shul might be locked. We arrived at the Shul and I banged on the door. Thankfully the person who had been speaking to him answered the door. R. Raichik stood at the open doorway, yelled at him to go home and make kiddush for his wife who, he said, is waiting for him. I pulled on his arm to lead him in to Shul and the conveniences, and he shook his head, silently shuffled in to a 180 de- gree turn, and we started to head for home again.
