BIRDSWOOD BOAT TRIP

The Wharf, Mill Lane, Cromford, DE4 3RQ

Birdswood is the historical narrow boat belonging to The Friends of Cromford Canal. The boat and our gift shop are run entirely by our dedicated team of volunteers. Birdswood runs scheduled trips throughout the year, open to members of the public. Come and enjoy a peaceful journey along the Cromford Canal and get up close to the fabulous wildlife and take in the amazing scenery.

OFFER DETAILS:

The morning trip leaves promptly at 11:00 am. Passengers are advised to be on the wharf no later than 10.45am. Boarding closes 5 minutes before departure for passenger safety notice and welcome

The afternoon trip leaves promptly at 2:00 pm. Passengers are advised to be on the wharf no later than 1.45pm. Boarding closes 5 minutes before departure for passenger safety notice and welcome

Parking is charged for either on the wharf or at the Rugby ground next door.

Dogs are welcome (with well-behaved passenger!).

Disabled access is (regrettably) limited. Being a heritage boat, Birdswood is not adaptable.

Hot & cold drinks are available to buy on board and there is a toilet on board (for emergencies, as there are facilities on the wharf.)

The trip is approximately 2hrs (an hour out & an hour back) with historic commentary.

DENBY POTTERY VILLAGE

Established in 1809, it all began when an expansive seam of clay was found at Denby during the building of a turnpike road from Alfreton to Derby. Denby's products have constantly evolved to meet the changing needs in the home. Early products were salt glazed bottles and jars through to ceramic hot water bottles and kitchenware leading to the beautiful and versatile tableware of today which is exported to over 40 countries. Although the products made at this world famous pottery have changed throughout the decades they all carry the quality for which Denby is renowned.

Denby Pottery Village welcomes visitors every day to its Visitor Centre next to the Pottery where it all began. Go behind the scenes in our working pottery and watch our skilled crafts people creating your favourite Denby pieces with skills used for over 200 years. Throw a Pot: There are 14 x 20 minute taster sessions throughout the day with our Craft Potter which will give one adult or child* at a time the chance to experience creating a piece of pottery on a Potter's Wheel. After creating your clay pot you can take it home. *child must be over 6 years old and 3' 6"tall to fit on a wheel)

Timings: First session commences at 10 am and the last session commences at 3.20 pm. Taster sessions last for approximately 20 minutes.

Paint a Plate: There are sessions throughout the day for 2 adults or children to paint a plate. Once you are happy with your design, the plates will then be fired in our kiln and you will need to return to collect your plate a week or so later. Plates can be sent by mail if preferred for the cost of postage.

ECCLESBOURNE VALLEY RAILWAY

Ecclesbourne Valley Railway is a heritage railway station that serves the town of Wirksworth in Derbyshire. It was the former terminus of the Midland Railway Wirksworth branch line, leaving the Midland Main Line at Duffield. The line was reopened as the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway

OFFER DETAILS: A FREE RETURN JOURNEY on a 1950's heritage diesel train. The journey must start at Wirksworth Station and passengers can alight at Duffield Station. Train waits for 20 mins. Total return journey time is 1.5 hours. FREE CAR PARK at Wirksworth Station. Extras such as refreshments and shop purchases are chargeable. Train times are 11:15am, 13:20pm, 15:15pm. HOPE HOUSE COSTUME MUSEUM

Hope House Museum, Alstonefield, Nr. Ashbourne, Derbyshire, DE6 2GE.

Notty Hornblower began accumulating her incredible collection of costume in her thirties, having had a fascination with history and clothes since a small girl. Her collection grew, and after just three years Notty had assembled over a hundred costumes, not to mention a substantial amount of shoes and accessories.

Hope House Costume Museum has now been running for 21 years and Notty has been collecting costumes and textiles for over 40 years. As a result of this avid collecting the Museum now boasts a large collection of period clothing from the late eighteenth century up to the 1970s, and includes women's, men's and children’s outfits, military uniforms, wedding dresses, shoes and accessories.

MELBOURNE HALL GARDENS

Spend a leisurely afternoon exploring the Garden at Melbourne Hall. With its broad sweeps of lawn, avenues and unexpected vistas, it is one of the best known historic gardens in the country and is the best surviving early 18th century English garden in the manner of Le Nôtre. The crowning feature of the garden is the wrought iron arbour known as ‘The Birdcage’ which was made by the celebrated ironsmith Robert Bakewell in 1706-8. In addition this year you can visit the Animal Magic area and meet some of the animals in residence including pygmy goats, pigs, rare breed Portland sheep, alpacas, ponies, rabbits, guinea pigs and ducks.

STRUTT’S NORTH MILL MUSEUM

Strutt’s North Mill is a former cotton spinning mill and one of the most important buildings within the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site where the factory system was born and where waterpower was harnessed for textile manufacture in ‘the valley that changed the world’.

Come and join our informative, friendly guides as they take you around our museum and tell you how Jedediah Strutt helped to introduce mechanised cotton spinning to the Derwent Valley, how his ingenious son William built the North Mill, with its ground breaking metal framed, fire proof construction and how the Strutt family transformed Belper into the world’s first cotton mill town.

How to find us:

By car: On the A6 between Derby and Matlock at the junction of the A6 and the A517 to Ashbourne - follow the road signs to the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site and then the brown road signs to Strutt’s North Mill

By bus: Trent Barton’s ‘Sixes’ run to Belper. The 6.1 route between Derby and Bakewell passes our door (alight at Bridgefoot) and the Trans Peak service (to ) stops on the A6 by the East Mill and the Belper River Gardens

By train: Belper is served by the Trains between Newark Castle, Nottingham, Derby and Matlock. These operate on a 2-hourly service (Sunday timetable) to Belper. The mill is a short walking distance from the station.

An exclusive guided tour of the Weleda gardens including free refreshments and free hand massages.

The tour begins at 1.30, so please arrive in time. The walk around the gardens takes approximately 1.5 hours and afterwards refreshments will be provided and you can also take advantage of the free hand massages on offer using Weleda products. Visitors must leave by 5.00pm.

There is free car parking on site. No dogs allowed. Please dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear (walking boots or wellies).

The garden is a large site of 12 acres with uneven grass paths and potentially muddy if it has been raining. It is not wheelchair accessible and can be a challenging site for visitors with mobility issues.
