This cultural dimension of technology will be examined with reference to the introduction and use of the potter’s wheel at Phylakopi on Melos (Greece) during the Late Bronze Age. At this site, the co-existence of two diVerent manufac- turing techniques was so deeply embedded that, despite the presence of hybrid vessels, many aspects of the pottery produc- tion had become linked to either a local (hand-built) or Minoanising (wheel-thrown) tradition. It will be argued that the traditional hand-building technique was associated with individual and rooted facets of the Melian identity (such as kin- ship, social class, or gender). Reasons for the initial stimulus for adoption of the potter’s wheel are considered to lie in its potential for competitive social practice through association with exotic, symbolically laden technologies, craft products and consumption rituals. The gradual application of the technology to ever more complex vessels, on the other hand, corre- sponds to the apprenticeship sequence outlined by Roux and Corbetta and may indicate an incomplete learning process or a certain lack of practice opportunities among local potters. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. SHAW Bronze Age Aegean Harboursides ABSTRACT R ecent excavations and exploration have contributed new and crucial information warranting a review of our earlier understanding of Bronze Age Aegean harboursides, especially of the topographical conditions and geographical locations selected by the Aegeans. Major sites which can be cited are Kea, Kommos, Zakros, and Amnisos. Further information derives from precious pictorial depictions of coastal towns and possible harbours, as in frescoes found at Kea and, especially, in the West House at Akrotiri, or in the recently published sealing from Chania. The paper will discuss this new material and address questions of defence, ship storage, relations with inland towns, trade, relative water-levels, and the nature of the possible harbour installations during the Middle and Late Bronze Age in the Aegean. Introduction With its often large, well-furnished buildings, the Akrotiri settlement (Fig. 1) appears relatively opulent in comparison with Ayia Irini on Kea (Fig. 2)or more densely built Phylakopi on Milos (Fig. 3). At Akrotiri, of course, there still remain unusual contrasts among the building groups. For instance, the agglutinative room-group B/D, which probably consisted of three or more residences, appears to be sprawling in comparison with the much larger, more carefully planned ashlar buildings, whether one considers the relatively small West House, or Ashlars III and IV which in size and with the care given to their construction compare favourably with the largest of the houses at Ayia Irini (House A) or at Phylakopi (the Mansion) or, for that matter, with large houses in the Knossos area.

    THE MYCENAEAN SEMINAR 1954–2017 Olga Krzyszkowska and Andrew Shapland This list gives titles of individual seminars (and related events) with links and references to their publication in BICS. Initially discussions and some summaries were printed in the Seminar minutes, which were privately circulated (only from 21st January 1959 were minutes headed ‘Mycenaean Seminar’). The first published summaries appeared in BICS 13 (1966), soon superseding the minutes. Some seminars/public lectures were published as full-length articles (page references to these are given in bold). Summaries were usually, but not always, published in the subsequent year’s BICS and some never appeared at all. However, from 1993–94 onwards summaries of all Seminars and virtually all public lectures relating to Aegean prehistory held at the Institute were published in BICS. The summaries for 2014–15 were the last to appear in the print edition of BICS, which has now become thematic. The summaries for 2015–16 and 2016–17 are published in an online supplement to BICS available at the Humanities Digital Library. 1953–1954 The first meeting was on 27 January 1954, and there were four subsequent meetings that academic year. ALTHOUGH as long ago as 1876 Schliemann's excavations at Mycenae revealed to us the prehistoric civilisation of the Peloponnese, it is only comparatively recently that its pre-Mycenaean culture has become known. For Crete the epoch-making excavations of Sir Arthur Evans have made clear to us the long pottery sequence which illustrates the development of prehistoric civilisation in that island from the end of neolithic times, through the great age of the palace of Knossps, to its decline and fall in the Third Late Minoan period. For the Cyclades the pottery sequence from Phylakopi, with other finds, provides us with a series parallel to the Cretan; and for Thessaly, too, a provisional series has • been established.
