Imagined Geographies and the Production of Space in Occitània and Northern Catalunya in the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Centuries by Jonathan C. Farr A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (History) in the University of Michigan 2016 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Diane Owen Hughes, Chair Associate Professor Hussein Anwar Fancy Professor Elizabeth L. Sears Professor Paolo Squatriti 1 © Jonathan C. Farr 2016 Acknowledgments The project that would become this dissertation began in a seminar on “Medieval Cities” with my adviser, Diane Owen Hughes, to whom I owe a great debt. Her advice at every stage of my graduate career has been tremendously helpful and her confidence in the project—and in my ideas and their written expression—was unwavering, even when mine was lacking. The other members of my committee also deserve thanks; Hussein Fancy, Paolo Squatriti, and Betsy Sears each provided invaluable feedback and have influenced my research, writing, and teaching (always for the better) over the course of my time at the University of Michigan. I would also like to recognize Peggy McCracken, Ray Van Dam, Christian de Pee, and Katherine French for their encouragement and advice, and Tom Green and Tom Willette for organizing the Premodern Colloquium, where part of this dissertation was workshopped. Portions of my research were presented at the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies, where I was a graduate fellow, and I would especially like to thank Greg Parker there. My fellow graduate students have always been generous both in devoting their time and intellect to reflecting on my project and in giving of their friendship.

2014 Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya Calendar of Exhibitions www.museunacional.cat he programme of exhibitions of the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya for 2014 T is one step more in line with the strategy foreseen for developing the museum’s potential and putting it in its rightful place as a central, unique, outstanding institution. The main event this season will be the new presentation of the permanent collection of modern art on the first floor, which will allow an arrangement in complex narrative form of an itinerary beginning in the late 19th century and leading up to the 1950s. This new permanent presentation will be complemented with a temporary exhibition spanning the period from 1950 to 1977, as a foretaste of the first full account of the whole of this period. The Museu Nacional will therefore be a place of reference for Catalan Modernisme and Noucentisme, the avant-gardes, the 1930s and the Spanish Civil War, among others. The museum will also be presenting the large retrospective exhibition on Joan Colom, following the incorporation of the photographer’s complete archives into its collections, and will recover two figures of a very high quality in Catalan art who deserve the two exhibitions acknowledging their work: the Orientalist from Reus, Josep Tapiró, and the tragic artist Carles Casagemas, a close friend of Picasso’s. The collections of medieval art, though, are still the museum’s chief asset and flagship exhibit. For this reason, in April it will be home to the Romanesque International Conference, the internationally renowned biennial conference on Romanesque art jointly organised with the British Archaeological Association.

INGENIERÍA DE EDIFICACIÓN PROYECTO FINAL DE GRADO ESTUDIO Y LEVANTAMIENTO ARQUITECTÓNICO CON LÁSER ESCÁNER 3D DE LA IGLESIA DE SANT PERE DE RODES Proyectistas: Montells de Bobes, Anna y Rubio de la Torre, Raúl. Directores: Xiqués Triquell, Jordi y Serra Santasusagna, Joan.

PALABRAS CLAVE: Esculturas románicas, Pirineos, patrones geológicos, procesos creativos, liquidez ABSTRACT: The paper’s point of departure is a striking formal similarity between patterns found on rock in the Pyrenees and a widespread sculptural motif. The paper explores several factors that possibly led carvers to transpose a geological pattern into the domain of iconography. Among these factors are the particularities of the Pyrenean landscape, medieval geological speculations on stone formation, theological doctrines, religious metaphors, and the carvers’ experience of their own practice.
