MEDIA RELEASE PROMOTE MANDARIN COUNCIL (PMC) APPOINTS NEW CHAIRMAN 30th June 2011 – Mr Seow Choke Meng, Executive Vice President of Cultural Industry Promotion at Singapore Press Holdings, has been appointed as the Chairman of the Promote Mandarin Council (PMC) for the term starting 1 May 2011 to 30 April 2013. Mr Seow believes that Mandarin can be learnt and mastered if one starts from young and use it actively. Under his leadership, the Speak Mandarin Campaign, a nationwide campaign driven by the PMC, will continue to engage various sectors of the community to encourage Chinese Singaporeans to make Mandarin a part of their lives. More initiatives for the Campaign this year will be announced after the Speak Mandarin Campaign launch on 4 July 2011. The Speak Mandarin Campaign thanks former Chairperson Ms Lim Sau Hoong for her contributions during her stay with the Council, and welcomes Mr Seow on board. Ms Lim, during her term created 《华文?谁怕谁!》- The Chinese Challenge which contributed to a rise in interest in Chinese language and culture. The PMC also welcomes five new members to its Council: Mr Choo Thiam Siew President, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Mr Ho Meng Kit Chief Executive Officer, Singapore Business Federation. Permission required for reproduction Creative thinking and exploration: Art university breeds talent in the era of innovation As digital technology becomes of greater importance in the post-COVID era, more attention must be given to arts and humanities education. Thought leaders, creative professionals and scholars have pointed out that an education in the arts trains students to develop innovation and creativity, which are more and more sought after in the new economy. In early March 2021 during the Ministry of Education’s Committee of Supply Debate, Minister of Education Mr Lawrence Wong announced that Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and LASALLE College of the Arts will form an alliance to establish Singapore’s first university of the arts. This university will leverage on the strengths of the two institutions, enabling each to award its own university degrees. A 17-member pro-tem committee, headed by Professor Chan Heng Chee, Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will work with both institutions to develop the structure and operating model of the new university, which is expected to be up and ready in early 2023. According to the Presidents of both institutions, innovation and adaptability are skills which Singapore needs in the new digital era and these are best cultivated through an education in the arts. “Art, science and technology have long moved past the need for silos. -

Reading Newspapers with the Elderly 陪你看报纸 A community initiative by Lianhe Wanbao & Lianhe Zaobao Singapore Engage • Enrich • Empower Since August 2014, Singapore’s Chinese dailies Lianhe Wanbao and Lianhe Zaobao have been promoting engagement with its matured readers with the Reading Newspapers with the Elderly initiative. For three times a week, our newsroom volunteers visit elderly Singaporeans and discuss the week’s hottest news with them. Through this simple but unique initiative, we hope to enrich the seniors’ lives and empower them to stay active, mentally and physically, and enjoy a fulfilling retirement. Why did we launch this initiative? Singapore’s population is ageing at an unprecedented rate. As the post-war Baby Boomers retire from workforce and enter their silver years, elderly population will grow rapidly in the next few decades. Many of our senior citizens are neither literate nor familiar with the English language, and the language barrier has made it difficult for the Chinese- speaking elderly to keep up with the fast-evolving society. Lianhe Zaobao and Lianhe Wanbao value the spiritual needs of our senior citizens and would like to do our part to help them lead a fulfilling retirement. As editors and journalists, we report on news of public interests every day. News is what we do best, so we believe that reading newspapers with the elderly is one way we can contribute to this cause. Why is this important? Many seniors in Singapore face the “empty nest syndrome”. Their children are often away and they only have the television and other seniors as company. -

MIT4 Panel: "Asian Warrior Womanhood in Storytelling." Poh Cheng Khoo Interrogating the Women Warrior: War, Patriotism and Family Loyalty in Lady Warriors of the Yang Family (2001). The medieval Chinese are known to be heavily patriarchal, but even such a culture produced many formidable women warriors…Daughters of prominent military families trained in the martial arts. Wives of generals were often chosen for their battle skills. The Yang family of the Song Dynasty (960-1279 CE) was one such military family. When the men were decimated on various military assignments, their wives, mothers, sisters and even maidservants took their places on the battlefield. (“Warriors: Asian women in Asian society”) “No group of women in Chinese history has commanded so much prestige and respect as the ladies of the Yang family. They are revered as great patriots who were willing to lay down their lives for the sake of their country” (Lu Yanguang, 100 Celebrated Chinese Women, 149). The genesis of this paper lies in a 40-part retelling of one of the more enduring woman warrior stories of historical China. When I saw this particular 2001 TV series which loosely translates into Lady Warriors of the Yang Family, I was working on my dissertation involving Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior and hence the iconic figure of Fa Mu Lan. Contrary to Mulan’s concealment of gender in battle, here was a family of woman warriors from some ten centuries ago, none of whom had to compromise their true biological identity by cross-dressing or, according to Judith Lorber’s definition, turning “transvestite” (Richardson et al [eds.] 42). -

Games We Play On Singapore Telly In the mid 1990s, Singapore opened its doors to the international broadcasting community. The past four years in particular have seen steady policy-driven liberalisation of its print, television and multimedia industries. This has jumpstarted the local TV production industry and stimulated terrestrial network competition. While the two terrestrial TV networks compete voraciously for a small, fragmented, multilingual and increasingly sophisticated domestic TV audience, the localisation of international TV game show formats like Millionaire and The Weakest Link appear as attractive solutions to consolidate and build the audience base. TV gameshow formats have become one of the ‘formatting’ strategies that this industry employs to develop ‘local knowledge’ and ‘position’ themselves in the battle for audience ratings and eyeballs. This article will present findings and offer new insight into the impact of TV formats on the local television production, programming and audiences in Singapore.
