Where necessary copyright clearance on photographs, maps or illustrations must also be obtained prior to submission. Maps.     Twentieth Century Naval Dockyards Devonport and Portsmouth: Characterisation Report PART FOUR CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS The final focus of this report is to develop the local, national and international contexts of the two dockyards to highlight specific areas of future research. Future discussion of Devonport and Portsmouth as distinct designed landscapes would coherently organise the many strands identified in this report. The Museum of London Archaeology Portsmouth Harbour Hinterland Project carried out for Heritage England (2015) is a promising step in this direction. It is emphasised that this study is just a start. By delivering the aim and objectives, it has indicated areas of further fruitful research. Project aim: to characterise the development of the active naval dockyards at Devonport and Portsmouth, and the facilities within the dockyard boundaries at their maximum extent during the twentieth century, through library, archival and field surveys, presented and analysed in a published report, with a database of documentary and building reports. This has been delivered through Parts 1-4 and Appendices 2-4. Project objectives 1 To provide an overview of the twentieth century development of English naval dockyards, related to historical precedent, national foreign policy and naval strategy. 2 To address the main chronological development phases to accommodate new types of vessels and technologies of the naval dockyards at Devonport and Portsmouth. 3 To identify the major twentieth century naval technological revolutions which affected British naval dockyards. 4 To relate the main chronological phases to topographic development of the yards and changing technological and strategic needs, and identify other significant factors. 5 To distinguish which buildings are typical of the twentieth century naval dockyards and/or of unique interest.

It marks the culmination of a year-long programme of activity in 2018-2019 which included consultation with over 200 partners and stakeholders and granular research into baseline conditions across the Estuary. Frigate of the American War He left to announce the arrival of royal troops to fi ght of Independence the English occupier on the side of the insurgents. The 1779 - 1793 crossing was accomplished in the record time of 48 days. A 1/48 SCALE MONOGRAPH This performance was due to Hermione’s excellent nautical qualities. In fact, Hermione was a new-generation frigate The book includes all timbering plans built before the revolution. Started on the ways in December Jean-Claude Lemineur 1778, she benefi ted from important advances that were Patrick Villiers brought about by a new concept developed during the second half of the 18th century that translated into seagoing capabilities well beyond those of vessels built according to older designs. Like the other frigates of her generation she allied speed and fi repower, allowing her to rival those of the Royal Navy. But what did Hermione look like? Surprisingly, nothing specifi c remains concerning her, except for the information that she was constructed on the same plans as Concorde, built in 1777. As it turns out, Concorde’s lines were taken off by the Royal Navy after her capture in 1783, and the plans were kept at the NMM in Greenwich. It is fair to believe that Hermione is similar. However, the plans reveal some peculiarities specifi c to Concorde, which is and not present on Hermione. Her battery is pierced for 14 gunports to each side, not counting the chase ports.

    PRESS RELEASE MONDAY 1 JULY 2013 DOCKYARD CHURCH RESCUE DEAL CELEBRATED The future of one of Kent’s most important buildings looks to be secure following a landmark rescue deal between a council and a building preservation trust. Grade II* listed Dockyard Church at Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey has lain empty and derelict since a fire in 2001. However, on 5 July, the building will pass into the ownership of the Spitalfields Historic Buildings Trust following its compulsory purchase by Swale Borough Council. The church, with its impressive classical portico, was built in 1826-28 to the designs of George Ledwell Taylor (1788-1873) to serve the officers of the new naval dockyard at Sheerness. The dockyard was built in one campaign to a masterplan by the great engineer John Rennie (1761-1821) and was one of the architectural wonders of its age. Since the closure of the naval base in 1961, the dockyard has been run as a commercial port. A number of important buildings were demolished in the 1960s and 70s with others, including the church, sold off to private developers. In 2001 the church suffered a devastating fire, and has since stood as a forlorn ruin as plans for its redevelopment failed to materialise. Now, as part of an initiative backed by English Heritage and local campaigners, Swale Borough Council has stepped in to compulsory purchase the church to enable its restoration by a building preservation trust. The Spitalfields Trust, which in 2010 fronted the successful purchase of 10 listed buildings in the residential quarter of the dockyard, has stepped in to take on the building and implement emergency works.
