Chapter 1 provides the context for the study and the Army's interest in enhancing performance, characterizes particular techniques, and iT.roduces general issues in evaluating them. Chapter 2 presents findings about the techniques examined and conclusions about appropriate evaluation procedures. Chapter 3 treats the relevant evaluation issues more systematically and presents the committee's philosophy of evaluation. Chapters 4-8 deal with particular techniques but are organized in terms of more general psychological processes. Each chapter attempts to draw on a broader literature concerning the processes being influencedlearning, motor skills, mental states, stress, and social interactions. Chapter 9 considers parapsychological techniques. The report concludes with six appendixes. They (1) briefly summarize the key elements of each enhancement technique, (2) list the 10 papers commissioned by the committee and their authors, (3) list members and activities of the subcommittees and activities of the committee as a whole, (4) list key terms used in the research on particular techniques, (5) discuss application of scientific research by the military, and (6) contain biographical sketches of committee members. Psi is a general term including both extrasensory perception (ESP) and psychokinesis (PK). ESP is a general term used for information acquisition other than by conventional sensory processes of sight, sound, taste, touch and hearing; PK is an ability that influences the environment seemingly by intention or other mental activity alone without motoric intervention. The investigation of Psi might contribute to our knowledge of brain-environment relationships or interaction. Many researchers have carried out a large number of studies examining the possible existence of Psi with positive results, though some researchers do not agree with this point. Seven factors seemingly have a possible link with Psi performance are: aging, relaxation, emotional response, experimenter effects, magnetic field, personality and belief. Notwithstanding the above, this new scientific subject is confronted with the issue of fraud and replicability by different researchers. Studies with a testable model under well-controlled methodology for the Psi training process are wanted.

ORCID: 0000-0003-0041-322X Abstract If all aspects of the mind-brain relationship were adequately explained by classical physics, then there would be no need to propose alternative views. But faced with possibly unresolvable puzzles like qualia and free will, other approaches are required. We propose a non-substance dualism theory, following a suggestion by Heisenberg, whereby the world consists of both ontologically real Possibles that do not obey Aristotle’s law of the excluded middle, and ontologically real Actuals, that do obey the law of the excluded middle. Measurement converts Possibles into Actuals. This quantum-oriented approach solves numerous puzzles about the mind-brain relationship, but it also raises the intriguing possibility that some aspects of mind are nonlocal, and that mind plays an active role in the physical world. We suggest that the mind-brain relationship is partially quantum, and we present evidence supporting that proposition. Keywords: brain-mind, quantum biology, consciousness, quantum measurement 1. Traditional mainstream media images of Witches tell us they are evil “devil worshipping baby killers,” green-skinned hags who fly on brooms, or flaky tree huggers who dance naked in the woods. A variety of mainstream media has worked to support these notions as well as develop new ones. Contemporary American popular culture shows us images of Witches on television shows and in films vanquishing demons, traveling back and forth in time and from one reality to another, speaking with dead relatives, and attending private schools, among other things. None of these mainstream images acknowledge the very real beliefs and traditions of modern Witches and Pagans, or speak to the depth and variety of social, cultural, political, and environmental work being undertaken by Pagan and Wiccan groups and individuals around the world. Utilizing social construction theory, this study examines the “historical process” of the construction of stereotypes surrounding Witches in mainstream American society as well as how groups and individuals who call themselves Pagan and/or Wiccan have utilized the only media technology available to them, the internet, to resist and re- construct these images in order to present more positive images of themselves as well as build community between and among Pagans and nonPagans.

    ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: EROTIC LANGUAGE AS DRAMATIC ACTION IN PLAYS BY LYLY AND SHAKESPEARE Gillian Knoll, Doctor of Philosophy, 2012 Dissertation directed by: Professor Theodore B. Leinwand Department of English This study closely examines the language of desire in the dramatic works of John Lyly and William Shakespeare, and argues that contemplative and analytical speeches about desire function as modes of action in their plays. Erotic speeches do more than express desire in a purely descriptive or perlocutionary capacity distinct from the action of the play—they incite, circulate, and create eros for characters, exposing audiences to the inner workings of the desiring mind and body. For many of Lyly’s and Shakespeare’s characters, words come to constitute erotic experience. My approach to dramatic language draws from the work of cognitive linguists such as George Lakoff and Mark Johnson who argue that our basic conceptual system, according to which we think, speak, and act, is metaphorical in nature. My focus on primary metaphors, which are based on sensorimotor experience, foregrounds the interdependence of erotic language and early modern notions of embodiment. Since language, thought, and action are all subject to this embodied metaphorical system, conceptual metaphors allow Lyly and Shakespeare to dramatize the often invisible, paradoxical, and potentially unknowable experience of erotic desire. My understanding of language as dramatic action derives from a theory about the attribution of human motives that Kenneth Burke, in The Grammar of Motives (1945), called dramatism. Burke uses five key terms to address human motivation—Act, Scene, Agent, Agency, Purpose—and I in turn use each of these terms to make sense of erotic desire on the early modern stage.

Its argument begins in the cave of the magician, Alicandre, where a mystical incantation is heard: "Not in this life, but in the next." These words, and the scene from which they come in Tony Kushner's The Illusion, provide the guiding metaphor for the conceptual journey of this dissertation: the process of reincarnation. The first chapter investigates the deaths of powerful concepts in reader-response theory, rediscovers their existence in other fields such as speech-act theory, and then applies them in modified forms to the emergent field of performance studies. Chapter two analyzes the author as a magician who employs principles of deception by reading vertiginous short stories written by Jorge Luis Borges. I argue that his techniques for manipulating the willing suspension of disbelief (Coleridge) and for creating ineffable oggetti mediatori (impossible objects of proof) suggest that fantastic literature (not magical realism) is the nearest literary equivalent to experiencing magic performed live. With this Borgesian quality of magic's reality-slippage in mind, cross-cultural and cross-media comparisons of murder mysteries and con games are made in chapter three.

The experiments aresummarized in a number of published articles reproduced herein andlisted in the bibliography. The observational data focus on children infirst and second grades in a white middle-class school and in anintegrated lower class school. From the time they enterschool individual children are followed to see how their expectations fortheir own performance in reading, arithmetic, and conductdevelop. Their expectations, and their parents' expectations for them, are repeatedly measured. Children in both places have, onthe average, very high expectations for themselvesbefore they get a report card, higher than their parents..These expectations do notdiminish much when marks are lower than expected; in fact forthe majority, expectations are maintained over first grade. Childrenwhose marks improve are likely to be those whose expectations exceededmarks.

    Hi, everyone. [BACKGROUND] Thanks for coming. I'm Glenn Geher, the Director of Evolutionary Studies. I am thrilled to be introducing Dr. Victoria Ingalls today, who is the first official speaker in the 2011 EvoS Seminar Series. I made a brief little PowerPoint myself because I was so excited about the introduction. Dr. Ingalls' talk is going to be focusing on her evolutionary analysis of children's fantasy literature. What's fantastic about her research, in my mind, it's Evolutionary Studies Program at its best. A trained biologist with a PhD in Zoology from the University of Massachusetts. She has done extensive research on various species, largely on a variety of bird species. Because of her deep understanding of evolution and biological principles, has recently branched out to study human behavior as well. She does it in a way that is true to the animal behavior and evolutionist origins in her background. So she will hare that with us today. The work that she has done recently has integrated literary studies, psychology, and evolutionary biology in a really interesting and seamless way to provide significant insights into who we are. When I was reading her article earlier this week, I got so excited because I found myself quite educated by the process. One of the core things we believe about the evolutionary studies program is that evolutionary theory and its applications are highly relevant to everyday life. People often think that's not the case, which is a concern regarding evolution education. When I was reading her stuff, I thought to myself, my goodness, it is highly relevant because she's talking about sex differences, male-female differences in the creation of heroes in literature.
