    April 7, 2005 Contact: Matthew Levy 215-893-0140 [email protected] Philadelphia Music Project 2005 Grant Recipients Academy of Vocal Arts, $60,000 to support concert versions of Le Portrait de Manon and La Navarraise, two important but rarely performed verismo operas by Jules Massanet. Vocalists will include James Valenti (tenor), Ailyn Perez (soprano), Jennifer G. Hsuing (mezzo-soprano), and Keith Miller (baritone). Performances will take place at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in January 2006. Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, $160,000 over two years to engage the American Composers Orchestra (ACO) in a residency that will bring ACO’s acclaimed Orchestra Underground programs to the Annenberg Center for a series of six new music concerts. Guest artists and organizations participating in the project include Todd Reynolds (violin), Ryuichi Sakamoto (laptop), Bill T. Jones, So Percussion, Pilobolus, and the Ridge Theater. The residency will include educational and outreach activities, as well as a program of works by Philadelphia- area composers. Choral Arts Society of Philadelphia, $30,000 to host Maestro Dale Warland, the former music director and founder of the Dale Warland Singers, as guest conductor for a program of works by Howard Hanson, Rudi Tas, Arvo Pärt, Benjamin Britten, James MacMillan, Frank Ferko, Alexandre Gretchaninoff, Vytautus Miškinis, and Henryk Górecki. Garcia). The music of John Coltrane’s last group—his 1965-67 quintet—has been misrepresented, ignored and reviled by critics, scholars and fans, primarily because it is a music built on a fundamental and very audible disunity that renders a new kind of structural unity. Many of those who study Coltrane’s music have thus far attempted to approach all elements in his last works comparatively, using harmonic and melodic models as is customary regarding more conventional jazz structures. This approach is incomplete and misleading, given the music’s conceptual underpinnings. The present study is meant to provide an analytical model with which listeners and scholars might come to terms with this music’s more radical elements. I use Coltrane’s own observations concerning his final music, Jonathan Kramer’s temporal perception theory, and Evan Parker’s perspectives on atomism and laminarity in mid 1960s British improvised music to analyze and contextualize the symbiotically related temporal disunity and resultant structural unity that typify Coltrane’s 1965-67 works.

    Discography of the Mainstream Label Mainstream was founded in 1964 by Bob Shad, and in its early history reissued material from Commodore Records and Time Records in addition to some new jazz material. The label released Big Brother & the Holding Company's first material in 1967, as well as The Amboy Dukes' first albums, whose guitarist, Ted Nugent, would become a successful solo artist in the 1970s. Shad died in 1985, and his daughter, Tamara Shad, licensed its back catalogue for reissues.     LAURA NYRO’S ELI AND THE THIRTEENTH CONFESSION: TRANSCENDING THE DICHOTOMIES OF THE WOODSTOCK YEARS Andy Arleo Université de Nantes (CRINI) As Wavy Gravy says, if you can remember the sixties, you weren't really there (Van Ronk 141) Introduction1 As a member of the so-called Woodstock Generation, I am aware of the potential pitfalls of writing about this period. As Dave Van Ronk points out in his quote from Merry Prankster Wavy Gravy (Hugh Romney), memories of those times tend to be hazy. On the other hand, research on memory has shown that there is a “reminiscence bump,” that is “people tend to remember disproportionately more events from the period between their adolescence and early adulthood” (Foster 64). In any case, it is clear that memory, whether it is individual and collective, reconstructs past experience, and that my own experience of the era has inevitably flavored the content of this article, making it impossible to aspire completely to the traditional ideals of scholarly distance and detachment. Future generations of cultural analysts will no doubt reassess the Woodstock Years through different lenses. The name “Laura Nyro” may not ring a bell for many readers, as it did not for many of my students, colleagues and friends whom I have informally surveyed. This is understandable since, unlike other singer-songwriter icons of the period (e.g., Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor), Nyro was never really in the mainstream, although her songs have often been covered by a broad spectrum of singers and bands in a remarkable variety of musical styles, sometimes achieving a fair amount of commercial success.

Sans doute, encore, est-ce le fait de changer de label, passant de RCA à EMI. Sans doute, enfin, que la nationalité même du groupe fut un rempart contre le Punk qui a dévasté les plus grands noms de l’époque. Les conseils du producteur Dieter DIERKS expliquent également certainement le succès fulgurant remporté par ce cinquième album studio des SCORPIONS. Tout autant que la pochette (signée par l’avant-gardiste Hipgnosis) qui, une nouvelle fois (après celle fort décriée et aujourd’hui introuvable de Virgin Killer) fait jaser.

Throughout 1983 and 1984, the band toured across North America releasing their self-titled debut album in June, 1984. The album went Platinum and featured four hit singles: “New Girl Now,” “Burning In Love,” “Wave Babies” and “Stay In The Light.” Their second album, The Big Prize was released in February, 1986 … it also went Platinum and featured four hit singles: “Feel It Again,” “What Does It Take,” “All Along You Knew” and “Bad Attitude” which was featured on the series finale of NBC’s “Miami Vice.” That same year, they won a Juno Award for “Group of the Year.” In 1987, they released their third album, Racing After Midnight … a slightly harder-edged, more guitar- oriented album that spawned a European tour with Status Quo and a headlining tour across Canada. A best-of compilation album was then released in 1989 followed a year later with Monsters Under The Bed which featured the singles, “Say You Don’t Know Me” and “The Road.” In 2001, the band released their first studio album in eleven years, Lemon Tongue. Last year, original members Ray Coburn, Dave Betts and Gary Lalonde returned to the band and just last month, they released their latest album, Clifton Hill. In the late 60s, the punkish Vancouver band "Seeds of Time" formed the basis for what would eventually become Prism.
