The aim of any chairman is to straddle the fence of maintaining the culture of the Society, which has a history of 76 years since its inception, whilst also allowing and facilitating the changes which are inevitable with the passage of time. Sometimes, it is important to forge a new path; at other times, brakes are needed. Changes occur in the membership of the Society as a whole and in the membership of the Executive Committee, both of which continue to thrive and renew themselves creatively. Of particular note is the resignation through ill health of Vice President Ken Spurlock and his wife. They gave the Society the generous gift of £500. Our finances are in good health and further enhanced by the generous gifts of Sian and Rowland Davies, who gave £350 pounds to fund the hiring of a venue for the Society’s Tuesday evening free lectures, which are open to the public. The changes in the Executive are always a mixture of sadness at saying goodbye to some, and joy at welcoming new blood. You will find details of these changes in the formal report. I thank those who have served so willingly and given of their time and energy and I welcome those who are at the beginning of their work as trustees. The individuals who make up the Executive bring and use their different skills to enrich the committee. Some contribute by organising tours, lectures, advertising or publicity; others have particular responsibilities such as Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Events Secretary, Membership Secretary and Treasurer, forming the Officer group. The Executive meets four times a year and is the ratifying body, but it may take note of discussions which have taken place in the smaller Officers’ group. The work of the Executive is to give you, the membership, educational experiences in the visual arts through organising tours and lectures. This, in turn, funds the Society to fulfil its declared aim of purchasing art to enhance the experience of the public at large. I am pleased to report to you the success of our educational, financial, social and purchasing ventures. 3 Summer Group Exhibition 2 August to 13 September New work from all the Gallery’s artists View exhibition on www.atticgallery.co.uk Attic Gallery Pocketts Wharf, Maritime Quarter, Swansea SA1 3XL Campagna di Montalcino, Siena,Toscana by David Carpanini T: 01792 653387 E: [email protected] Open Tuesday - Saturday 029 2066 6455 44a Glamorgan Street . MARTYN JONES CELEBRATING WELSH CONTEMPORARY ART WWW.TRINITYHOUSEPAINTINGS.COM Front Cover Martyn Jones (b. 1955) South Ocean Boulevard (Diptych) Oil on canvas Size: 98 x 199 cm Signed, titled and dated 2015 verso. Provenance: Displayed in the former home of Sir Kyffin Williams, RA in Beaumaris, Anglesey, Wales. Ref: 5527 TRINITY HOUSE MODERN | 35 HIGH STREET | BROADWAY | WR12 7DP | T: +44 (0)1386 859 329 WWW.TRINITYHOUSEPAINTINGS.COM FOREWORD I am delighted to present the works of Martyn Jones in his first solo exhibition, ‘Celebration of Welsh Contemporary Art’ at Trinity House Modern. Martyn studied under British artists Adrian Heath and Patrick Heron and his work encapsulates influences from several members of the St Ives School. He is a natural colourist and the visual imagery in his compositions successfully illustrate his focus in creating symbolic and naturalistic works. His paintings which are descriptive of landscape are now highly sought after. “I have always considered my work as belonging to a European tradition in painting. Some of my deepest influences lie with the work of Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, Wassily Kandinsky, Braque’s ‘Atelier Series’ and my mentor and tutor Patrick Heron. Primarily my work is about promoting the use of light and colour. I am interested in my work conveying a sense of immediacy and simplicity, with each painting employing a personal alphabet of shapes and symbols, enabling me to develop my own visual language. The crossover between figuration and abstraction and the connection with the world at large, has also been an important focus in my work. I like to vary the physicality of the surface in employing various painting techniques, such as blending, stippling, gestural areas of colour and use of line, in an attempt to create a ‘jewel like’ appearance.

  • Projects, News and Events That Showcase the Great Work Going on in Museums Across Wales
Cylchlythyr ar gyfer Ffederasiwn Amgueddfeydd ac Oriel Celf Cymru The newsletter of the Federation of Museums & Art Galleries of Wales Hydref / October 2015 Hello from the Fed.. Welcome to another bumper edition of Ymag packed with projects, news and events that showcase the great work going on in Museums across Wales. It is a significant time for Welsh Museums. Whilst facing financial challenges, we also have a real opportunity to help transform the sector and build resilience for the long-term benefit of the people of Wales. The Fed urges all of our members to raise awareness of Welsh Museums by lobbying your local AM to respond to the Museums Review, which presents a model of delivery to improve the structure and influence of our sector. If you have heard of any feedback or media reports about the review in your area please share it with us and send a copy to Rachel Silverson. Rachel Silverson (President) Projects Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum continues search for WW1 photos The Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum, Caernarfon has undertaken the mammoth task of collecting photos of individual RWF soldiers killed in the Great War. Each man’s name is displayed on screen on the centenary of his death. Over 10,500 Royal Welch Fusiliers lost their lives during WW1. After 12 months of searching we have more than 2000 photographs, but would dearly love to add a photo to every name. We are appealing to other museums and centenary projects for help so please circulate our plea! We’ve already been greatly assisted by the Flintshire and West Wales Memorial projects, Holyhead Maritime Museum, Port Sunlight Museum and Conwy Archives to name “The Faces of Wales project is but a few.
