VFLR: If they choose to enter the VFL, do they receive any financial assistance from AFL Victoria? PS: No, it would be self-funded.

VFLR: How do assess Gold Coast’s entry to the TAC Cup this season? PS: It’s worked well; they are a very competitive team. They have obviously got talent and they are virtually a full-time under-18 team – they get a lot more training and preparation than our other TAC Cup teams. As for the travel factor, our Victorian teams have enjoyed the experience.

VFLR: With Gold Coast coming into the AFL, is there a view that AFL clubs will look more to mature-age players in the VFL as prospective draftees? The thing is that we are all young, so I don’t see myself as the youngest captain in the VFL. I’m an average age for my club,” Carnell said. Carnell, a member of the leadership group for the previous two seasons, was appointed when last year’s captain Paul Shelton moved on. He noted the only difference between him and other members of the leadership group was that he got to toss the coin before the match. What Carnell and for that matter Coburg Tigers’ fans, are wrestling with is how wildly fluctuating the club’s form has been this season, especially with the glut of experienced Richmond players named on any given week. After Port Melbourne inflicted a heavy defeat in the round 10 split Skipper’s sights fixture, Carnell said much soul searching was done, with a more basic approach considered the set on top four best way forward. “We just decided to strip it Nick Carnell says Coburg’s season to be all back and not get ahead of defined over the next month of football. ourselves. Given his status – Winterton this weekend becomes just the third Frankston player to reach the 150-game mark – he hopes the gossip will remain just that. For Winterton, Frankston has become a second home over the past nine seasons. He’s been part of the club’s finals campaigns, played alongside some club greats like Daniel Clarke, , Ash Roberts, Shane Burgmann, Adrian Little, Nicholas Sautner, Justin Berry, Shaun Pollard and Michael Ablett, and earned the respect of his teammates and peers. As former coach Brett Lovett once noted: “He plays with such passion that it inspires everyone around him.” Winterton views his 150th match as an honour, and a milestone he’s immensely proud Winterton reaches to have achieved. “Not too many get to play that many VFL games these deserved milestone days; it’s more of a young man’s competition,” Winterton said. While Barlow may not be the quickest player, he makes up for that with great endurance. Barlow, along with Michael Rockefeller and a host of rookies, has been the upside of an otherwise disappointing start to the season for Werribee.
