modelsofpride.org | 1 WELCOME TO THE 25TH ANNUAL MODELS OF PRIDE CONFERENCE! 25 years ago, this conference was started by a small group of visionaries who believed LGBTQ youth needed a safe, supportive place to connect with each other and be inspired by role models who had gone before them. The first conference, sponsored by a commission of the Unified School District’s Commission on LGBT Rights, was held in 1993 at Occidental College, with about 60 youth in attendance. Today, we expect over 1,500 youth at Models of Pride and over 350 participants in the Parent and Professional Institute. We have much to celebrate. As we gather today in our opening session, we will celebrate the people who had the vision to start this conference, those who put in the time, energy and work to take an idea and make it a reality. And we will honor the two women who are credited with taking that original idea and keeping it going for the following 17 years – Virginia Uribe and Gail Rolf. Our hope for our time together is that each of you would be inspired by these visionary leaders to take the ideas, dreams and visions you have and put in the work to make them a reality. Our conference theme is: Together We Rise. We chose this theme because, in the midst of the daunting and scary political times we are living in, we want to acknowledge that, as a community, we are strong and powerful and resilient. Our community has overcome tremendous challenges, and, if we work together, we will triumph and rise above Ready to talk? our current adversaries and obstacles. 18 | lifeworksla.org modelsofpride.org | 19 CONGRATULATIONS TO THIS YEAR’S ROLF/URIBE MODELS OF PRIDE LEADERSHIP AWARD WINNERS

Youth Honorees Santee Education Complex Gay-Straight Alliance Club

Last March, the GSA leaders of Santee Education Complex won their campaign to get the first multi-stall all-gender bathroom in Los Angeles Unified School District. Their campaign involved a school-wide peti- tion, presentations to school administrators, presentations in classes, thoughtful student-led research, a rally, and unplanned counter-protest against homo/transphobic protesters to advance the call for a multi- stall gender neutral bathroom. The campaign and the leadership of the GSA leaders shows the power of a bold and unapologetic vision for trans + queer justice and the genius of youth imagination.

Adult Honoree Gizella Czene

Gizella has supported the LGBTQ community for many, many years, working especially hard to support the Latino Trans* community and Spanish-speaking families. Some of Gizella’s affiliations include PFLAG Español SoCal, Somos Familia Valle, Grupo de Apoyo para Familias LGBTQ, Latino Equality Alliance, Mi Centro, The Los Angeles LGBT Center, and others. Gizella has also been a part of Models of Pride for many years, growing the conference’s Parent & professional Institute (PPI), and ensuring a place for Spanish-speakers throughout the day. Gizella’s work serves as a constant reminder that, while struggles may persist in the Los Angeles community for LGBTQ people, loving support can be found in many people & places.

The Rolf/Uribe Models of Pride Leadership Award is given annually to youth and adults who have been models of pride to the LGBTQ com- munity, showing extraordinary leadership and dedication to the rights of all people to live as full and equal members of society. The Los Angeles LGBT Center’s LifeWorks program thanks you for your accom- plishments and contributions. You inspire us all!
