  • A Case Study of Present Day Waterford County, Ireland
POWER IN PLACE-NAMES: A CASE STUDY OF PRESENT DAY WATERFORD COUNTY, IRELAND A thesis presented to the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts Jessica E. Greenwald August 2005 This thesis entitled POWER IN PLACE-NAMES: A CASE STUDY OF PRESENT DAY WATERFORD COUNTY, IRELAND by JESSICA E. GREENWALD has been approved for the Department of Geography and the College of Arts and Sciences by Timothy Anderson Associate Professor of Geography Benjamin M. Ogles Interim Dean, College of Arts and Sciences GREENWALD, JESSICA E. M.A. August 2005. Geography PowerU In Place-Names: A Case Study Of Present Day Waterford County, Ireland (85U pp.) Director of Thesis: Timothy Anderson This study investigates the present day toponymns of Waterford County, Ireland. By using the Land Ordnance Survey of Ireland maps, a database was created with the place names of the county. This study draws upon both traditional and contemporary theories and methods in Geography to understand more fully the meaning behind the place names on a map. In the “traditional” sense, it focuses on investigating changes in the landscape wrought by humans through both time and space (the naming of places). In a more “contemporary” sense, it seeks to understand the power relationships and social struggles reflected in the naming of places and the geography of those names. As such, this study fills a void in the current toponymns and cartographic literature, which are both focused mainly on patterns of diffusion and power struggles in North America.

ROINN COSANTA. BUREAU OF MILITARY HISTORY, 1913-21. STATEMENT BY WITNESS. 1,130 DOCUMENT NO. W.S. Witness Edmond Power, 52 Slievekeale Road, Waterford. Identity. 2nd Battalion Adjutant, West Waterford Brigade; Battalion Adjutant later. Subject. West waterford Brigade, 1917-1923. Conditions, if any, Stipulated by Witness. Nil File No. S.2424 Form B.S.M.2 STATEMENT OF EDMUND POWER 52 Slievekeale Road, Waterford in the of Clonea I was born in 1896 parish (power) in townland of which is about the killerguile, four miles south in the of carrick-on-suir, and is situated county of Waterford. I was the of a family of youngest thirteen children. My parents belonged to the farming community and my early school-days were spent at Clonea National School. As a young chap I played hurling with the Clonea Club and I can/safely say I always had a strong national outlook. This I attribute mainly to my parents, my father being a very ardent 'Land Leaguer' and my mother a fluent Gaelic speaker, as was many another inhabitant of Clonea at that time. I left s chool at 15 years of age and was apprenticed to the grocery and spirit business of Percy Kirwan, the wellknown athlete, in Kilmacthomas, Co. Waterford. In that village I Wasn't long until I had a hurling team going. Although a company of National Volunteers was started in Kilmacthomas, sometime in 1914, I wasn't at all interested in joining up. I had a very poor opinion of these Volunteers if it came to fighting for freedom, and I disapproved strongly of the pro-British influence of John Redmond, the head of the National Volunteers, as he was regarded then.

CCJ Newsletter - Issue 25 Summer Newsletter 2019 ~Issue 25 Highlights Editorial Joint Oireachtas visit Dunhill, There is now greater awareness of social enterprise as a separate and distinct sector following years of research by government EU Citizens Dialogue departments, third level colleges, agencies, communities and “The Enterprising Community” (2018) published by Dr. Senan Cooke. The Department of Rural and Community Development completed its final public consultation on its draft social enterprise policy on 14th May. It received many comments and contributions from organisations and individuals across the country, then completed an analysis of the invaluable feedback. The official policy has been finalised and is ready for launch. All involved in the social enterprise sector is hoping the policy can be endorsed by cabinet and launched before the end of July and Dáil summer recess. The next challenge will be to implement the policy. The sector, in particular those who have been engaged in the research have high expectations that the new policy will dramatically facilitate new start- ups, consolidations and expansions of social enterprise projects over the next few years. Built into the policy is a review of progress in 2021. Many people working on the ground have for a long time believed it is a sleeping giant with enormous socio-economic Remote Working potential. They are convinced the new policy is the missing link in awakening this potential to utilise the many valuable and dormant resources that are available to the sector. If the resources and Killinkere Co. Cavan opportunities we know are made available in a Dunhill Community and Copper co-ordinated and galvanised way, it will Coast Geopark Nationwide transform every rural and urban community in the country.
