On the Ball Page 2 New Club Uniform As was announced in the September Issue of ‘On the ball’ the design of our new uniform has been chosen. We wish to confirm ‘Fitting Days’ will be held at the Duncan McKinnon Courts on Saturday 15/11/08 and Saturday 06/12/08 between 9-11:30am. Players need to attend one of these days to ensure a uniform is ordered for the 2009 season. A deposit of $50 is to be paid at the time of the fitting and remaining $50 to be paid at time of collection in February 2009. Dresses will not be provided to players unless full payment has been received at time of col- lection. Sponsorship Opportunity The Club is looking for a sponsor for our new ‘bibs/patches’. If you are aware of a company/store that would be interested in having their business promoted by teams contact Leanne Thomas on 0411 536984. Club Logo Winner Congratulations to Tom Oliver who designed the winning entry for the Club Logo Competition. The CSNC Com- mittee wishes to thank all members who entered the competition. The 12 entries received were considered at the September Committee meeting and the following design by Tom will be used on all our future communica- tion/promotional material. CSNC Family Fun Day The Fundraising Committee is gearing up for the Family Day on Sunday 16th November, 2008. Remember to put this date in diary! The inau- gural ANL competition began on 2 August 2008, and will be an important step in the development pathway to- ward playing at ANZ Championship and international levels. The ANL was held over six weekends plus a finals weekend and each state and territory across the country was represented in the 10-team competition, with teams often playing two or three matches in a weekend. The squad trained together under Carol Byers (Melbourne Vixens Assistant Coach) since January. The Fury trained alongside the Melbourne Vixens and consists of athletes who played with the Melbourne Kestrels and Melbourne Phoenix squads in 2007, or were identified at a national level. The Fury won all their matches to make it to the Grand Final. The Fury won beating the AIS 56-41 to record a perfect 11 wins from 11 matches in the inaugural ANL competition . Australian Netball Diamonds Netball Australia recently launched the new brand for the highly successful national team - the Australian Netball Diamonds . The Diamonds were defeated by New Zealand (Silver Ferns) 31-38 in the second test in Auckland on 20th September, 2008.     SCHOOL SPORT AUSTRALIA 12 & U and 15 & U NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY The championships had their origins in the Australian State Schools' Basketball Association developed originally for primary schools and played predominately on grass. Interstate carnivals commenced in 1923 and continued in 1924 when a number of exchanges between individual states occurred. In 1924 visiting teachers from Victoria, Queensland and South Australia to New South Wales made exhaustive inquiries into the question of girls’ games with the view to inaugurating interstate contests. In 1925 South Australia hosted New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland in both a junior and senior competition, one of the games attracted over 2000 spectators. South Australia was victorious in the junior section and South Australia and Victoria both finished in first place in the senior. This competition continued in 1926 in New South Wales and 1927 in Victoria. With the introduction of a perpetual trophy the first officially recognised Australian State Schoolgirls Basketball (Netball) Championship was played at the Practising School, Brisbane in 1928. The final, on the afternoon of the August 22nd, was before a large crowd. Victoria convincingly beat NSW 23 goals to 4 goals. Mr John Donald Howie donated the perpetual trophy following the win of Victoria. Mr Howie was a Victorian Councillor from 1922 – 1932 and Mayor of Camberwell in 1927 and 1928. Australian schoolgirls tournaments were organised to combine both a netball competition and an educational tour, When girls weren’t playing they attended lessons at the local school or made educational day trips. In Brisbane the girls visited Toowoomba, the Olympic Tyre and Rubber Works in Geebung and took a trip to the South Coast of Queensland.

    Coomera Indoor Sports Netball Centre (CSC) Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (GCE) Sport History Netball Origins and the sport today: Derived from early versions of basketball, netball began in England in the 1890s. By the start of the 20th century, the first set of rules were published and the game’s popularity began to grow as it was played in many British Commonwealth countries. In 1960, representatives from England, Australia, NZ and South Africa established the International Federation of Women’s Basketball and Netball – now known as the International Netball Federation (INF). However, it wasn’t until 1970 that Australia and New Zealand adopted the name netball, as they previously called it women’s basketball. The first World Netball Championship took place in Eastbourne, England, in 1963 and has been played every four years. The tournament was renamed Netball World Cup in 2015. Netball at the Commonwealth Games: Netball is one of 10 core sports at the Commonwealth Games, meaning it has to be included on the program. The other nine are aquatics (diving and swimming), athletics, badminton, boxing, hockey, lawn bowls, rugby sevens, squash and weightlifting. Netball is a women-only sport and first appeared at the Commonwealth Games at Kuala Lumpur 1998. Australia and New Zealand have dominated the dais, with three gold and two gold respectively. England and Jamaica have won bronze medals, but are still to make a final. With the exception of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games final, won by Australia 58-40, the battle for gold between Australia and New Zealand has generally been a close one.
