Quickly establishing her skills through her teens, Sharelle’s first taste of international competition came as part of Australia’s Under 21 team in 1996. From there, she was selected in the 1998 Commonwealth Games squad – the youngest member of the team – and was part of the team that won the gold medal in Kuala Lumpur. In total, Sharelle won two gold and two silver medals across four Commonwealth Games. She carried the flag for Australia at the Delhi Games, was a part of three Netball World Cup teams for two wins and played for Australia 118 times, 12 of those as captain in an international career spanning 14 years. She finished with 2520 international goals at an average of just over 21 per Test. Most famously, she took the final shot in the dying seconds of the gripping 1999 World Netball Cup final, capturing the title for the Diamonds in a heart-stopper against New Zealand.

  • Another "Well-Cut Diamond"
Left: Sharelle McMahon in action with Vixens (Courtesy netballviccomau) Sharelle played a pivotal role in two breath-taking finishes at championship events, and can safely dine out on these alone when she finally hangs up whatever netballers hang up when they retire. She threw the match-winning goal in the dying minutes of the 1999 World Championship gold medal game against the old foe New Zealand in Christchurch; and she also shot the match-winning goal in double overtime at the 2002 Commonwealth Games to seal victory once again against New Zealand. Two heart-stopping victories against the Kiwis in one career would have seemed almost too good to contemplate in her early days. Sharelle is now looking forward to sharing her knowledge with the next generation of athletes. "When I first played, 1 was very young and naive and have since learned so much", she says. "I am excited about sharing my experience with our younger players to ensure the traditions of the Australian Netball Team continue." There is nothing like the cauldron of international competition to sharpen the senses, and Sharelle will undoubtedly bring poise and maturity to her new leadership position, and will be an ideal role model for the next generation of young netballers, including those at Wesley (who, by the way, have won the last two premierships). Her spectacular career has more than demonstrated her mental toughness, her outstanding skill and athleticism, and her reputation for fairness. Wesley is proud to have a connection with this exemplary young Australian. Another "well-cut diamond" And that connection will be maintained in the continuing service to the school of one of Sharelle's earliest mentors: that other "diamond", Marg Molina.
