É composto por oito grupos de pesquisa, com 37 docentes, sendo 34 docentes efetivos, 3 aposentados, e 42 funcionários, engajados em atividades de ensino, pesquisa e difusão. Estes grupos participam ativamente de dois programas de pós-graduação, três cursos de bacharelado e um de licenciatura, além de ministrar várias disciplinas do ciclo básico em cursos sediados nas demais unidades do Campus. Também administram um elevado número de projetos de pesquisa financiados pela FAPESP, CNPq, MCT, FINEP e outros. A intensa atividade de pesquisa tem assegurado ao FCM um alto índice de publicações com média superior a 5,1 artigos em revistas internacionais indexadas por ano, por docente, bem como a orientação de vários alunos de pós-graduação e supervisão de pós-doutores. O programa de pós-graduação destaca-se entre seus congêneres nacionais, tendo obtido continuamente nota 7 desde a primeira avaliação da CAPES. Devido à sua liderança em diversos campos de pesquisa, o FCM abriga atualmente dois Institutos Nacionais de Ciência e Tecnologia (INCT), Instituto Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia em Óptica e Fotônica e Instituto Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia em Eletrônica Orgânica; o Centro de Pesquisa em Óptica e Fotônica (CePOF - um dos CEPIDs financiados pela FAPESP) e um Capes/Nanobiotecnologia. Participa de: um CEPID denominado Centro Multidisciplinar para o Desenvolvimento de Materiais Cerâmicos com a UFSCar, um INCT com a Universidade Federal de Pernambuco e um INCT com a Unicamp, além de alguns Projetos Temáticos da FAPESP. Um fator de destaque do FCM é sua excelente infraestrutura, montada e aperfeiçoada ao longo dos últimos vinte anos. Dispõe de uma oficina de óptica de precisão que desenvolve uma série de tecnologias que são transferidas ao setor produtivo, gerando novas indústrias e empregos. Isto colaborou para que São Carlos se tornasse um polo de alta tecnologia na área de óptica, com cerca de 8 indústrias. O treinamento técnico e formação de recursos humanos também têm sido importantes na implantação deste segmento. Além do ensino e pesquisa, o FCM mantém ainda uma intensa atividade de extensão. Um dos docentes aposentados desenvolve seus trabalhos no Centro de Divulgação Científica e Cultural – CDCC, com atividades ligadas ao segundo grau, reciclagem de professores e um museu vivo de ciência. Por outro lado, são divulgados junto aos meios de comunicação os resultados práticos alcançados nesta instituição, mostrando que tem um papel social relevante, tanto no desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias, como na resultante geração de empregos. Em seqüência é apresentado no gráfico 3 a evolução do número de bolsistas de produtividade em pesquisa do CNPq ao longo dos últimos cinco anos e no gráfico 4, o número de afastamentos para atividades de pesquisa no exterior no ano de 2011. Na graduação para o Bacharelado em Física, Bacharelado em Ciências Físicas e Biomoleculares, Bacharelado em Física Computacional e Licenciatura em Ciências Exatas (noturno). Para a pós-graduação são ministrados cursos em dois programas: Física (com duas áreas: Física Básica e Física Aplicada, nesta com duas opções: Física Biomolecular e Física iv Computacional) e Interunidades (com uma área: Desenvolvimento, Caracterização e Aplicação de Materiais). (McMaster University) SUPERVISOR: Professor Philip Britz-McKibbin NUMBER OF PAGES: xxix, 347 ii Abstract Capillary electrophoresis mass spectrometry (CE-MS) is a versatile instrumental method for metabolomics, which allows for comprehensive metabolite profiling of volume-limited biological specimens in order to better understand the molecular mechanisms associated with chronic diseases, including an alarming epidemic of obesity worldwide. Multiplexed CE separations enable high-throughput metabolite screening with quality assurance to prevent false discoveries when combined with rigorous method validation, robust experimental designs, complementary statistical methods, and high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) for unknown metabolite identification. In this thesis, multiplexed CE-MS technology is applied for both targeted and untargeted metabolite profiling of various biological fluids, including covalently bound thiol-protein conjugates, as well as free circulating metabolites in serum and plasma, and excreted/bio-transformed compounds in urine due to complex host-gut microflora co-metabolism. This work was applied to characterize aberrant metabolic responses of obese subjects in response to dietary challenges, and measure the benefits of dietary interventions that reduce adiposity without deleterious muscle loss.

On 30 March, the 77 men who’d already leant their support met at what would be the Chemical Society’s first official meeting; at that meeting, Thomas Graham was unanimously elected to be the Society’s first president. The other main decision made at the 30 March meeting was on the system by which the Chemical Society would be organised: “That the ordinary members shall elect out of their own body, by ballot, a President, four Vice-Presidents, a Treasurer, two Secretaries, and a Council of twelve, four of Introduction whom may be non-resident, by whom the business of the Society shall be conducted.” At the first Annual General Meeting the following year, in March 1842, the Bye Laws were formally enshrined, and the ‘Duty of the President’ was stated: “To preside at all Meetings of the Society and Council. To take the Chair at all ordinary Meetings of the Society, at eight o’clock precisely, and to regulate the order of the proceedings. A Member shall not be eligible as President of the Society for more than two years in succession, but shall be re-eligible after the lapse of one year.” Little has changed in the way presidents are elected; they still have to be a member of the Society and are elected by other members.
