PRESIDENT’S REPORT On behalf of your Board I take pleasure in presenting my report to members. Our on field performances certainly failed to reach the level of success which we all craved in 2009 and significant changes have been made in our Football Department. In our December Newsletter I outlined the process which took place in not re-contracting Brad Gotch and the appointment of . I again extend my personal appreciation and the appreciation of the Williamstown Football Club to Brad Gotch, for his 8 years as Senior Coach of the Club. However, I am excited about the qualities Peter German will introduce into our Club. I am also excited about the prospects of an improved on-field performance for Season 2010. Williamstown won a second consecutive Gary Gilchrist Trophy in 2009 but undoubtedly our club wants to taste premiership success. The VFL competition continues to evolve with all clubs struggling to recruit key ex-AFL players with local, country and interstate clubs offering bigger cash incentives. The best news for our competition was the recent National and Rookie Drafts which saw 10 players selected from VFL clubs. This is a result of players like and being recruited as mature aged rookies and having success at AFL level in 2009. Undoubtedly the introduction of new AFL franchises Gold Coast and Greater Western will see more players drafted from VFL Clubs. A great many individuals volunteer their time and services to support our Club and I would like to extend the appreciation of the Board to all those who have committed their time and energies in the past season. Each contribution, no matter how big or small, is greatly appreciated and serves to make our Club the great and popular Club which it is. Sponsorship is a key focus of our Club every season and I am pleased to see significant growth throughout 2009. I would like to thank Joanne Royston from Hocking Stuart Real Estate – Williamstown who have now completed 2 years of a 3 year commitment as our Major Sponsor. The club is currently in discussions with Joanne to extend our partnership for a further 3 year period (2011 – 2013). The Westpac Bank joined Williamstown as our Major Community Partner in a lucrative 3 year partnership (2009 – 2011) and I thank Michael McCormick (Regional General Manager – Western Suburbs) and his staff for their ongoing support. I also welcome Zaparas Lawyers who have joined the Club as our Shorts Sponsor for the next three years (2010 – 2012). It is pleasing as President that we have long term contracts with Hocking Stuart – Williamstown, Westpac Bank, Zaparas Lawyers, KFC, Buffalo Sports, Werribee Nissan, Burbank Homes, Star News Group and Empire Trade. The willingness and ability of our members to utilise our Sponsors is critical for the ongoing success of our Club and the success of any partnership with our Sponsors must be a win / win for both parties. I therefore extol all members and supporters of the Williamstown Football Club when doing any business at all, no matter how big or small, to look to our sponsors before considering any other organisation. The sponsors’ support of our Club is critical and we in turn must be actively supporting our sponsors. I thank the Gulls Supporters Group who continue to raise significant funds for our Club and Judi Jeremiah and her loyal band of helpers for their dedicated efforts. I also thank Rex and Janet Dooley and their volunteers who raise thousands of dollars from canteen sales throughout the season. Our redevelopment at Burbank Oval continues to progress with your Board continuing to work with Hobson’s Bay City Council to overcome every obstacle in our attempt to achieve an elite facility which we will all be very proud of when completed. The partnership between your Club and Hobson’s Bay Council in respect of the development is an entirely unique relationship and nowhere else in has such an exciting concept developed. Upon its completion, the benefits to the population of the western suburbs will be unsurpassed in what the final

development will offer all citizens of the west. We again reiterate how grateful we are to the State government for its contribution of $3 million and Hobson’s Bay City Council’s contribution of $2 million. It is also pleasing to see the continued development of facilities at Crofts Reserve with the Williamstown Football Club providing significant funding for this project. Burbank Homes have been outstanding in their dedicated commitment to this project which should result in the Western Jets having an outstanding training facility. Your Board is thrilled with the way our alignment with the Western Bulldogs continues to evolve and I would like to especially thank Western Bulldogs President David Smorgon, CEO Campbell Rose and Coach .

It is also very pleasing to see the continued growth and success of the Williamstown Juniors Football Club. We continue to work closely with their President Tom Jarosz and his committee and to see large numbers playing our great game is very encouraging for the suburb of Williamstown. Also it is very encouraging to see local Amateur club Williamstown CYMS again win the premiership double and earn promotion to a higher grade. Congratulations to Peter “Spider” Welsh for his dedicated group of workers and Coach Alan “Hoopy” Elliot and his players. I would like to thank Dave Francis and his staff at Seagulls Nest which continues to operate successfully and is a great financial benefit to our club. The State Government announced during 2008 huge changes to the Gaming Industry with the end of the duopoly system of TABCORP and Tattersalls in 2012. A new bidding process to purchase gaming machines will take place in April / May 2010 and your Board is gaining as much information as possible so that we will be well positioned when this new system in introduced. Your Board commissioned 2 consultants and we enter the Bidding Auction with a degree of confidence where we can purchase gaming entitlements at the current market rate. The Williamstown Football Club is indebted to Football C.E.O Peter Schwab, his staff and Football Victoria Directors for their continuing support of our club and their ongoing advice and assistance. In closing I would like to thank my fellow Directors who have guided your club with integrity and passion. Our Board works harmoniously to achieve the best possible outcomes for Williamstown both on and off the ground. Another important aspect is the partners of those heavily involved with the club. The support mechanism they provide is critical to everyone involved from Board, Coaching, Playing and Volunteers. I would also like to thank our General Manager Brendan Curry for his ongoing commitment and work ethic and Nicole Hopkinson (Marketing Manager) for her efforts in her first season in this role. I am excited about the 2010 season with what we can achieve both on and off field and I invite all members, supporters and sponsors to support our club. Trevor Monti (President)

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

The 2009 season saw our senior side qualify in second spot at the end of the home and away series and earn a home final before consecutive finals losses resulted in us failing to make a preliminary final for the first time in 4 years. This result was very disappointing to all concerned and pre-empted a review of our football operations. As a result, long serving Senior Coach Brad Gotch was informed that his contract would not be renewed after 8 years which included coaching our Premiership in 2003. Brad Gotch did an outstanding job over 8 years and I personally thank him for his contribution to the Williamstown F.C Our Reserves side also qualified in second position at the end of the home and away series but lost a cut throat Preliminary Final to exit the Premiership race. Saade Ghazi, Doug Barwick and Andrew Gibson decided not to continue coaching in 2010 and I thank all of them for their efforts during their time at Williamstown. The Williamstown Board in conjunction with the Western Bulldogs appointed the highly credentialed Peter German as Senior Coach for the next 2 seasons (2010 – 2011). Football Director Ian Rickman and myself have appointed a brand new coaching staff to steer our Club in 2010 – Adam Potter (Reserves / Development Coach), David Bourke (Defensive Coach), Ross Fisher (Midfield Coach), Cory Laforgia, Darren Caddy, Shane Murphy and Todd Clark (Assistants). Our second year of being aligned with the Western Bulldogs saw 11.05 Bulldog players represent our Senior side and 6.58 in our Reserves side. An agreement to extend our current alignment contract for a further three years (2011 – 2013) will be signed off shortly. A highlight of our alignment was the outstanding success of our 2008 Gerry Callahan Medallist Liam Picken after being selected as a Rookie and then proceeding to play 23 out of a possible 25 AFL games and playing all 3 AFL finals. In December Patrick Rose was selected as a Rookie by the Bulldogs and we hope that Patrick can establish himself as an AFL player during 2010. The composition of our playing list has been reviewed with a number of players not offered contracts in 2010, also others moving on after significant careers at the Club eg. Tom Langlands and Scott Meyer and others deciding to move interstate eg. Xavier Gotch and Dylan Joyce. The recruitment of a new batch of youngsters from TAC Cup clubs is exciting and we believe we have an emerging group of youngsters who can establish themselves as potential long term senior players. In this Annual Report we highlight the many people who are part of our Support Staff and give their time to ensure that we can field two sides in the VFL. Your ongoing support is critical and I thank you for your efforts throughout 2009 and look forward to 2010. I commend Sophia Samartzis our Head Trainer who co-ordinates all of our Medical Staff for training and match days. In 2009 we were again very fortunate to have the services of Richard Vucinic as Club Doctor and in conjunction with Physiotherapists Ali Vasey, Alicia Tang and Adam Walters. Williamstown now boast the most professional medical staff in the competition. Adam and Ali have been our Club Physios for 10 years and both have informed the Club that they are unable to continue in 2010. I thank them both for their outstanding contribution. Our Room / Property staff headed by Ronny Johnson and ably assisted by The Count, Max, Ian, and Gary Howell were outstanding. Special mention to Graeme Crocker who is a tireless worker at Willi 12 months of the year with both the Football and Cricket Clubs and also runs the bar for the Superules every Thursday night. Thanks to Terry Maloney who continues in his role as Team Manager for both the Senior and Reserve sides.

John Clifton continues to be an outstanding contributor at Williamstown and in 2009 was again at the forefront by running our bar and overseeing all of the President Luncheons and home games. In 2009 the club received outstanding contributions from both the Gulls Supporters Group and our Canteen. Burbank Oval hosts games for Williamstown, Western Jets, Superules and conduct Auskick and Rex and Janet Dooley work tirelessly with their band of loyal volunteers. Likewise Judi Jeremiah heads up the Gulls Supporters Group who continue to raise significant money for the club. The Williamstown Football Club continues to sponsor the Western Region Football League in their Junior Section and in 2007 signed a 5 year deal to continue this arrangement. This $30,000 commitment will see the Junior Finals played at Williamstown’s Burbank Oval and all junior footballs used within the competition will carry the Williamstown logo. Trevor Monti’s President Luncheons continue to be a showcase event at every home game. Again in 2009 we had the honour of quality guest speakers and I am sure everyone who attended had a great time. It is our aim to maintain the level of excellence in 2010 and I urge all members to again support these functions. It is important for all members to understand that even though we are very fortunate to have a strong performing gaming venue, it is imperative that other key fundraising events like the annual auction, golf day , membership and sponsorship is maintained and hopefully increased. The Williamstown Football Club continues to strengthen its existing relationship with our key partners – Victorian Football League, Williamstown Cricket Club, Western Jets Football Club, Footscray District Superules, Western Region Football League and the City of Hobson Bay Council. Williamstown Football Club sees itself as a key player in the local community and we are determined to reach out and promote ourselves as much as possible. Your Board delivers 2010 Family Membership Passes to every Primary School student in the Western Region, every Auskick attendee and local football clubs. Throughout 2009 Williamstown was able to strengthen its financial position and increase funds in our Building Fund. Our Finance Committee headed by Graeme Kennedy and involving Andrew Howlett and Mike Harwood continues to work diligently to oversee our finances and ensure that we maintain all of our current income streams. I would like to thank Nicole Hopkinson in her first year as Marketing Manager who did an outstanding job. Nicole endeared herself to all sponsors and people involved with the Club through her professional approach and her cheery and friendly personality. My thanks are extended to the full time staff of the Western Jets – Shane Sexton, Graeme Prett, Steve Turner and Brad Budge who we share Administration facilities with at Caroline Springs and the Club moved its Admin from Caroline Springs to the 1 st floor 1 Mason Street, Newport in October last year which will now be our permanent base. Williamstown continues to enjoy a tremendous association with the Footscray District Superules who plan to field 3 sides in 2010 and I thank President Bruce Chaplin, Peter Brown, Dave Marshall, Larry Simmons and their Executive Committee. The Footscray District Superules have established themselves as one of the strongest club’s in their competition and they are also planning to be a key contributor to the redevelopment at Burbank Oval. 2010 promises to be an exciting year on and off the ground with high expectations on the field and our refurbishment off the ground. The VFL competition continues to grow and improve and we must adapt and work towards becoming the best club possible. In closing I would like to personally thank all sections of the club for the support they afford me and I look forward to exciting times in 2010.

To Trevor Monti and his fellow Board of Directors I thank you for your support, guidance, trust and friendship in 2009 and look forward to successfully working together and achieving on and off field success in 2010.

Brendan Curry (General Manager)

TREASURER’S REPORT

The Williamstown Football Club has recorded another pleasing trading result over the past year recording an operating profit of $416,959. The major contributors to this great result were again the gaming operations of Seagulls Nest, the on-going revenue stream generated under the terms of the sale of the Caroline Springs licenses to the Collingwood Football Club, interest derived from invested funds and, of course, our great sponsors.

With the change in the format of the gaming industry in 2012, the Board has been diligent in assessing the best options for the club in going forward. Our future gaming machine entitlements will be sorted out early in the new year and the Board is confident that we will be in a very competitive position to maximize our future revenues.

The Club at year end had just on $2.6 million in operating and term deposit accounts with a significant portion of that to be dedicated to the impending grandstand renovations. In the interim, the interest derived from these investments (at the currently relatively low rates) amounted to some $120,000 over the past year due to constant monitoring of best available rates with the support of Westpac.

The sponsorship component of our annual revenues is still continuing to grow and it is appropriate that we acknowledge the contributions and commitment of our major sponsors in Hocking Stuart (Williamstown) and Westpac as well as welcoming Zaparas Lawyers who have just come on board as a major sponsor with the Club. Many thanks to all of our sponsors for their continued backing of the Williamstown Football Club and we request that our members commit to giving them reciprocal patronage wherever possible.

The alignment with the Western Bulldogs continues to be a success both on and off the field and we look forward to a continued growth in our game attendances as a consequence of the success of both the Williamstown and Western Bulldogs Football Clubs.

The Finance Committee and the Board acknowledges the excellent work undertaken by our Bar and Canteen staff and the Gulls Coterie group who have all again made significant contributions to the finances of the Club.

A Statement of Sources and Application of Funds is attached to this report summarizing the outcome of trading operations by the Williamstown Football Club for the year ended 31 October 2009. Members who may wish to examine the final audited accounts will be able to examine a copy at the Club when these have been signed off and finalized by the Auditors.

In closing I would like to thank my fellow members of the Finance Committee – Andrew Howlett, Mike Harwood and Brendan Curry for their efforts and support during the year.
