Chair’s Comments (Martin Lawrence) Well that time again when look back over what has been achieved by Redway Runners over the last 12 months, and every year it is really hard to know where to start, but one of the things that for me is most important are that we have the clubs four principles at the heart of everything that we do and they are:

 Fun  Social  Value for money and  Benefit of the runners

Guess whatever we are doing in the club we must be doing OK, with lots of positive comments and the club is continuing to grow all the time, who would ever have envisaged when we first tried to get 10 people to join us in the venture to start a new running club for Milton Keynes we would find so many people like what we do as a club.

Some numbers:

 1,475 people have started Redway Runners beginners group with 591 in the last club year an amazing number  468 of our club members have joined via our beginners groups  We have ran 47 beginners groups  In the last year we have led 1,146 runs in the club (over 3 runs a day to choose from)

Anyway over the last year the areas I am probably, most pleased with are the new things we have done in the club and the key ones for me are:

 Club clothing shop moved on-line  First Redway Runners Festival of Running  Newport Pagnell Carnival  Club runs – New Sunday/Thursday morning Step Up, Explorer run, Trail Finder and Mondays to Mercedes  Summer of Fun  Charity Football Match  Treasure Hunt run  Support for runners  Virtual run  MK 50 birthday activities, 50 Icons run, club kit  Affiliated with South of England Athletics  Club completed our first year in league one of the cross country and we stayed up

As well as this we have continued to do the things we have done successfully before and grown the club with

 Club trips in the UK and overseas  Club socials  Cross Country, which has really taken off during the last season

Page 3 3 May 2017

 New runs have been introduced  Beginners group have flourished within the club, we held 8 courses and 400 people started running with us  Club events, like Furzton relay and team events, like OU relay  Zero to Hero Programme 2  Charity activity

So what will be new for 2017

 MK50 Celebrations  Treasure Hunt run  Awards and Recognition event  Canal fun run  Socials  Events  Team Events  Zero to Hero re-launch

Anyway, none of what we do would be possible without so many people that help all around the club, I would especially like to thank the club committee, all the run leaders we have everyone who helps out in so many ways and those that just turn up and run – you are who we all do it for. But we do not only achieve so many miles between us we have also left a legacy which includes:

 Between us we raised over £4,142 for Haemophilia Society and if we get this matched again that means over £8,000 raised by the club for our charity of the Year  Helped out with significant resource for a number of events in Milton Keyes, most notably the Milton Keynes Marathon and half in May  Donated a large amount of food and sweets to the Milton Keynes Foodbank at Christmas.

So all in all the last year has been a great running year and next year we will run Milton Keynes again.

Of course do not know how we will develop in the future and if we will continue with the amazing growth we have seen but as long as we all enjoy the journey am sure all the hard work put into the club by so many will be appreciated

Anyway, none of this would have been possible without the support of the committee, the run leads and so many others who give support or help – invariably a request goes out for help and it gets filled very quickly even in areas I expect to be difficult to resolve.

Beginners Groups During the club year we have run 15 courses with 591 beginners, taking them from inactivity to 5k. The graduation in March saw over 100 beginners graduating all buddied by an existing club member, the atmosphere was amazing. All beginners run leads have been working hard on retaining those graduates on the runs and within the club. To that end we have attended training provided by LEAP about retention of members and another one on leadership skills in April.

We have introduced a new course which takes people from the start to 5k over a longer period to provide a service for those that find the traditional beginners course too demanding. This has been very successful.

Using Eventbrite to manage our bookings has made Martin and Annette’s job a lot easier for no additional cost. We have been requesting feedback using Survey Monkey and analysing responses to further improve the courses (thanks to Mike King for managing that process).

We now have more beginner’s leads than ever before, who we will use to provide homework sessions and cover for existing leads. We believe the courses are the best in Milton Keynes, they’re free and are run by the most dedicated of people – we really do run Milton Keynes!

Zero to Hero Programme

2016/2017 programme Out 2017/2018 group have worked through the programme successfully and the group completed each of the milestones along the way.

They should be the time of the AGM have completed the MK Marathon the day before

2017/2018 programme 27 runners have signed up to this the Zero to Hero Programme 2017 - 2018. Applications will remain open until the start of the programme in early June.

Broad technical plans have been completed for presentation to runners and detailed training plans are in near completion.

The programme aims to build on the success of hard work of the last two programmes.

Portia and I intend to structure the programme with a slight alteration to previous years.

We are looking to build on the group dynamic to provide mutual support through the programme. This will hopefully be achieved by creating weekly group run for the initial 6 months of the programme. This will be led by Portia and myself. Within these sessions, we aim to provide firm foundations of running such as running technique, stretching, training techniques in the hope that runners will complete the course. It is hoped that the group dynamic will encourage runners to attend sessions and complete additional homework activities.

Mentors will be introduced later within the programme in an attempt to reduce fatigue within the runner-mentor relationship. Mentors will be introduced in the second half of the programme to provide support in the half-marathon and marathon specific training portion of the programme.

A small number of buddies will be used to support the programme in the early stages providing friendly faces that the runners can feel comfortable with within club runs.

Portia and myself will attend additional club runs to encourage runners into the club running system. This will be initially step up groups with the aim of encouraging runners into the main club and social runs later.

We plan to regularly change the starting points of the group running sessions in the hope of keeping the experience fresh for the runners. This will include trail running activities.

The programme aims to continue to provide milestones along the training plan. The longest being the winter half-marathon and a suitable 15 mile event. The 5k and 10k events will be planned and organised as a group event. Runners will be able to enter additional events as they require. The reduction of the longest run aims to limit injuries caused by fatigue.

A group Facebook page has been set up and the runners have been invited to contribute. We aim to maintain contact with the runners through regular posts such as those provided within the main

Page 15 3 May 2017

Redway Runners Facebook page, again building on the group dynamic. Weekly running plans will also be published so that runners know where they are within the programme.

Website content is being created stating the aims of the programme, providing basic running and nutrition advice in addition to links to other runner support sites will be posted after completion of the current programme. This content will be dynamic throughout the programme and intends to link to other website pages such as Q and A pages.

We have had limited success in mentor applications this year with only around 6 mentors signed up. As the programme intends to introduce these later within the programme, we hope that the positive aspects of the group dynamic will continue to attract mentors in the future as well as the direct approach of current club members later in the programme.

An initial post-parkrun group activity has already taken place to allow runners to meet the group leaders and each other. This was simply a short run and coffee but triggered good group interaction within Facebook.

Prior to the first training session in June, we aim to conduct a formal introduction event at David Lloyd around 22 May. We aim to introduce ourselves to the group and deliver the aims of the programme. We have guest speakers (including Rudi) to talk about aspects such as injury prevention. It is hoped that we could be joined by some run leaders to encourage inclusion into club running sessions.

Cross Country The Chiltern Cross Country League is for athletic & running clubs from the North West Home Counties. The league is made up 14 clubs in division 1 and 23 in division 2. The season started in October 2016 and finished in February 2017 and challenged athletes at 5 venues including Oxford, Luton, Bedford and two locations in Milton Keynes. Redway Runners were promoted to division one in the 2015/2016 season and remain there after another successful season. The club were well represented at all mob matches including the morning after the club Christmas party!! Team results below …

 Redway Runners overall finished 11th  Men’s team overall 10th  Women’s team overall 11th  Seniors overall 9th  Senior men’s team overall 9th  Veteran men’s team overall 9th  Senior women’s team overall 8th  Veteran women’s team overall 5th

We showed fantastic team spirit and support for all our runners and hope to improve our positions next season with another impressive turnout. Sharpen those spikes and embrace the hills and mud!

Club Runs

As the club membership increases we are constantly reviewing the weekly runs we provide to members to ensure we have the right number and mix of runs to suit everyone

This year has seen new runs added to the weekly schedule and a couple of big changes too

 We launched our Sunday ‘Step Up’ run led by Helen Wiggins (and a great band of substitutes while Helen has been marathon training!). This has proved very popular and is a great stepping stone for members wishing to progress to the longer main club run on a Sunday

 Following feedback from members we relocated our Monday evening runs to the Mercedes Training Centre after the trial at Decathlon.  For our step up runners, aside from the Sunday run we have also introduced a Thursday morning run with Debbie which has had some great numbers each week  For our club runners we launched a Monday 6pm social run with Steve, a Monday morning recovery run with Doug and the popular Tuesday evening ‘explorer run’ with Tim  And finally, for the growing number of runners liking to run off road we now offer a monthly Trail finder run with Kevin

We will of course continue to listen to member’s feedback and tweak the run schedule where we feel it’s appropriate

(Jonathan Clements)

Clothing During the year we moved the club shop on-line which has proved very successful meaning orders get processed quicker, we have processed 620 transactions on the PayPal account

During the year we have introduced the padded jacket, new Smooth cool tee and a range of hoodies to mark Milton Keynes 50th birthday celebrations year.

Charity of the Year At the AGM last year we selected Haemophilia Society as the club charity of the year and we have raised money through the year for then with Raffles, Furzton Fun relay and many other items, we are pleased to say we have raised £4,142.99. A cheque for this amount will be presented to the charity soon. Additionally we hope that we can get this amount matched meaning we will have raised in excess of £8,000.

You can see a full list of charities nominated for the club Charity of the year for 2017/2018 at the end of this document

Club Trips Last year we went to Malaga in Spain and Torbay half in June, Isle of Wight in August and Ljubljana in Slovenia in October, all great trips

Page 17 3 May 2017

For this year we have already been to Santa Pola in Spain in January and the second overseas trip is to Lanzarote in December. For UK trips we have Liverpool in May and Manchester in October

Ride High

Ride High is a local charity that helps to transform the lives of Milton Keynes’ most disadvantaged children by teaching them to ride and care for horses. Our aim at Ride High is to transform some of the most isolated and vulnerable children (aged 8-17 years) into happy and confident young people who are positively engaged in the outside world. The children really are in the most desperate of circumstances – some may be in foster care and struggling to cope with everyday life, a young carer for a family member, suicidal or self-harming, victims of abuse or neglect, NEET (Not in Education Employment or Training), living in homes dominated by ill health, alcoholism, drugs or poverty. We work with 80 children every week for a year or longer with the aim of effecting lasting change in their attitude, self- confidence and in their life prospects. We do this through a programme of structured learning which includes learning to ride and care for horses, associated clubroom activities and projects, educational trips, volunteering opportunities and work experience placements. The children develop communication and teamwork, social and literacy skills and improve their confidence and self-esteem to enable them to go out into the world and fully participate.

We would love to be considered as the Redway Runners Charity of the Year and we would be very happy to work closely with you throughout that year. We have a band of volunteers and we like to get our children involved too. Although we are reasonably well known and supported in the community we are keen to build more awareness of our work and you could really help us achieve this. We have one charity place in the this year and it would be great to build a larger (green army) of supporters from RR in 2018! Equally we would love to feature the Redway Runners in our own communications including printed and eNewsletters and on our social media channels. (Helen Dixon)

The Henry Allen Trust

Henry Allen was just two when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 High Risk Neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer that affects nerve tissue.

Despite treatment Henry's condition deteriorated. Henry wanted to come home and his family spent their last days together making memories and talking about Henrys wishes. This included helping other children and families affected by childhood cancer.

The Henry Allen Trust will be about "Henry's family bringing happiness to your family". This will be achieved in a number of ways including:

Providing Treats and Wishes to Create Special Memories for families affected by Childhood Cancer

Providing Support and Advice for Families Battling Childhood Cancer

Improving Processes for Oncology Services Within Hospitals

Please visit the Trust Facebook page and website for more information. (Helen Arscott)

Open Door MK

Open Door MK a charity in MK helping the homeless and vulnerable. This charity is something which has caught my attention because of its high profile within the MK Citizen newspaper. They are officially backing the charity and highlighting the issue of homelessness in MK. I think there would be a good opportunity for the club to work with the local paper to bring some attention and much needed fundraising. (Marcus Cookham)

Milton Keynes Hospital Cancer Services Department

As you may or may not know, I have recently been diagnosed with stage 4 terminal cancer.

During these tough times, I have been treated so well by everyone at Milton Keynes Hospital Cancer Services Department.

As such, I'd like to nominate Milton Keynes Hospital Cancer Services Department as the charity for RR this year. (Mike Webber)

Helen and Douglas House’s

Helen and Douglas House’s mission is to enable young people aged 0-35 with life-shortening conditions to live as well and as fully as possible to the end of their lives. Helen House was the world’s first Children’s Hospice, leading the way in children’s palliative care and Douglas House is still 1 of only 4 hospices in the UK specifically meeting the needs of young people.

Helen & Douglas House provides expert respite and end of life care to Children and Young People between the ages of 0-35 with life limiting illnesses and their families. Children like Helen House patient Jessica Newell who is just 2 years old and has a life-shortening neurological condition called Leigh’s Disease. Respite stays at Helen & Douglas House give parents Keith and Vicky the reassurance of specialist care for Jessica, and also allows them time for themselves – to be ‘just’ mum and dad to Jessica, giving them relief from the pressures of being her carers. They say that, “Knowing that we have the support of Helen & Douglas House takes some of the fear out of our situation, knowing there will be people to talk to and to help us if the worst happens”

When patients visit Helen & Douglas House they can make use of the wonderful sensory rooms, play areas, music therapy rooms and hydrotherapy rooms all supported by expert staff and volunteers. Families can also stay in the accommodation at the houses so they are never far from their loved ones. Each house is supported by a small team of specialist Doctors which sets us apart from other hospices, as well as registered nurses, carers, occupational and play therapists and care team volunteers. Families are also supported by the Sibling support programme and bereavement team on an ongoing basis. Although based in Oxford they care for children & young people from across the region, currently including 11 families from Milton Keynes and they also operate their outreach programme, caring for patients in their own homes, in Milton Keynes.

Why I’m nominating them

I am the local Community Fundraiser for the charity and in my time in my role have become so passionate about the work that they do, I’ve been lucky enough to meet and hear from patients and their families and know just how big of an impact we make to them in their time of need. As a Mum myself I’ve come to realise it could be any of us in this situation with a poorly child and to have this service available is hugely important. With only a very small percentage of their funding coming from the NHS (13%) as a charity they are reliant on fundraising to continue to provide the care and support that they provide and I know that a donation from Redway Runners would make such a big difference. It is my role to support our local fundraisers and as a member of Redway Runners I would be delighted to support the club throughout the year with fundraising ideas, volunteers, attendance at Redway Runners events, promotion of places at our charity running events and promotion of fundraising. There is also the option to arrange supporter tours of the hospice for any members who would like to know more about how the money the club raises will be used. I would welcome the opportunity to tell people more at the AGM. (Emily Orchard)

Willen Hospice

Willen provides a fantastic service to the community - not just admissions for palliative care but also a day hospice for patients and their carers and lovely helpful doctors who we can ring for advice. They rely on donations for the majority of their funding so need all the help they can get.

Thrombosis Uk

WHAT IS THROMBOSIS

Thrombosis is the formation of potentially deadly blood clots. Blood clots can form in the artery (arterial thrombosis) or vein (venous thrombosis). Blood clots in the arteries cause heart attacks and strokes. Blood clots in the veins can lead to death due to breaking off and blocking the blood supply to the lungs

Mind

I struggle with anxiety and depression and after Mind over Marathon I believe it is the ideal time for RR to support a mental health charity like Mind or Heads Together. Running has kept me alive even though 1 am still rubbish at it! Mind have a base in MK.
