Robert Cloys 4th Space Communications Squadron The April 17 deadline to file tax returns is upon us, but there’s no reason to panic. The military offers a wide variety of sources that will allow members to meet this deadline. has teamed up again this year with the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, which offers tax assistance to active duty, retired military and DEERS-enrolled dependents. For many, tax season can be stressful. If a payment is more likely than a refund, there are options that can alleviate some of the stress of owing or not being able to pay. According to Military One Source more than 75 percent of taxpayers are eligible for an installment agreement and can apply using the web-based Online Payment Agreement application available at http://www.irs.gov. The best thing to do in any scenario is pay as much as you can before the deadline. If 90 percent of total tax due is not paid by the deadline, an Estimated Tax Penalty may get added in addition to a Failure to Pay penalty along with interest. “If you can’t complete and file your return by the April 17 deadline, you can request an extension of time to file, which automatically gives you an additional six months to file your return,” said Jan Pardalis, 50th Space Wing tax program coordinator. “An extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay; your balance is still due April 17, but you will avoid a failure-to-file penalty. In order to get an extension, you need to file Form 4868 with the IRS.” The Schriever Tax Center can also assist members in com- U.S. Air Force Photo/Staff Sgt. Patrice Clarke 50th Space Wing Public Affairs For many people a good night’s sleep is more elusive than the Loch Ness monster, a flying unicorn or the treasure at the end of the rainbow. Members of Team Schriever who work rotating shifts often have the hardest time getting those much needed eight hours of shuteye. The Schriever Health and Wellness Center along with the 21st Medical Group have a class available for shift workers looking to catch those Zs. The Monday class will focus on what sleep actually is and how shift work and outside activi- ties affect the duration and quality of sleep. “The Air Force has long recognized that fatigue will impact our mission and our mission comes first,” said Maj. Edward Bridges, 21st Medical Group flight physician. “This is dem- onstrated by the acceptance of counter-fatigue measures in the flying community that date back for decades.” As a physician, Bridges has seen many patients through- out Space Command who have come in with sleeping troubles and almost all of those patients have been shift workers. “Rotating shifts can really hinder a proper sleeping sched- ule and throw off a person’s circadian rhythm, or natural level of sleepiness and alertness,” said Capt. Daniel Catrambone, 21st Medical Group aerospace physiologist. Getting the correct amount of sleep is important and is directly related to many health issues. “The amount of sleep people get can be directly related to weight gain or loss and metabolic syndrome which is a combination of ailments,” said Bridges. Roob recommends Palmer Park, due to its central location and variety of difficulty. “Schriever itself is a good place to get your feet wet,” Roob said. “We’ve got a trail here that we use for an annual moun- tain bike competition that is more of dirt road on the north side of the base. It doesn’t hold much technical difficulty, but it’s a place people can start and get a feel for their bike.” Schriever outdoor recreation has mountain bikes available for rent in youth, adult and extra large sizes at reasonable day, weekend and week-long rates. Fitness center staff can direct people on how to access the trail north of the fitness center. Both Hamby and Roob say mountain biking is a lifelong sport, one that offers fun and excitement while challenging its participants athletically and aerobically. “I like the fact that I’m not in a gym,” Hamby said. “The speed and the exercise are good stress relievers. Anytime I’ve got something stressful going on in my life I can ride and all I’m thinking about is picking the right line, the next climb or the best way to attack a particular section of a trail. I don’t think about anything else.” Of course, anyone who has ridden a bike is aware of its inherent dangers. Roob argues that like any sport, if someone wants to improve it’s imperative to push one’s limits. “We call it paying your dues,” Roob said as he rubbed a fresh arm bruise. “What’s nice about the sport is you start to figure out what you can and can’t get away with.
