ABOUT SINGAPORE MEDIA ACADEMY Singapore Media Academy (SMA) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mediacorp, offering training, education, and consultancy services to address the needs of the local and regional media industries. Incorporated since November 2005, SMA consolidates over 50 years of broadcast and media expertise to provide a wide range of accredited, conservatory-style and market-relevant programmes that are taught by top practising professionals using comprehensive facilities in Mediacorp’s broadcast centre. In 2008, SMA was appointed by SkillsFuture Singapore (previously known as Workforce Development Agency) as the sole Continuing Education and Training Centre for the Singapore Media Industry and plays a central role in training and up-skilling media practitioners. The Committee also advises on Chinese programmes on Pay TV. 2 This report by ACCESS covers the period of 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2012. The current Committee was appointed by the Minister for Information, Communication and the Arts (MICA) for a two-year term with effect from 1 July 2010. The list of Committee members can be found in Annex A . b) The Committee’s Work 3 The Committee undertook the following: a) Reviewed and gave feedback on Chinese programming on MediaCorp’s Channel 8 and Channel U, Pay TV channels, and radio stations; b) Reviewed and provided recommendations on the range and quality of Chinese programmes; c) Reviewed and provided feedback on censorship issues, including those arising from public complaints; and d) Provided support and advice to the Media Development Authority (MDA) in the formulation of content guidelines and public education. -

News Release For Immediate Release Towards a more educated, empowered and discerning media consumer Media Fiesta, a month-long media campaign for all Singaporeans Singapore, 3 March 2011 – Singaporeans from all segments of society, young and old, can now learn how they can become more savvy and discerning in the way they consume media. Media Fiesta 2011, the third edition of a month-long festival offering interactive media activities, experiential games and a showcase of local talent and media offerings, kicked off today at *SCAPE. Themed “Celebrate and Discover Media”, Media Fiesta 2011 will bring Singaporeans on an exploratory journey into the highly-dynamic world of media. Mr Lui Tuck Yew, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA), was the Guest-of-Honour at the launch. Media Fiesta 2011 is hosted by the Media Development Authority (MDA) and organised by Pico Art International. Through Media Fiesta, MDA seeks to nurture a culture of creativity and foster a connected and cohesive society through: 1. Exposing Singaporeans to the whole spectrum of traditional and interactive digital media, and raising their awareness of emerging media technologies 2. Promoting the discerning and responsible use of media, and 3. Providing opportunities for Singaporeans to appreciate made-by Singapore media content, services and applications, and embrace media for work, learning and play Four Anchor Events Showcase Local Talents Targeting over 120,000 Singaporeans including students, parents and young working adults, Media Fiesta 2011 will showcase various media platforms - covering music, publishing, games and film - through four anchor events which will be held, over four weekends in March. -

Media Release Longest running book fair pushes the envelope with book illustrations, and film and music zone Singapore, 31 May 2017 – Singapore Book Fair, an annual event where publishers and book retailers gather, returns this year from 30 May – 5 June at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre, Halls 401 and 402. With the theme “In Books. We Live”, this year's Singapore Book Fair, organised by Singapore Press Holdings' Chinese Media Group, will continue to promote the joy of reading and make reading a part of our lives. The event, in its 32nd edition, will feature 50 exhibitors from Singapore and the region. Visitors can look forward to a host of activities during the seven-day event, ranging from seminars, book launches to storytelling sessions that aim to cultivate visitors’ interest in reading and learning. Book illustrations, films and music, which complement the world of literature, will also be showcased at the fair. Mr Ong Ye Kung, Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) & Second Minister for Defence will be the Guest of Honour at the Opening Ceremony on 31 May. As the book fair’s key sponsor, Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple will be supporting the event with $60,000 worth of book vouchers to over 1000 children from low-income families. Each child will be given S$50 worth of book vouchers to purchase books and education materials. These children are beneficiaries from self- help groups including the Chinese Development Assistance Council, Yayasan Mendaki, Sinda and the Singapore Eurasian Association. Challenges of Digitizing Vernacular Newspapers & Preliminary Study of User Behaviour on NewspaperSG’s Multilingual UI Mazelan bin Anuar, Cally Law and Soh Wai Yee Abstract Singapore is a multicultural nation. About 76 per cent of Singapore’s population is ethnically Chinese, 14 per cent Malay, nine per cent Indian and the rest comprising other ethnic groups. Borne out of a pragmatic need to operate in the global economy using the English language, Singapore adopted the bilingual education policy in 1966. As a result, the majority of the Singaporean citizens are bilingual today, able to communicate effectively in English and their mother tongues. Four official languages are used in Singapore, namely English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. NewspaperSG is an online resource of Singapore newspapers published from 1831 to 2009. It was started in March 2009 with one major newspaper title in English, namely the Straits Times. Its coverage has now expanded to 29 titles, including Chinese, Malay and Tamil newspapers. With the introduction of these newspapers since August 2011, the multilingual interface was introduced in NewspaperSG to allow users to navigate the portal in English, Chinese or Malay. The paper will highlight the process and challenges that the team faced during the digitization of the multilingual newspapers, especially newspapers in the Chinese language. It will also present the preliminary findings on the study of user behaviour in NewspaperSG’s multilingual environment. Introduction Singapore was opened as a British trading post in 1819. Its first newspaper, Singapore Chronicle and Commercial Register, started in 1824. Since then more than 120 newspapers had been published in Singapore but many of them were short-lived and had ceased publication. -

For immediate release Media release Mediacorp and Ngee Ann Polytechnic seal partnership to nurture new talent pipeline of media professionals for the future Singapore, 2 July 2021 – Mediacorp and Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) have inked a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the co-development of media programmes to support the academic and creative growth of full-time NP students as well as part-time adult learners across various courses. Effective immediately, this strategic partnership will leverage the expertise of both organisations to offer in-depth industry-relevant training to prepare NP students for careers in an evolving media industry. It is also aligned with Mediacorp’s commitment as the national media network to collaborate closely with institutes of higher learning to develop the media industry, nurture the next generation of talent and position itself as the employer of choice in the media space. Co-created initiatives under this partnership will capitalise on the strong synergy between NP’s curriculum and Mediacorp’s key priorities, such as creating a future talent pipeline of Chinese-language media professionals via NP’s Diploma in Chinese Media & Communication (CMC) from the School of Humanities & Social Sciences (HMS); and working closely with NP’s School of Film & Media Studies (FMS) to build upon its track record of producing top radio personalities, journalists, filmmakers, and creative talents in the film and media industry. To that end, HMS and FMS students can anticipate activities that have been specially structured to strengthen their skills as future media practitioners: (a) Job attachments and hands-on learning. These include formalised mentorships with Mediacorp and internships with Mediacorp’s radio stations. -

Ong Lay Hong Was Born in Singapore and Has Spent More Than 30 Years Working in Television Industry
Ong Lay Hong was born in Singapore and has spent more than 30 years working in Television Industry. She received her Bachelors of Arts in Telecommunications (Radio and TV Production) with a Certificate in Film Studies from Indiana University, USA. She started off as a camera woman in an America TV Station then joined Hong Kong Rediffusion Television as a News producer. She joined Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (now MediaCorp) in 1982 and rose from the rank and file to become Chief Editor of Chinese News and Current Affairs on 2000 onwards. Since June 2007, she has been designated to lead the China team in developing the China market for Channel NewsAsia. In 2009, Lay Hong became the Managing Director for the channels of Suria and Vasantham and their supporting units. Her work as the Producer for documentary films ‘Ode to a Humming Bird’ and ‘A Day is Too Long’ received 1989 Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union Television Prize and 1981 Prix Futura in Berlin respectively; recognition and accreditation from members of the International Film Industry. Besides working in the media, she was awarded scholarship to study media in United Kingdom in 1991 and at the University of California, Berkeley in 2004. As a Visiting Scholar in UC Berkeley, Lay Hong devoted her academic studies in the field of New Media. Upon her study, she revamped the Chinese News website and launched xin.sg, now xinMSN. Lay Hong has launched many television programmes for MediaCorp in which most of them still air regularly. These programmes include 'Crime Watch', 'Tuesday Report', 'President Stars Charity' , 'Good morning Singapore' etc.
