Ferré, R. Flores and B. Theilen encouraged me to accept the challenge of a PhD in the Economics Department of the Rovira i Virgili University (URV). In fact, it seemed that my passion for studying was looking for an excuse to continue at the University, and the possibility of doing a PhD was an unexpected but very welcome opportunity. In 2014, when I was completing my master’s degree, I had to decide the subject of my thesis. I was well aware of the importance of this decision. If I had to spend the following four years working on the same topic, it had to be something that really motivated me. I was lucky enough to work with the professor who best understood my interests and motivations – Economics, Geography and Culture. That person was J.M. Arauzo. He has unconditionally supported me over the years, by providing me not only with invaluable feedback and time, but also with the best guidance above and beyond just the academic side of the PhD. Josep Maria, I am infinitely grateful for everything. A few months after beginning the PhD, A. Moreno provided priceless added value to my thesis in terms of Urban Economics. She is one of the most talented and passionate people I have ever known. When you work with Ana, you never stop learning. This is why I want to thank her for her patience, dedication, empathy and optimism from the very beginning. Special thanks to R. Boix and M. Manjón who have provided invaluable feedback on some papers stemming from my doctoral dissertation, thus contributing to my work. In particular, I appreciate M. Manjón’s efforts to understand my interest in the indústries xupiguais – as he calls them – and I hope that by reading this thesis he will change his mind, at least a little bit. None of this would have been possible without the financial support provided by the QURE, the Economics Department of the URV, the CREIP, the Chair for the Promotion of Business Innovation of the URV and the Department of Universities, Research and the Information Society of the Catalan Government. I also acknowledge the SGAE Foundation and the Spanish Regional Science Association who awarded my thesis proposal and Chapter 5 of this thesis, respectively. Thanks to this financial support I have been able to attend several seminars, workshops and conferences giving me the chance to learn from some of the most brilliant scholars working in the domain of Regional and Urban Economics. In addition, during these conferences I have been lucky enough to meet many interesting and friendly PhD students from all around the world turning the PhD into an even more an enriching experience. ix UNIVERSITAT ROVIRA I VIRGILI ESSAYS ON LOCATION PATTERNS OF CREATIVE INDUSTRIES Eva Coll Martínez My thanks also go to all the members of the Economics Department and of my research group (QURE), as well as their administrative and IT support teams. I am especially grateful to M. Lleixà, L. Rofin, E. Torner and L. Siles who always assisted me in dealing with the administrative procedures of the PhD with lots of patience and kindness. During these years I have had the opportunity to share an office and experiences with many colleagues (S3.1 & S3.6) without whom the PhD would not have been the same. A PhD can be very demanding sometimes, and having such nice colleagues by my side has been very important for me. In particular I wish to thank my academic big sisters, Elisenda and Karen, for being such lovely and caring persons and for the unforgettable fun times we spent together. Thank you for always being there. The PhD has also given me the chance to live one of the best experiences of my life at the Laboratoire d’Économie d’Orléans in Orléans (France), thanks to Prof. C. Turcu’s kind invitation. The atmosphere there was indescribable, both on the academic and the personal sides. I want to thank all my colleagues there for being the best French culture teachers and for making me feel part of the LÉO Team from the first day. I am especially grateful to my dear Yunzhi for being the best pétanque partner, for her sense of humour and unconditional friendship. I also want to mention Maryse and ma chère Myrtille, a lovely black cat, who became my family there. When doing research into Social Science, it is sometimes difficult to test our hypotheses in real life. In this regard, I would like to thank my creative friend Cristina for providing me with her first-hand experience in the creative industries, and also for her support and interest. Last but not least, I am deeply grateful to my parents Isabel and Joaquim who, even at the very bad times, have always been full of wisdom and positivity, urging me to follow my dreams.
