2 Message from our Founder and Honorary President The leader and originator of the ISTEK family that has respect, love and devotion in its roots is Atatürk. His children are walking in his footsteps, therefore they show characteristics which he expects and has determined for the Turkish nation. Atatürk means wisdom. Of the most important revolutions that reflect his productivity and character which is beyond generations is his revolution in the area of . Education is a serious and divine business. Just as the great leader Atatürk said, it is essential to raise generations who are intellectually, spiritually and culturally free. We have founded the ISTEK foundation and Yeditepe University for this reason. A good future can be shaped by a youth who makes the right choices by knowing themselves. One of the most critical decisions in this process is choosing the right profession and university. The world is changing. New ideas emerge every day. A new idea has to be created all the time. If this does not happen, it means that humanity is not moving forward. After agricultural and 3 industrial revolutions, our world is experiencing a new age called “the information age”. The concept of globalism has lifted borders, merged all markets and has lifted local competition to universal levels. In a world where there is too much and widespread information, there are two main principles for individuals, institutions and nations to stay alive: to obtain information and to share this information efficiently by using information technologies. For communication to take place efficiently, it has become obligatory to know at least a foreign language very well, preferably English. The service sector has gradually increased its share in the gross national product in developed countries. Therefore, besides traditional education, new business areas and opportunities emerge from sectors such as customs, logistics, tourism, civil aviation and real estate. At our university, we aim to educate our students with a modern approach, and want them to acquire all the skills necessary to be successful in business life in an ever-changing world. Together with English and other languages, the latest computer applications, over 750 cooperation agreements with European, American and Asian universities, research and education laboratories equipped with the latest technologies, apart from learning students are acquiring all necessary knowledge and skills from professionals from the academic and business world. In the last 30 years at ISTEK foundation and Yeditepe University, we have raised at least 100 thousand self-confident kids who embrace the world. Our graduates are and will continue to be sought after professionals not only in but also in the whole world. They are representing our country in the best way in all areas. Yeditepe is a very peaceful university. Our campus conditions do not exist at any university in Turkey. This is the post-modern version of a Seljuk social complex. It is a campus that has a philosophy and an identity and it represents our own origins. The most efficient way to reach development and prosperity is to follow the enlightening principles of the Great Leader Atatürk’s principles and science. FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE

- The much heralded Yeditepe University Faculty of Architecture was finally established in 2014. Our new faculty consists of the Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Industrial Design, which 20 were once attached to the Fine Arts Faculty. Although our faculty has only recently been formally established, these departments have been in existence since the establishment of our university in 1996. We believe that this new configuration of connected disciplines will better serve in the development of a multidisciplinary education system. Considering architecture holistically, our faculty’s newly configured programs will nurture better equipped graduates. Likewise, our students will find the opportunity of getting training in a broad array of fields from architectural design to interior design or from furniture design to landscape design. Just as before, the collaboration of our university with industry is maintained through obligatory apprenticeships, seminars, and vocational trips. - Our aim is to bring the students up to scratch and to facilitate their integration into professional life. As before, only the interior architecture department will continue to admit students by means of a special examination. As well as the Erasmus Exchange Program, students can benefit from ‘sub-branch’ or ‘double major’ programs. They also have an opportunity to follow a Master’s degree at the Department of Architecture. - The main objective of our faculty is to nurture exceptional, self-confident, multifaceted, socially conscious students dedicated to the ethical values of their chosen profession. In addition, our main mission is to train artists who will integrate with the world in their own branches of art while maintaining their own long-standing culture. 21 Yeditepe University

FACULTY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

- Yeditepe University Faculty of Arts and Sciences comprises 10 departments that offer education and research opportunities across various disciplines. With 80 experienced senior academic members, our faculty includes Departments of Turkish Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, Anthropology, History, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology and Translation Studies in Social Sciences; Physics and Mathematics in Natural and Applied Sciences. This kaleidoscopic range gives our Faculty a breadth of knowledge and experience that provides students with an excellent platform for their future careers and activities. - More than 10000 students across the university are given a solidly based interdisciplinary education. Except for classes at the Turkish Language and Literature department, the medium of instruction is English. All students enrolling at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences are expected to be at the same level of language proficiency, attending the English Preparatory School before they start their faculty education in order to reach the required level. Master’s programs are offered at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences’ Departments of English Language and Literature, 22 Mathematics, Physics, Anthropology, History, and Turkish Language and Literature. The Departments of Physics, Anthropology, Philosophy, Mathematics and History offer both Master and Doctorate programs. Our NGO-supported social, cultural and industrial connections enrich these programs as our academic staff conduct dynamic interaction and integration efforts with NGOs. Faculty of Arts and Sciences graduates were accredited as teachers from the year 2013 onwards by Turkey’s Higher Education Board. Students will thus be able to graduate as teachers when they take the necessary formative classes. - Our first priority is to constantly improve the quality of education in our faculty. We also focus on program accreditations as an essential part of internationalization. Our Philosophy, Physics, Mathematics, Turkish Language and Literature, Psychology, Anthropology, English Language and Literature, and Translation studies programs within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, have been FEDEK-certified for five years. The Sociology and History departments of our faculty have also completed the application process for FEDEK accreditation. - Our Physics Department’s Metrology and Calibration laboratory (YUKAL) has been accredited by the Turkish Accreditation Agency as a requirement of TS EN ISO/IEC 17025:2010 standards. This laboratory provides our students with sophisticated training in metrology calibration, as well as serving Turkish industry in the measuring temperature and size. - We are committed to a continuous process of revision, renewal and activation of our wealth of accumulated knowledge and experience in the educational field. This enables us to transfer knowledge and know-how from our social, cultural and industrial environment. Out of a total of around 18,000 undergraduates, some 2,100 are enrolled at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, which also boasts some 3,000 post-graduate Master’s students. FACULTY OF COMMERCE

The Faculty of Commercial Sciences at Yeditepe University aims to nurture prescient, innovative, creative and competent individuals with the ability to continuously adapt to change and innovation in the commercial environment. In this regard, conventional approaches are enhanced by industry-wide collaborations in our Departments of Computer Science and Technology, Tourism and Hospitality Business, International Finance, International Logistics and Transportation, International Commerce and Business, Management Information Sciences, Civil Aviation Business, and Electronic Commerce and Technology Management. This twin approach contributes to the creation and development of the specialized and unique areas of experience required by the labor market in today’s world. Yeditepe’s numerous affiliation and partnership agreements with European, US, Canadian, Asian and Far Eastern universities enable our students to expand their educational opportunities internationally, developing their multilingual and cross-cultural communication skills on the global stage by gaining a deeper understanding of other cultures and systems. 24 Our faculty provides the most up to date theoretical information to students by means of our inter-disciplinary infrastructure. We regard this as a key distinguishing feature of the faculty, which serves to create an area of practical application on which to base and implement information and knowledge acquired during their course work. Our faculty also provides the opportunity for our students to learn two foreign languages to develop their communication skills in today’s global business world. In this context, students may learn one or more of Russian, Chinese, Spanish, German, French and Latin in addition to English, which is the core education language at Yeditepe University, Our faculty offers double major and sub-branch programs to successful students in order for them to specialize in various areas and graduate with majors from multiple departments. Existing multi-departmental courses within the same faculty gives students a significant advantage in terms of graduating with a double-major. When our students select double major and sub-branch programs, they gain a wider expertise in line with their specific interest and skills. The current apprentice program enables students to transform their theoretical information into practice to prepare them for today’s fast-changing business world. The Faculty of Commercial Sciences provides education at international standards by means of its modern education programs and practices. Alongside the importance attached by our faculty to practical learning, theoretical classes are taught by faculty members specialized in their majors; practical courses are given by recognized industry specialists. There is a close relationship between theory and practice in the Faculty of Commercial Sciences, based on the idea that graduates will launch their careers one step ahead by being equipped with skills beyond the immediate requirements of their industry. 25 Yeditepe University

FACULTY OF COMMUNICATION

Our unique educational perspective is designed to guide individual undergraduates to be able to thrive in the dynamic and challenging world of communications in today’s rapidly changing world. Yeditepe University Faculty of Communication aims to raise individuals who are able to master well-qualified communication in a world where developments in communication technologies have dissolved physical distances between people and where everyone is able to hear and see one another and share their feelings. People are often unable to control meaning in the midst of the sheer volume and intensity of message traffic; messages are not effectively delivered to the audience. This may be one of the biggest issues of the 21st century. Organizations in the field of communication are in need of individuals who know how to read current issues on the basis of knowledge, experience and vision. 26 As Yeditepe University Faculty of Communication, we believe that faculties such as ours ought to differentiate themselves from one another in terms of curriculum. For this reason, we define a student profile distinct from other faculties of communication. We aim to raise graduates who are able to follow the current developments in Turkey and globally, intellectuals who can work in the field of communication and in all sectors that use communication as a tool, who are able to participate in senior management decisions, and competent in developing the required communication strategies. In our Faculty of Communication, students receive a multi-disciplinary education by attending courses in their faculties as well as departments outside their own faculty. We have a three-stage system to improve the practical skills of our students who are equipped with a strong institutional infrastructure. Students benefit from interaction with leading experts in the sector during lectures and seminars; practical internship in the sector with the contribution of our university; activities and seminars organized by student clubs; and intense applied opportunities in the faculty’s dedicated studios, workshops and laboratories. In addition to having a distinct educational perspective, the Faculty of Communication engages in a range of programs and agreements in order to nurture international perspectives in our students and to enrich their experience. Students and academics from different countries are invited to our university while our students are able to study abroad during certain periods of their education thanks to a number of active exchange programs. 27 Yeditepe University

Prior to clinical studies, our students are trained in Simulation Laboratories using ‘robotic patients’, a first in dentistry studies in Turkey. Students being trained with real patients work in fully sterilized training clinics with the most advanced facilities. Diagnostics and treatment are conducted in computerized units where patients benefit from the latest developments in dentistry technology. Our faculty is equipped with five surgery rooms where operations under local and general anesthesia can be carried out by surgeons and simultaneously monitored by students in their conference halls or classrooms via intra-oral and/or external cameras. The students are able to question the surgeons during ongoing operations. The Faculty of Dentistry at Yeditepe University gained ISO 9001 certification in Training and Patient Services in 2008, EFP (European Federation of Periodontology) accreditation in Periodontal Studies at graduate level in 2005, and ADEE (Association for Dental Education in Europe) certification in 2008. Following a 1,500-item audit on our faculty by the world’s leading patient services auditing body JCI in 2009, which encompassed staff management, architectural infrastructure, technical equipment and emergency measures, the faculty gained JCI accreditation in all fields. JCI accreditation was repeated following completion of their three-yearly audit in 2012. These words, contained in the JCI accreditation report, remain a great source of pride to us: “The Turkish nation should be proud of The Dentistry Faculty at Yeditepe University, which continuously increases its quality by focusing on this challenging goal. We would like to congratulate all the members of the Dentistry Faculty at Yeditepe University on improving their service quality and following the regulations regarding patient safety’’. Thus our faculty is the first and only dentistry faculty in the world to have been accredited twice by JCI. We have also applied for ADA (the American Dentistry Association) accreditation, having successfully passed the preliminary audit. Ours is the first faculty in the world which has applied for this accreditation.

Educational and personal development preferences, specialization courses and social sciences courses are included in all programs in line with individual students’ skills. Academically successful students can take advantage of ‘sub-branch’ or ‘double major’ programs conducted in cooperation with other departments in our faculty, or certain departments in other faculties. These programs, which provide a wide variety of opportunities for students heading for business life or who want to continue with postgraduate studies, are conducted according to the student’s preferred options. 34 Rather than aiming just for a vocational training, our faculty instructs students with a view to nurturing cultured productive graduates who have a command of the fundamental knowledge, learn and question continuously. For this purpose, our educational methodology applies up-to-date, flexible programs; computer labs are widely used and innovative educational technologies are utilized. Moreover, small class sizes provide platforms for discussion, and an academic advisor is appointed for each student. Apart from professional training, every student takes the Humanities, Management, Law, and Economics courses. Students can also take advantage of foreign language learning (French, German, Russian, Spanish, Arabic and others). Cooperation agreements are also available for the benefit of academically successful students wishing to fulfill a part of their education abroad (USA and Europe). All our departments carry out ‘accreditation studies’ that constitute a measurement of standard for their academic quality; information is provided on the web pages of departments that have completed this process. The active involvement of foreign lecturers and students, together with faculty members’ domestic and international projects, enhances the quality and environment of Yeditepe’s vibrant academic life. Another indicator is the success our students enjoy in an array of competitive activities in Turkey and internationally, as well as their record of post-graduate admission to top-rated European and American universities. The medium of instruction at the Faculty of Engineering is English. Students who are not proficient at English first attend the English preparatory program before joining their faculty. Every year 85 percent of students admitted through the university entrance exam are awarded partial or full scholarships. 35 Yeditepe University

The Faculty strives to graduate students who are interested in other aspects of social sciences besides law, who are honest, intellectual and open minded, who believe in the superiority of law, who protect the national interests, and who contribute to the improvement of law. In order to achieve this mission, the curriculum of Yeditepe Law offers English- language law courses in addition to the standard Turkish law courses. English- language law courses offered include International Law, Introduction to Common Law of Contracts, International Commercial Arbitration, US Company Law, Intellectual Property Law and Licensing, Competition Law, Introduction to Common Law of Torts, EU Law and Institutions, and International Business Transactions. Additionally, the curriculum contains a wide range of classes to improve the 40 command of both written and spoken legal English and to develop analytic skills: Legal Terminology, Legal Advocacy and Drafting, Advanced English, and Logical Mathematics. Yeditepe Law believes that the needs of the globalized world require jurists who can easily adopt other foreign legal systems and provide services not only within their country but also in a wide range of legal areas in the world. As the proof of this premise, Yeditepe Law graduates currently work as lawyers in internationally-known big law firms such as White&Case, Baker&McKenzie, DLA Piper, Curtis, PwC etc.; as experts in independent regulatory authorities or international institutions such as the Turkish Competition Authority, Turkish Energy Market Regulatory Authority, and the WTO; and as academics in both Turkey and abroad. Also, our graduates have received LL.M. degrees from top-ranked global universities such as Harvard, Columbia, Standford, Yale, PennState, King’s College, East Anglia, London School of Economics, Heidelberg, Miami, Queen Mary, American University Washington College of Law, and UPenn. Many of our graduates are admitted to the New York Bar after their LL.M studies. In terms of international relations, Yeditepe Law has strict collaboration with various law schools from other countries. For example, in cooperation with American University Washington College of Law, the Turkish and American Law Summer School Program has been held both at Yeditepe and at WCL for 11 years. The EU Law Summer School Program, in which judges of the European Court of Justice and academics of Amsterdam University Law School give lectures at Yeditepe, has been held for 10 years. Loyola University College of Law – New Orleans grants a scholarship for a Yeditepe student for its summer program held in Vienna every year. Additionally, the Pennsylvania State University Dickinson School of Law has held its Introduction to Turkish Law Summer School Program between 2012-2014 at Yeditepe. In fact, Yeditepe Law has a wide range of networks with US and European law schools. Yeditepe Law has agreements with prominent law schools in Europe such as Rotterdam, Utrecht, Groningen, Nijmegen, Brussel, Ghent, Antwerp, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Alcalá, Genova, Konstanz, Heidelberg, Bremen, Salzburg, Augsburg, Paris X-Nanterre, Strasbourg, Jean Monnet, Fribourg, Zürich, Lausanne, Navarra, Madrid, Deusto, Strasbourg, Sheffield Universities, and many others outside of Europe like Houston, Loyola-New Orleans, PennState, American University WCL. There are more than 90 agreements with other universities from 48 countries including Russia, China, and the US. Every year approximately more than 100 students from other countries have been coming to Yeditepe Law within the scope of Erasmus or Exchange Program. As a result of a joint degree program with Loyola University College of Law-New Orleans, a student who completes the master’s program of Yeditepe Law can get a second LL.M. degree from Loyola Law by attending the classes for only one semester. Yeditepe Law also has a tax law joint program with the US-based Thomas Jefferson Law School. 41 In this global world, Yeditepe Law takes into consideration that law is international and has thus organized and hosted many international seminars, conferences, and activities. For example, under the presidency of Prof. Dr. Haluk Kabaalioğlu, Dean of Yeditepe Law, the ELFA-European Law Faculties Association General Assembly Meeting and Conference “Law Faculties at the Crossroads” was held at Yeditepe University Faculty of Law between 16-19 April 2015 with the participation of more than 200 deans of law faculties, law professors, and senior executives as the representatives of 103 universities and professional organizations from 35 countries of the world. FACULTY OF MEDICINE

Yeditepe University Faculty of Medicine began its life in the academic year 1996- 1997, with the first group of students graduating in the 2001-2002 term. 652 students have graduated from the faculty up to now. As of today, including its preparatory classes, it has 562 students enrolled in its programs taught by a total of 159 professors, assistant professors and lecturers, 125 full-time, 34 part-time. Since Yeditepe’s Faculty of Medicine offers an Integrated Educational Program, the first three terms are carried out in the Medical Faculty Building on the 26 August Campus. Clinical education at the Faculty of Medicine is carried out at Yeditepe University Hospital, the Ophthalmic Diseases Training and Research Center and other hospitals or institutions contracted with the Ministry of Health, starting from the fourth term.

The success of Yeditepe University’s team in gaining a wide array of international accreditations and affiliations enables our students to continue their education 44 all over the world if they wish to do so. The language of education in our faculty is English, allowing our academic staff and students to have their say in international platforms and follow international medical literature. It is also essential in terms of creating opportunities for the international exchange of academic staff and students.

The limited number of students enrolled and the low ratio of academicians to students (3.53) enables the students to benefit from a personalized education.

The main objective of the faculty’s program is to train doctors with effective communication and leadership skills, a firm grasp of global health issues, equipped with the necessary skills and approaches to deliver world class healthcare and management services, committed to maintaining the ethical rules and standards of their profession, ready to receive up to date knowledge at the international level, able to think systematically, who are research oriented and possess the intellectual curiosity required for constant self-development, team players who are adept at mastering and using the latest medical science and technologies.

In the Introduction to Clinical Practice (ICP) program students are furnished with the required pre-clinical and introductory skills. Clinical training and education is based on competence; students ‘learn by doing’ as well as mastering theory at the Faculty of Medicine’s Clinical and Occupational Skills Laboratories before they actually take part in on the field clinical training. Our Basic Medical Science and Clinical and Occupational Skills Laboratories with their state-of-the-art 45 Yeditepe University

infrastructure came into operation in 2005. These labs render our faculty highly competitive in terms of undergraduate medical training. We have and continue to enjoy progressively higher success rates in the biannual Examination for Specialty in Medicine (TUS).

Yeditepe University Hospital and its associated institutions were inspected in November 2007 by JCI (Joint Commission International), a prominent institution in its field, and became the first accredited university hospital group. It proved the consistency of its quality in being accredited twice again, in October 2010 and April 2014. In 2011 Yeditepe University Hospital and its associated institutions were deemed worthy of two highly significant certificates in the field of quality and management, the ISO 9001 Quality Management System and 46 14001 Environment Management System. This success was reconfirmed in the First Observation Inspection in 2012.

Our students’ acquisition of practical and applied experience is facilitated by their collaboration with a group of prominent doctors recognized in their field like Prof. Dr. Gazi Yaşargil was honored as «Neurosurgery’s Man of the Century» by the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. These applied training sessions provide students with enhanced occupational skills in the process of becoming a doctor. Lectures and classes are offered by well-known academics and lecturers in their field. In addition to the academic program, academicians from universities and institutions including Cambridge, Oxford, State University of New York, Cleveland Clinic, Imperial College London, Manchester, and Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich, visit our university every year to conduct seminars. 47 Yeditepe University
