Yr Ysgrifennydd Tanysgrifio (Cyfeillion), Subscriptions Secretary (Friends) Amgueddfa Cymru National Museum Wales Parc Cathays, Cathays Park CAERDYDD, CF10 3NP CARDIFF, CF10 3NP CHAIR CHAT

It is a pleasure to review the activities of CASW for the year 2013 and to present the breadth and depth of the work of the Society, all of which is very gratifying.

The aim of any chairman is to straddle the fence of maintaining the culture of the Society, which has a history of 76 years since its inception, whilst also allowing and facilitating the changes which are inevitable with the passage of time. Sometimes, it is important to forge a new path; at other times, brakes are needed.

Changes occur in the membership of the Society as a whole and in the membership of the Executive Committee, both of which continue to thrive and renew themselves creatively. Of particular note is the resignation through ill health of Vice President Ken Spurlock and his wife. They gave the Society the generous gift of £500.

Our finances are in good health and further enhanced by the generous gifts of Sian and Rowland Davies, who gave £350 pounds to fund the hiring of a venue for the Society’s Tuesday evening free lectures, which are open to the public.

The changes in the Executive are always a mixture of sadness at saying goodbye to some, and joy at welcoming new blood. You will find details of these changes in the formal report. I thank those who have served so willingly and given of their time and energy and I welcome those who are at the beginning of their work as trustees.

The individuals who make up the Executive bring and use their different skills to enrich the committee. Some contribute by organising tours, lectures, advertising or publicity; others have particular responsibilities such as Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Events Secretary, Membership Secretary and Treasurer, forming the Officer group. The Executive meets four times a year and is the ratifying body, but it may take note of discussions which have taken place in the smaller Officers’ group.

The work of the Executive is to give you, the membership, educational experiences in the visual arts through organising tours and lectures. This, in turn, funds the Society to fulfil its declared aim of purchasing art to enhance the experience of the public at large. I am pleased to report to you the success of our educational, financial, social and purchasing ventures.

CONTEMPORARY ART SOCIETY FOR WALES Report of the Trustees for the year ending December 2013 Dr Chris Evans, Chairperson STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT Governing document CONSTITUTION The charity is controlled by its constitution and rules. These were adopted on 8th June 1967 and subsequently amended on 6th of June 1998, 5th June 1999, 23rd July 2005 and 22nd July 2006.

Induction of new trustees New trustees are invited to join the board by recommendation from existing board members and by nominations from the members of the Society in general. The board takes the responsible position of focussing on the skill set required to fulfil the tasks of the Society and how those are matched by prospective trustees offering their services.

Risk management The trustees have a duty to identify and review the risks to which the charity is exposed and to ensure appropriate controls are in place to provide reasonable assurance against fraud and error. The board has recently taken out an indemnity insurance and enhanced its general cover to take into consideration our extended activities and age of our membership. OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES Objectives and aims To foster and promote the maintenance, improvement and development of artistic taste and the knowledge and appreciation of the arts among the people of Wales and, for this purpose but not otherwise, the Society shall have the power to purchase contemporary works of art of accepted importance and to arrange for exhibitions of such works for the benefit of the public and to present them to Welsh public, charitable institutions. Significant activities The lecture programme in 2003 had 4 lectures, all on a Saturday. The Tuesday evening lectures started that year with 6 lectures on ‘The Romantic tradition in ’. Now, we present 6 Saturday lectures and 6 on a Tuesday evening, which we continue to offer free and open to the public. This illustrates the increase in activities of the Society and also demonstrates how it fulfils the aims of promoting the visual arts, as well as providing a platform for artists to present their work. There is a large body of individuals, both inside and outside the Executive, who contribute time and energy to promote the aims of the Society in its educational and purchasing remit. The membership responds with committed attendance and involvement in lectures and tours. In particular, the lectures and buffet lunch held at Lisvane are favourites, such that attendance has to be restricted. It is important to recognize the long hours of work done by helpers to enable this success story to be continued. This event alone not only promotes the visual arts and provides an educational forum of discussion, but also serves a very important social role in sharing a common interest. The educational tours organised on behalf of CASW continue to enrich members’ experience of the visual arts. * The rotation of trustees takes place at the AGM and in 2013 the Executive changed with the resignation of John Fitzgerald and retirement of Alan Spiller, Madge O’Keefe and Jean Walcot. We welcomed new members Sonia Davies, Philip Dixon and Arthur Parker. Dr Sandra Harding took the position of Vice Chair. New trustees are offered an induction to advise them on the responsibilities of a trustee, inform them of meetings and convey an idea of the culture of the Society. A postgraduate student was presented with a prize of £1000 at the AGM. Robert Harding has been appointed as buyer, with the specific task of purchasing works which will be gifted to ‘Paintings in Hospitals’. That Charity holds a library of works which are loaned to hospitals and other health establishments with the objective of enhancing life and contributing to the well-being of patients. This project was funded by CASW in conjunction with grants from Gibbs and Morel Trusts. In June 2013, the Society held its first selling exhibition of the artistic works of CASW members in Y Galeri in Caerphilly. Works from professional artists and serious amateurs were exhibited. The exhibition was opened by William Gibbs. 6 The new website is operating and presents an attractive and informative face of the Society to the public at large. We have been in discussion with Coleg Harlech to redistribute works previously gifted by CASW. Relationships were established with the Contemporary Art Society, London as well as local art organisations and museums. This is part of our outreach programme. FUTURE PLANNING 1. Budgetary Planning. We make provision for routine administrative costs, a student prize of £1000, the hiring of a venue for the Tuesday evening lectures, supporting and working with organisations such as Artes Mundi and the Venice Biennale, and a purchase fund. We have ring-fenced £8000 and received a gift from Sian Williams of £1000, so making a purchase fund of £9000. 2. A working party will be set up to explore how the £9000 might be spent. In the past we have appointed a buyer who has had freedom to make a personal choice. The working party will have the task of exploring alternatives, such as the Society offering an award to applicants from museums that have a particular project they want help to finance. 3. The discussions with Cyfarthfa Castle Gallery and Museum continue with a view to jointly producing an exhibition in July 2015. 4. Work on the E-Journal is progressing. The Editor is Dr Sandra Harding, with the help of Professor Tom Hayes as manager of the format of the journal. The Editor is collecting papers from lecturers with a view to publication. 5. We will be redistributing the works of art previously gifted to Coleg Harlech and returned to CASW. 6. At the Eisteddfod there will be a CASW purchase prize which will be received by a local museum. 7. We will make a financial contribution to Artes Mundi and we plan to work more closely together. 8. Following the presentation of purchases at the AGM in July there will an exhibition of the works at Oriel Canfas for two days in August. FINANCIAL REVIEW Reserves policy The charity regularly reviews its investments and reserves levels to ensure that they have sufficient funds to operate in the forthcoming year as set out in our planning. Public benefit The Trustees have reviewed the Charity Commission’s guidelines on public benefit and agreed that the charity demonstrates public benefit in a number of ways. They have been mentioned in detail in this report but can be summarized as: providing an educational programme of lectures on the visual arts (6 of which are free and open to the public), organising study tours of cities with major collections of art, supporting other arts organisations, offering a student prize and, most importantly, buying art. We therefore fulfil our objectives as set out in our constitution. Statement of Trustees’ Responsibilities The trustees are responsible for preparing the report of the Trustees and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom generally Accepted Accounting Practice). fountain fine art

It was all going to be so easy. I was buoyed up by the success of the Prints for the Proclamation show that I had helped organise for the National Eisteddfod in December 2013. When Jean Williams, CASW secretary, caught me at the January AUR exhibition of the work of the Eisteddfod Gold Medal winners of the last 10 years, I had suddenly agreed to write this piece, without a moment’s reflection. Jean was aware that I had been involved in establishing the CASW National Eisteddfod Purchase Prize, which ran from 2004 to 2010 and, as the Prize is to be reinstated, a review from me seemed appropriate. Indeed, my vain and vague recollection was that the original idea had been mine. I also had a theory about the Purchase prize being a sound way to identify future Gold Medal winners. Wrong on both counts.

Going back through CASW Executive Committee minutes I found that Dr Peter Wakelin had suggested a possible Eisteddfod purchase prize, at a meeting in December 2001. I am sure that I supported the idea, but it certainly wasn’t mine to claim. I clearly took up the proposal, on behalf of the Executive Committee, at some later date, because by March 2004 I was noted to have been in discussions with Robyn Tomos, Eisteddfod Visual Arts Officer, as to the operation of the prize. We must have moved on reasonably quickly, as by the Newport Eisteddfod that year CASW had agreed a Purchase Prize with a limit of £2000, with the purchase to be chosen by the curator of the local public museum/gallery, to go into that collection.

The first selector was Roger Cucksey, Keeper of Art at Newport Museum and Art Gallery. Roger took the opportunity to add to the Museum’s very fine ceramics collection by purchasing works by Walter Keeler and Melanie Brown.

Artist - Elfyn Lewis Title: Bachysant National Eisteddfod Purchase Prize Bala 2009 Selector: MOMA Location: MOMA Y Tabernacl What of my theory as to the Purchase Prize being a way of identifying future Gold Medal winners? I have to accept that the CASW membership would not be wise to put all their savings on a Purchase Prize artist then going on to win a Gold Medal, but it has happened twice so far. Lowri Davies had work purchased in 2005, by Nêst Thomas for Gwynedd County Council, and Lowri was awarded the Craft Gold Medal in 2009. Peter Bodenham had work purchased by Lord Elis-Thomas for the Senedd in 2008, and Peter was awarded the Craft Gold Medal in 2011. Perhaps if you happen across Nest Thomas or Lord Elis-Thomas at a future Eisteddfod exhibition you should follow them around the show, to see what catches their eye.

In the wreckage of my corrupted memory and theories it celebrated and appreciated for generations to come. I felt embraced by the arts community in Wales, and that I was making a significant contribution. The The Executive Committee’s decision to reinstate the Purchase Purchase Prize was a welcome opportunity to have a piece Prize is important, for CASW, for artists and for the National of recent work in a significant public collection in Wales.
