Paul Lynde, No Hollywood SquareBy Donald ThackerSince I was a child I loved the work of Paul Lynde. Through the years the only information I ever had was just innuendo and rumor. Finally this wonderfully honest and sweet book tells all the truths and all the stories of this great comic. Prefaced with the story of Cathy Rudolph, a teenage fan who contacted Lynde and became a very good friend, her writing pulls no punches on his personal life. From being one of tv's most famous comics to a lonely and caustic alcoholic, Rudolf paints a loving portrait of the man she came to know. Even if you have no idea of who Lynde was, the story is a fascinating sketch of a gay man living and dealing with the insecurities of show business in the 50's, 60's, and 70's.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The ebook version sections were out of order...By MarkThe ebook version sections were out of order...which might have offended Paul Lynde's sense of neatness but he sure might have appreciated the comic effect. And frankly, had the introduction been first instead of last, it might have been a difficult book to start. For me it was better to read about Paul's life, however disjointed because of the mixing of chapters, and then finish with the interjection of the author's life; I already had a vague knowledge of their relationship and just knowing the book was by a dear friend was enough. This was exactly what I was hoping for, a kind and accurate (about the person, not so much on dates etc) book about a kind man who was also a fabulous entertainer.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very touching.By Jeffery H. FarleyWell written and a loving tribute to a very funny actor. I will always think of "Bewitched" 's Uncle Arthur when I hear his name. This book will let you into the heart and soul of Paul Lynde. Best remembered for outrageous jokes on Hollywood Squares, as Uncle Arthur from Bewitched, and as the frantic father in Bye Bye Birdie, Paul was never satisfied with his career - or his personal life. But even as he suffered through some of the cruelest of times, Paul continued to make us forget our troubles and was forever gracious to his fans. This is the book those fans have been waiting for. Though he was one of the most original, hilarious, and private actor-comedians of all time, author Cathy Rudolph, his trusted friend, reveals her adventures with Paul - along with his turbulent life story. Here for the first time are interviews with his relatives and personal notes. Also included are memories from his friends and peers including Cloris Leachman, Chita Rivera, Florence Henderson, Kaye Ballard, Peter Marshall, Les Roberts, Betty White, and many more.
