  • Foreign Market Entry Modes of Running Events -The Internationalization of Göteborgsvarvet Half Marathon
Foreign Market Entry Modes of Running Events -the internationalization of GöteborgsVarvet Half marathon Jenny Cheng and Hanna Sundell Graduate School Master of Science in International Business and Trade Master Degree Project No. 2011:12 Supervisor: Harald Dolles Abstract Foreign Market Entry Modes of Running Events - The Internationalization of GöteborgsVarvet Half Marathon Jenny Cheng and Hanna Sundell Supervisor: Harald Dolles Sports events are becoming increasingly globally important in social and economic terms. The number of people traveling abroad aiming to participate in those events has strongly increased in recent years. However, in the world‘s largest half marathon - the ‗GöteborgsVarvet‘ - held annually in Gothenburg, Sweden, the rate of foreign participants is still relatively low. Although a wide range of studies have been conducted within sports and event management, the attention towards developing an internationalization strategy for such kind of events is relatively low. The aim of the thesis is to fill this gap, by analyzing the case of GöteborgsVarvet and developing possible foreign market entry modes. The modes discussed in the thesis rank from cooperative forms, e.g. joint venture and marketing alliances, to wholly owned modes, like sales outlets and qualification races. The survey is based on qualitative and quantitative data. The results indicate that, in addition to choosing a foreign market entry mode that fits the specific event, there needs to be a close fit between destination and event in order to be able to attract foreign runners. Furthermore, in order for the internationalization of GöteborgsVarvet to succeed, it requires for the organization of GöteborgsVarvet to truly find or develop motives for it.

SEAFORD STRIDERS NEWSLETTER WE DON’T JUST RUN, WE ALSO HAVE FUN! Editor & Press Officer: Hilary Humphreys [email protected] Facebook: https://en-gb.facebook.com/pages/Seaford-Striders/184950041545372 Website: http://www.seafordstriders.org.uk/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/seafordstriders February 2017 SUSSEX GRAND PRIX by Gareth Hutchinson The Sussex Grand Prix (SGP) is an annual league which provides the running clubs of Sussex the opportunity to compete against each other on an individual and team basis. The categories are further divided by age and sex. The Striders were once regular winners of the overall competition and there now seems an appetite to challenge once again for the top spot. There are usually around 18 races that make up the Grand Prix. Points are awarded according to your finishing position, 1st place earns 500 points, 2nd place 499, and so on. The scoring is separate for males and females. Your points total is obtained from your best 8 scoring races. These 8 races must include at least 2 races of 10 miles or more. Runners' individual points allocation also form the team scores for the club; the top 10 men and 10 ladies (vets top 5 men, top 5 ladies) are counted. Full details can be found on the SGP website http://sussexgrandprix.co.uk/ The clubs that tend to do the best are those with strength and depth across the sexes and age groups. So, don’t worry if you are not up there with the fastest in the club, if you compete in at least 8 races you are still likely to make a significant contribution to the team.

  • Edinburgh Marathon
Edinburgh Marathon The Edinburgh Marathon is the second largest marathon in the UK. It was first held in 1982 and since 2003 it has been held each year in May. It is part of the Edinburgh Marathon Festival. During the festival, runners can also take part in a Half Marathon, a Team Relay, a 10K (kilometre), a 5K, a Junior 5K, 2K or 1.5K as well as a Kid’s Kilometre. A marathon is a long distance running race. The official distance of a marathon is 42.195 kilometres or 26.219 miles. The marathon was one of the original events in the modern Olympic Games of 1896 but the distance was not made the same for every marathon until 1921. Hundreds of marathons are held around the world each year. The majority of runners at these events are not professional athletes. Many marathon runners are raising money by being sponsored to run for a chosen charity. Since 2003, runners taking part in the Edinburgh Marathon Festival have raised over £30 million for hundreds of worthwhile causes. In 2016, 4 274 men and 2 322 women completed the Edinburgh Marathon. Each one received a medal and finisher’s t-shirt to mark their amazing achievement. The Edinburgh Marathon starts in London Road and Regent Road in central Edinburgh. Runners then pass by Holyrood Palace and run through Holyrood Park below Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh’s extinct volcano. The marathon carries on past Meadowbank Sports Stadium, where Commonwealth Games have been held and Scottish athletes have won medals for their running.

Sports Fundraising Market Snapsh t 2018 Mass participation sports events provide an excellent opportunity for charities to recruit, engage and inspire people to fundraise for them. Whilst not all charities have their own mass participation events, the majority utilise third party events delivered by ‘commercial’ providers for fundraising activity. Working with our charity partners and ‘justcharity.org’ we have updated our estimate of the UK’s 25 most important mass participation sporting events for fundraising.
