He believes it did a disservice both to the pedagogy of mathematical education by presenting the subject as a bunch of tricks without any conceptual rigor, and to science and technology studies in India STS by adhering to dubious standards of historiography. Hartosh Singh Bal notes that whilst Krishna Tirtha's attempts might be somewhat acceptable in light of his nationalistic inclinations during colonial rule Krishna Tirtha had left his spiritual endeavors to be appointed as the principal of a college, set up during the British Raj to counter Macaulayism , it set the grounds for further ethno-nationalistic abuse of historiography by Hindu Nationalist parties; Thomas Trautmann views the development of Vedic Mathematics in a similar manner. But although it was new to the Mediterranean world, it was really the classical, traditional teachings of the ancient rishis of India that even today comprise Sanatana Dharma, the Eternal Dharma, that goes far beyond religion into actual realization through the practice of yoga. (See Appendix Two: The Yoga of the Nath Yogis and Jesus.) The material in this book will reveal that this statement is simple fact without exaggeration. Jesus and the Apostle Thomas taught nothing new in either Israel or India. Their religion was identical with that which Jesus studied in India, that which is found in the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita and other fundamental scriptures and spiritual writings of India. Jesus and Saint Thomas taught nothing but Sanatana Dharma. The deformed entity known today as “Christianity” is a corruption and betrayal of their actual teachings. Jesus learned his wisdom from the sages of India and so must those who would follow him. I am not the originator of this idea. Its range extends from the most concrete values of numerical compu- tation to the most abstract aspects of the dynamics of intelligence. The computational methods of Vedic Mathematics have been found to be easier to learn, faster, and more enjoyable than conventional methods. The intrinsic flexibility of the Vedic system of calculation develops the students’ creativity and clarity of mind. The system of Vedic Mathematics is derived from the Vedic tradition or knowl- edge, recently revitalized and reinterpreted by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the form of a modern systematic science, known as Maharishi’s Vedic Science. According to Mahar- ishi, at its deepest level, Vedic Mathematics is the exploration and exposition of the self- interacting structure of pure consciousness, which is the orderly basis of all phenomena in nature. By connecting mathematics to its source in the field of pure consciousness, Vedic Mathematics has the potential to bring fulfillment to all areas of mathematics and to solve the current crisis in mathematics education.

  • Role of Vedic Mathematics in Driving Optimal Solutions for Real Life Problems
ROLE OF VEDIC MATHEMATICS IN DRIVING OPTIMAL SOLUTIONS FOR REAL LIFE PROBLEMS Deepshikha Bhargava1, Anita Arya2 1,2AIIT, Department Amity University Rajasthan (India) ABSTRACT In this paper, we show the importance of Vedic mathematics to derive the optimal solution for real life problems. Vedic Mathematics is the name given to the ancient system of Mathematics which was rediscovered from the Vedas between 1911 and 1918 by Sri Bharati Krsna Tirthaji (1884-1960). According to his research all of mathematics is based on sixteen Sutras or word-formulae. It is not only useful for arithmetic computations but also helpful for solving problems related to other branches of Mathematics as Algebra, Trigonometry and Calculus etc. Vedic mathematics not only helps in faster computations but also in determining the right solutions to a problem. Keywords: Algebra, Arithmetic, Calculus, Sutra, and Vedas. I. INTRODUCTION Vedic Mathematics is the name given to the ancient system of Mathematics which was rediscovered from the Vedas between 1911 and 1918 by Sri Bharati Krisna Tirthraji (1884-1960). According to his research all of mathematics is based on sixteen Sutras or word-formulae. For example, 'Vertically and crosswise` is one of these Sutras. These formulae describe the way the mind naturally works and are therefore a great help in directing the student to the appropriate method of solution. Instead of learning by repetition, vedic mathematics involves logic and understanding the fundamental concepts. One can do calculations much faster than done by using the conventional method that is taught in schools. It teaches the students the same problem in different ways.

  • Vedic Maths’ : Myths and Facts
Vedic Maths’ : myths and facts S.G. Dani Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Homi Bhabha Road, Mumbai 400 005 What is “Vedic” Mathematics? I am referring here what has popularly come to be understood by that name, and not what it should strictly mean. Going by the propaganda reports “Vedic Maths”’ is an “amazingly compact and powerful system of calculation”, and one also hears things like “once you have learnt the 16 sutras by heart, you can solve any long problem orally”, and so on. Incredible hyperbole indeed !! Actually it is nothing of the sort. It is essentially a compilation of some tricks in simple arithmetic and algebra. The term “trick” is not used here in any pejorative sense, meaning to convey deceit of some sort. It just means a short cut, with a bit of psychological appeal to it. “Vedic” mathematics is indeed a collection of short cut procedures, applicable to only an assortment of special situations, and quite an incoherent one at that. It is thus really not a “system”, though there is a popular misconception to that effect. The so called Vedic mathematics (VM) first made its appearance in print in the book ‘Vedic Mathematics’[12], first published in 1965, authored by Sri Bharati Krishna Tirtha, who was the Shankaryacharya of the Puri Mutt from 1925 until he passed away in 1960. The book was published posthu- mously by some disciples of the Shankaracharya. The book presents some “su- tras”, claimed to be from the ancient Vedic lore, and describes some proce- dures, supposedly coming from the sutras, to deal with some specific arithmeti- cal/algebraic problems.

Prof. Computer Science, Ashoka Center for Business & Computer Studies, Nashik, India Abstract: Vedic Mathematics is the former system of Mathematics which was formulated and encapsulated in the modern form by Jagadguru Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha Ji. During the period of 1919 – 1927 he formulated a concept of Vedic Maths by deep meditation and intuition with the help of Vedas and Scriptures. He postulated sixteen sutras (formulae) and 13 sub sutras (corollaries) of Vedic Mathematics. These sutras are easy to understand, apply and remember. With the help of these sutras one can calculate faster than conventional maths and hence these are very much helpful in competitive exams like MPSC, UPSC, GET, JEE, IBPS and many other. Keywords: Base, Division, Sutras, Vedas, Vedic Mathematics INTRODUCTION It is observed that many students as well as adults fear Mathematics and try to avoid it due to inefficiency in carrying out long multiplication & division, finding square & square roots and cube & cube roots. Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha Ji Maharaj, 143rd Shankaracharya of Govardhan Peeth, Puri, thought deeply on this and tried to simplify these processes and constructed 16 Sutras and 13 Sub sutras by studying ancient Indian scriptures. Swamiji wrote a book “Vedic Mathematics”, the book and its magic effect of speedy calculations are very much pleasing. It increases speed of calculations as well as develop interest of students in Mathematics.

  • Philosophy of Mathematics
Chapter 1: Philosophy of Mathematics: A Historical Introduction 1.0 Introduction Mathematics presents itself as a science in the general sense in which history is a science, namely as sector in the quest for truth. Historians aim at establishing the truth about what was done by and what happened to human beings in the past. 12 The history of mathematics is primarily an investigation into the origin of discoveries in mathematics, the standard mathematical methods and notations of the past. In this chapter, first we make a brief survey of the history of mathematics in view of placing Gödel’s Theorems within the historical trajectory of mathematics. Next we present contemporary developments in the philosophy of mathematics as a platform to delineate the relationship between mathematics and logic in general and also to expose the philosophical implications of Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem in particular. 1.1 Historical Phases in the Development of Mathematics The most ancient mathematical texts available are Plimpton 322 (Babylonian mathematics c. 1900 BCE), the Moscow Mathematical Papyrus (Egyptian mathematics c. 1850 BC), the Rhind Mathematical Papyrus (Egyptian mathematics c. 12 Refer Michel Dummett, “What is Mathematics About?” in Alexander George (ed.), Mathematics and Mind , Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1994, 11-26. 21 1650 BC), and the Shulba Sutras (Indian mathematics c. 800 BC). 13 All these texts concern the so-called Pythagorean theorem, which seems to be the most ancient and widespread mathematical development after basic arithmetic and geometry. Egyptian and Babylonian mathematics were then further developed in Greek and Hellenistic mathematics, which is generally considered to be very important for greatly expanding both the method and the subject matter of mathematics.

It is the queen of all sciences. Yet, it is a horrifying word for many across the world. It has been considered as a dry subject, studied as an obligation. The application of Mathematics in subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy, Accountancy, Statistics, Geography and even Economics, has left people with no choice but to learn it, whether they like it or not. School children feel that they have to deal with Mathematics only till they finish school. When they enter college, this dream is often shattered. Things do not end there. After graduation, when they appear for competitive exams or an aptitude test for a corporate job, their plight gets worse. After having got habituated to using calculators all these years, they find it hard even to add a list of numbers without its help. Many youngsters are not able to crack these exams only because of their challenge in numerical ability. What a tragedy would it be for those who are unable to pursue their dream career and have to be satisfied with what they have got! Let us face it. Mathematics is a subject that chases us like a shadow in our school, college and professional life. How to deal with such a problem? Many researchers have pondered and worked towards solving this ‘mathematical’ puzzle.
