However, Alexander the Great is almost 8 always portrayed in modern depictions as heterosexual, and the disappearance of his 9 life-partner Hephaestion is all but complete in ancient literature. Five full primary 10 source biographies of Alexander have survived from antiquity, making it possible to 11 observe the way scholars, popular writers and filmmakers from the Victorian era 12 forward have interpreted this evidence. This research borrows an approach from 13 gender studies, using the phenomenon of bisexual erasure to contribute a new 14 understanding for missing information regarding the relationship between Alexander 15 and his life-partner Hephaestion. In Greek and Macedonian society, pederasty was the 16 norm, and boys and men did not have relations with others of the same age because 17 there was almost always a financial and power difference. Hephaestion was taller and 18 more handsome than Alexander, so it might have appeared that he held the power in 19 their relationship. The hypothesis put forward here suggests that writers have erased 20 the sexual partnership between Alexander and Hephaestion because their relationship 21 did not fit the norm of acceptable pederasty as practiced in Greek and Macedonian 22 culture or was no longer socially acceptable in the Roman contexts of the ancient 23 historians. Ancient biographers may have conducted censorship to conceal any 24 implication of femininity or submissiveness in this relationship.

    GROWTH AND TURMOIL, 1948-1977 Cold War Beginnings Resource: Life Story: Christine Jorgensen (1926-1989) Christine Jorgensen was born on May 30, 1926, in the Bronx, New York. She was assigned male at birth, but always felt like a girl. She wanted to wear girls’ clothes and play with girls’ toys. As a teenager, she developed crushes on boys and struggled to understand her own feelings. After she graduated from high school in 1945, Christine was drafted by the U.S. Army. Christine served as a military clerical worker for a year. After World War II ended, Christine pursued a career in photography. In her free time, she read about medical procedures to help people who felt that their gender or sexual identity did not align with society’s expectations. In 1950, she traveled to Denmark for a series of surgeries and hormone treatments that transformed her body into that of a woman. The process took nearly two years. She chose the name Christine in honor of her surgeon, Dr. Christian Hamburger. Christine intended for her transition to remain private. However, an unidentified person who knew about the procedures she had contacted the press. On December 1, 1952, the New York Daily News published photographs of Christine before and after her transition with the headline “Ex-GI Becomes Blonde Beauty: Operations Transform Bronx Youth.” Within days, Christine Jorgensen was both a national and international celebrity. When she returned to the United States in 1953, Christine arranged with the press to make her arrival a public spectacle. Hundreds of reporters greeted her at the airport in New York City.

    modelsofpride.org | 1 WELCOME TO THE 25TH ANNUAL MODELS OF PRIDE CONFERENCE! 25 years ago, this conference was started by a small group of visionaries who believed LGBTQ youth needed a safe, supportive place to connect with each other and be inspired by role models who had gone before them. The first conference, sponsored by a commission of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Commission on LGBT Rights, was held in 1993 at Occidental College, with about 60 youth in attendance. Today, we expect over 1,500 youth at Models of Pride and over 350 participants in the Parent and Professional Institute. We have much to celebrate. As we gather today in our opening session, we will celebrate the people who had the vision to start this conference, those who put in the time, energy and work to take an idea and make it a reality. And we will honor the two women who are credited with taking that original idea and keeping it going for the following 17 years – Virginia Uribe and Gail Rolf. Our hope for our time together is that each of you would be inspired by these visionary leaders to take the ideas, dreams and visions you have and put in the work to make them a reality. Our conference theme is: Together We Rise. We chose this theme because, in the midst of the daunting and scary political times we are living in, we want to acknowledge that, as a community, we are strong and powerful and resilient. Then, on Feb. 7, Jenner was involved in a car accident in Malibu, California, and the attention became frenzied. TMZ noted that, despite the incident, Jenner’s reality TV series was still going ahead as planned. TMZ had been reporting on the incident to the point of a pathological obsession—posting photos and videos of the wrecked cars involved while People magazine carried a blow-by-blow account of the accident declaring that Jenner was given a breathalyzer test.
