PORT MELBOURNE 14.5 (89) Port Melbourne entered the Semi Final on a high after a strong win against Collingwood while Williamstown squandered numerous chances with poor ball use against Box Hill Hawks in a Qualifying Final. What appeared to make the Seagulls prospects even more daunting was that Western Bulldogs put in ‘cotton wool’ several players – Lachlan Hunter and Jarred Grant - that were eligible to play in the VFL fi nals. And, Port Melbourne was hosting the match at the North Port Oval, which has been fortress-like during coach ’ reign. Veteran Daniel Cross, one of four players dumped by the Western Bulldogs earlier in the week, did not to play. To the credit of Lukas Markovic and Patrick Veszpremi, other players axed by the Bulldogs, they both honored their commitment and made solid contributions to Williamstown’s massive win. Against such a backdrop, Williamstown jumped a lethargic Port Melbourne from the get go and it was apparent very early that the Borough’s season was over. Williamstown, with Jason Tutt, Veszpremi, Anthony Anastasio and Ben Casley combining for 15 goals, made Port Melbourne look inept. While Casey won plenty of the ball its delivery, by both hand and foot, put it under pressure when they had the chance to apply scoreboard pressure. Werribee was able to break open the match with a six to two goal third quarter and left Casey staring at another inevitable end to the season. Casey forward Tim Smith kicked four of the Scorpions goals, but he like full forward Tom Gillies had no impact as the Werribee defence led by Scott Clouson and Sam Wormald shut down the Scorpions’ scoring. Once again 2012 Liston Trophy winner Ben Ross showed his class and he generated so much drive from half back and his use of the ball set up repeated scoring opportunities. Ross’ season has been on an upward spiral since the fi nals started and with Jarred Moore providing all the blue-collar work at the stoppages, Werribee’s key players again had a telling say in the result. Former Sydney Swan Brett Meredith was another key contributor. Meredith’s ability to rack up possessions and use them to advantage was pivotal. Young North Melbourne ruckman Daniel Currie

Lourey may have beaten him out for a spot in the VFL Team of the Year, Galea owns the honor as the 2013 ‘Frosty’ Miller Medalist. Galea’s total of 55 goals during the home and away season is the lowest winning tally since Bob Bonnet kicked 44 goals in 1963. While some of his teammates may say he’s always one for melodrama, Galea still needed to kick two goals in the last quarter against Coburg to tie the Dolphin’s sharp-shooter. Galea made the task even harder for himself when he missed a set shot from throwing range early in the last quarter. But thanks to his teammates, who were well aware of how many goals he needed, the Port Melbourne No 5 not only drew level with Lourey, but with less than 10 minutes to play he slotted through the sealer. Galea said the ‘Frosty’ Miller Medal seemed more in the minds of his teammates than him. He said he had been the butt of jokes about defending his title during the week leading up to the Coburg match. He added that it was the support of his teammates not only this season, but throughout his time with the Borough that had helped him kick 253 goals in his 74 games for the club.

“I was just wanting to get through the game given I was just coming back injury, especially with the week after being the start of the fi nals,” Galea said. “When I had four or fi ve goals, the boys really started looking for me and once I got to fi ve goals it (the ‘Frosty’ Miller medal) started to come to mind. If the boys don’t get it down to me I don’t kick the goals. “I got a goal in the goal square and somehow managed to miss that and that would have equaled (Michael) Lourey.” “I got the last two (goals) on leads. I think the last one was about 45, 50 metres out. “It was good to win it in the end.” Galea said he believed his form became more consistent towards the end of the season and that helped propel him into ‘Frosty’ Miller contention. He said to win a second goal kicking title is something he will look back fondly when his time with Port Melbourne is over. But, Galea said he could only marvel at the achievement of Sautner who won a record nine goal kicking titles from 1999-2009. “To be put up with Saunter is something, he was outstanding. To win it nine times is just remarkable,” Galea said. “I was lucky enough to play against him a few times.” FROSTY MILLER While he obviously didn’t play when Smith and Aziz were playing, Galea can recall watching Aziz and reading about MEDALLIST Smith and was impressed how Smith was the last player DEAN GALEA before to kick 100 goals in a season. AGE: 28 “For me to win two ‘Frosty Millers’ is great.” he said.
