Following the Saronic trail to Aegina, Hydra, Poros and Spetses you can feel the beauty of these picturesque islands. For a quiet destination you can also sail from Aegina to Dokos, an uninhabited place which will offer you unforgettable moments. A second excellent sailing area is the Argolic Gulf from where you can visit the historical cities of Monemvasia and Nafplio –the first capital of Greece, an old city with neoclassic houses- and the ports of Leonidio, Kiparissi and Porto Heli. Saronic Gulf and the eastern Peloponnese are much less affected by the strong winds of the Aegean Sea, usually you don’t even feel the Meltemi wind (north east, around 4 Beaufort). At the east coast of the Peloponnese however some unexpected gusts may occur sometimes from 6 to 7 Beaufort. The Ionian Sea The Ionian Islands - also known in Greece as the 'Eptanisa' (Seven Islands) - are seven main islands located on the western side of mainland Greece. This group of islands includes many smaller islands, but the basic ones are the following: Corfu, Paxoi/Antipaxoi, Lefkas, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Zakynthos (Zante), islands which are off the west coast of Greece in the Ionian Sea. The seventh island, Kythira, is off the southern tip of the Peloponnese, the southern part of the Greek mainland and is included in the region of Attica. Ionian is not the Greece of the popular travel brochure but a shaded green country, sheltering red tiled Latin houses, an eccentric collection of Italian and French architecture and English tastes. The wind and sailing conditions in the Ionian Sea are ideal and predictable. From May to September the wind blows from North-West at Force 2-5. In Spring and Autumn the wind is less strong and blows usually from South-West. It arrives around noon, blows between force 3 to 6 (10 to 25 knots) and dies down at sunset. There may be strong gusts on the leeward side due to the high land (e.g Eastern side of Ithaka and Zakinthos).
