NIKOLAOS LIBYAN SEA 1 Saronic & Argolic Gulf / Eastern Peloponnese The Saronic Gulf is the most famous sailing and charter area in Greece due to its proximity to Athens (southwest of Athens). Following the Saronic trail to Aegina, Hydra, Poros and Spetses you can feel the beauty of these picturesque islands. For a quiet destination you can also sail from Aegina to Dokos, an uninhabited place which will offer you unforgettable moments. A second excellent sailing area is the Argolic Gulf from where you can visit the historical cities of Monemvasia and Nafplio –the first capital of Greece, an old city with neoclassic houses- and the ports of Leonidio, Kiparissi and Porto Heli. Saronic Gulf and the eastern Peloponnese are much less affected by the strong winds of the Aegean Sea, usually you don’t even feel the Meltemi wind (north east, around 4 Beaufort). At the east coast of the Peloponnese however some unexpected gusts may occur sometimes from 6 to 7 Beaufort. The Ionian Sea The Ionian Islands - also known in Greece as the 'Eptanisa' (Seven Islands) - are seven main islands located on the western side of mainland Greece. This group of islands includes many smaller islands, but the basic ones are the following: Corfu, Paxoi/Antipaxoi, Lefkas, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Zakynthos (Zante), islands which are off the west coast of Greece in the Ionian Sea. The seventh island, Kythira, is off the southern tip of the Peloponnese, the southern part of the Greek mainland and is included in the region of Attica. Ionian is not the Greece of the popular travel brochure but a shaded green country, sheltering red tiled Latin houses, an eccentric collection of Italian and French architecture and English tastes. The wind and sailing conditions in the Ionian Sea are ideal and predictable. From May to September the wind blows from North-West at Force 2-5. In Spring and Autumn the wind is less strong and blows usually from South-West. It arrives around noon, blows between force 3 to 6 (10 to 25 knots) and dies down at sunset. There may be strong gusts on the leeward side due to the high land (e.g Eastern side of Ithaka and Zakinthos). DESERTMED A project about the deserted islands of the Mediterranean The islands, and all the more so the deserted island, is an extremely poor or weak notion from the point of view of geography. This is to it’s credit. The range of islands has no objective unity, and deserted islands have even less. The deserted island may indeed have extremely poor soil. Deserted, the is- land may be a desert, but not necessarily. The real desert is uninhabited only insofar as it presents no conditions that by rights would make life possible, weather vegetable, animal, or human. On the contrary, the lack of inhabitants on the deserted island is a pure fact due to the circumstance, in other words, the island’s surroundings. The island is what the sea surrounds. What is de- serted is the ocean around it. It is by virtue of circumstance, for other reasons that the principle on which the island depends, that the ships pass in the distance and never come ashore.“ (from: Gilles Deleuze, Desert Island and Other Texts, Semiotext(e),Los Angeles, 2004) DESERTMED A project about the deserted islands of the Mediterranean Desertmed is an ongoing interdisciplina- land use, according to which the islands ry research project. The “blind spots” on can be divided into various groups or the European map serve as its subject typologies —although the distinctions are matter: approximately 300 uninhabited is- fluid. lands in the Mediterranean Sea. A group of artists, architects, writers and theoreti- cians traveled to forty of these often hard to reach islands in search of clues, impar- tially cataloguing information that can be interpreted in multiple ways.
