Orchestra*, Sir Yehudi 85 • "Enigma" Variations (CD, Menuhin* Album) Comments about Cello Concerto Op. 85 • "Enigma" Variations - Elgar Lbe If I could take just one piece of music with me on a desert island, it would be the Elgar cello concerto.I owe over ten versions of this concerto, on LP, CD and SACD, from the early 1928 recording with Beatrice Harrison and the LSO conducted by the composer himself, to the more recent version with Alisa Weilerstein. The “favourite" is, of course, a very personal choice, but as a classical music lover and student cellist this is the version of the Elgar cello concerto I go back to again and again, whether it is simply for the pleasure of listening or when I am studying the piece. To me, to date, this recording has known no equals.In 1986 Michael Kennedy - one of the world's two leading Elgar scholars - wrote an excellent review of the recording for Gramophone Magazine. Michael Kennedy was not the only critic to recognise the quality and uniqueness of the recording: Dr Jerrold Northrop Moore chose this 1985 recording of the Elgar Cello concerto as “finest ever version” for BBC Music Magazine.As far as Yehudi Menuhin conducting, well, he had recorded the Elgar violin concerto with Elgar himself conducting (also available on a very early Emi recording from 1932, I think), I think he knew very well what Elgar wanted to communicate through his music.If you are lucky enough to own the Elgar cello concerto with Julian Lloyd Webber on video, there is a lovely interview before the concert with Julian Lloyd Webber interviewing Yehudi Menuhin and asking him what memories he had of recording the violin concerto with Elgar. Menuhin replied that Elgar was of course a composer and just as his works were “a work of love” he was conducting like a gentleman. He was a Romantic at heart and in whatever he was doing, whether it was music, science, etc. This enormous passion was concealed behind his English nobility and it was in this way that he would communicate his love for the piece and within the piece to the soloist and the orchestra and ultimately to the audience.I think this can be said in the case of Menuhin conducting and Julian Llloyd Webber playing the Elgar cello concerto, too. Great command, tremendous passion but no aggression, no brutality at all.     Christ Recrucified — Issue 114, 1 October 2017 ENSEMBLE — PHILOSOPHY AND THEOLOGY Giuseppe Pennisi: 'Mathis der Maler is one of the nineteenth century's most important operas, yet it is rarely performed. One reason is the demands made on theatre management: a gargantuan orchestra, a double chorus, eleven soloists (of whom eight are principals), seven scenes with various changes of sets, and a performance length of nearly four hours. Another reason is the demands on the audience; under a comparatively simple main plot, there are several minor sub-plots and a libretto dense with philosophical and theological considerations. It is performed in the German world but seldom elsewhere. I recall a mediocre production at the British Royal Opera House some twenty years ago. I have no memory of any productions in Italy. The production I saw and heard on 13 September 2017 was the first in Romania. 'The key theme is the role of the artist and intellectual in a period of political strife. The action takes place in the sixteenth century during the war of religions and the peasants' revolt against their landlords. Almost all the characters are personalities who lived through that period. 'Hindemith spent two years composing the work which had its debut in 1938 in Zurich (since it was forbidden in Germany). It was the result of his desire to write in a more popular way and also to transmit political, philosophical and social messages. Thus, the music is organized in numbers and based, to a certain extent on folksongs and church choral works, though these are only occasionally quoted directly.

    A Welcome from the Artistic Director: David Wordsworth Welcome to 'John Ireland in Chelsea'; a Festival to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of John Ireland. When Bruce Philips, (Director of the John Ireland Trust), and I first discussed this anniversary year I remember him telling me that various Ireland-related events were scheduled to take place throughout the year. This started me thinking how interesting it would be to hear more of this remarkable but still neglected music, programmed together and in venues particularly close to Ireland's heart, alongside woks of his pupils and teacher. Although sung and played in churches the world over, the music of Charles Villiers Stanford is still little-known and sadly dismissed, by those who haven't really heard it, as 'watered down Brahms', so it has been wonderful to be able to programme some of his solo/part-songs, as well as what is, by any standards, a major chamber work; the 2nd Piano Quartet, played by the London Soloists Ensemble, who are making their London debut as an ensemble. Ireland's reputation as a teacher has had something of a bad press in recent years, thanks in no small way to the publication of Benjamin Britten's 'tell all' diaries and letters. These documents serve rather to demonstrate that the young Britten had a pretty poor opinion of anyone apart from himself, although there cannot be any doubt that his teacher was a little jealous of his young contemporary’s enormous talent. Relations between Ireland and Britten became warmer in later years, but with 2013 on the horizon it was never my intention to feature too much of Britten's music, but it is good to be able hear a piece written whilst he was studying with Ireland; the 'Three Divertienti', and a rare performance of his Russian Funeral Music.
