Von der Art/ Spezies des Homo sapiens waren sie, hatten vielleicht hin und wieder Kontakte mit NeandertalerInnen, und ihnen werden Kleidung, Steinwerkzeug, Speere, ebenso Zelte oder einfache Hütten aus Buschwerk zugetraut. Sie waren wohl entlang von Küsten und Flüssen immer weiter nach Norden gelangt, bis sie am Schwarzen Meer und dann die Donau hinauf in Richtung Westen siedelten. Nicht Neugier trieb sie, sondern das Anwachsen ihrer verwandtschaftlich verbundenen kleinen Gruppen machte die Ausbreitung nötig; pro Jahr durchschnittlich zwei bis drei Kilometer, so überwanden sie fast 5.000 Kilometer. Als WildbeuterInnen mußten sie darauf bedacht sein, im Zusammenhang mit ihnen nahestehenden Gruppen bestimmte große Regionen fürs Sammeln und Jagen für sich zu beanspruchen. Auch Vertreibungen wird es immer wieder gegeben haben, und Vernichtung. Etwa zur gleichen Zeit wie die Pyrenäen erreichten moderne Menschen auch Höhlen in der Schwäbischen Alb, die bereits die Winter über bewohnt waren, und in denen sich kleine Schnitzereien fanden. Körperlich waren jene Leute uns schon sehr ähnlich; auch ihr Gehirn entsprach in biologischer Hinsicht dem unseren. Doch wie sie glaubten, dachten und sprachen, wie weit sie in ihrer Kompetenz entwickelt waren, darüber wissen wir wenig. Sie unterschieden sich offenbar kognitiv deutlich von früheren Menschenarten, Homo erectus wie Homo neanderthalensis, als sie Eurasien zu besiedeln begannen. Ihre Kommunikation war vermutlich noch wesentlich von Zeigen und Gesten bestimmt, bevor die Sprache voll ausgebildet wurde. Sehr wahrscheinlich machten sie während der 30.000 Jahre des Jung-Paläolithikums, das mit dem Ende der Eiszeit und mit dem Beginn des Landbaus ins Neolithikum überging, eine erneute deutliche kognitive Entwicklung durch. Das zeigen vor allem die wachsenden Siedlungen, die neue soziale Anforderungen stellten. Und wir werden sehen, wie sehr das Geschlechterverhältnis das erste Movens der Geschichte ist. Um den Prozeß der Kognition wird es in dieser Studie vor allem gehen, darum, wie sich Denken, Glauben und die Logik des Weltbildes seit der Entstehung des modernen Menschens (Homo sapiens) verändert haben. Depicted works of art describing hybrid creatures have emerged during the Upper Paleolithic period in parallel with emergence of hunter cultures. Ancient forms of Shamanism, a popular belief system among hunter cultures, had an effect on emergence of these hybrid figures. Imitation of the strong and the intelligent within the animal kingdom and the humankind's thirst for merging developing its physical and intellectual capacity with this power are among the main dynamics behind emergence of hybrid figures. The humankind of the Upper Paleolithic period, which has seen the world with a sense of permeability among species and an animalistic sensitivity and vigor, had a cognitive world within which things and humans must have been at the same level and forming a unity. During breakage of this unity and a sense of "togetherness," the hunter tries to balance the fear and suspense caused by prohibition of violence against those that exist at the same level and spiritual unity with mythical thinking. Prohibition of violence gave way to a cognitive status that identifies with the prey. This new symbolic consciousness which has emerged during the Upper Paleolithic period has tried to find a balance between controlling the suspense and fear caused by violence directed against the strong and the wild and the strength of the victim.

The conclusion that has been popularized by this research is that the artists accurately depicted the animals as they saw them in their environment. It has long been evident that some artists of the European Ice Age caves were able to realize graphic memesis to a remarkable degree. This new study of the genome of ancient horses appears to confirm the artist’s intention of creating the actual appearance of dappled horses. I will question this conclusion as well as the relevance of this study to the art by examining the Spotted horses in the context of the entire panel and the panel in the context of the whole cave. To further enlarge our view, I will consider the use of similar dots and dappling in the rock art of other paleolithic people. The visual effect of dots will be seen in terms of their psychological impact. Discoveries by neuroscientists regarding the effect of such stimuli on human cognition will be mentioned.

The veracity of the carbon isotope dating att empts relating to the rock art in Chauvet Cave is reviewed, together with the merits of their criticisms. The att ribution of the cave art to the Aurignacian is validated by several factors and stylistic objections are refuted. The question of the ethnicity of the Aurignacian artists is also considered, leading to the cognisance that they are very unlikely to have been ‘anatomically modern’ humans. There is currently no sound evidence that the ‘Aurignacians’ were not robust Homo sapiens people, i.e. Neanderthals or their descendants. The gracilisation humans experienced in the Final Pleistocene and Holocene is att ributed not to evolutionary processes, but to cultural intervention through breeding preferences leading to the neotenous features characterising present-day humans.     UIUC Physics 193/406 Acoustical Physics of Music/Physics of Musical Instruments Pre-Historic Music and Art in Palæolithic Caves Pech Merle is a cave (grotto) near the small village of Caberets, which is located on the western edge of the Massif Central in the southern, Midi-Pyrénées Region of France, in the Departement (County) of Lot. (Quercy is the pre-Napoleonic name of this Departement, which is still in popular use today.) The location of Caberets relative to other places in France is shown in Figure 1 below. Figure 1: Map of the Departement (County) of Lot, in Southern France showing the location of the Grotte du Pech Merle, near the small village Cabarets The cave is at an elevation of 280m on the eastern side of a hill called Pech Merle just outside the village of Cabrerets.
