It is our desire to encourage believers to take this passage seriously and to consistently practice the teaching therein. This has been a long neglected passage, and today is completely unacceptable in our feminist environment. We understand the offense of this teaching. But since we take the passage at face value and not as cultural, we have no choice but to practice its teaching. Our desire as elders is to make people aware of what the Bible teaches about this distinctive Christian practice and to encourage both men and women to practice this teaching. If however, people disagree with our interpretation, we do not force this practice on anyone. We respect the liberty of the conscience of all our fellow believers. 1 1 Corinthians 11:2-16 Headship and Subordination Symbolized by Covering and Uncovering of the Head The letter of 1 Corinthians deals with many practical local church issues and problems, ones that affect all churches in all ages.

    ISSN 2002-3898 © Maria Berlova and Nordic Theatre Studies DOI: https://doi.org/10.7146/nts.v26i1.109744 Published with support from Nordic Board for Periodicals in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NOP-HS) Playing King Maria Berlova ABSTRACT The Swedish King Gustav III ruled from 1771 to 1792. His departure to the Russian war in 1788 was staged as a grandiose spectacle. The King, who was also a playwright, made the day of his departure coincide with the symbolic date of June 23. This was the date that Gustav II Adolph (ruled 1611-32) went off to the Thirty Years? War in 1628. The parallel between Gustav III and the great Swedish warrior King was further emphasized by his costume made in the style of Gustav Adolph. In this article, the author analyzes Gustav III?s departure to war as a theatrical event and explores the borders of theatrical events in the late eighteenth century. Gustav III?s ceremonial departure is placed in the framework of Nikolai Evreinov?s and Yuri Lotman?s theories of theatricality which show how the King applied theatrical means to everyday life in order to theatricalize it, i.e. to make it spectacular and symbolic. By theatricalizing life Gustav III idealized his role of king and thus performed his power. Theatricalization of political life not only adorned life but it also significantly changed reality; the theatrical playing of the King entailed real consequences ? Gustav III enacted his role of a monarch in a memorable way and achieved his political goals. The interaction between politics and theater is the main focus of the article.

    Cross-Cultural Head Coverings Historically, head coverings can be found in many cultures throughout the world, including the West. The first records we have of women who wore head coverings are from 13th century BC Assyria. These first instances of head coverings were markers of social standing. Women of nobility began wearing head coverings in order to differentiate themselves from the women of lower social status. Throughout history, head coverings have been worn for various reasons. These include being markers of class or religious beliefs, as well as for practical uses, as social practices, as fashion trends, and as traditional dress. This is a picture of Eastern Orthodox nuns. In Eastern Orthodoxy and in the Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church, a head covering called an epanokamelavkion is used by both nuns and monks, in both cases the covering is a cylindrical hat worn by monks and nuns. Head coverings are often worn for religious reasons. This painting depicts nuns wearing head coverings both formally and informally. A veil forms part of the headdress of some orders of nuns or religious sisters in the Roman Catholic Church.
