Since April, 2003, the town of Shimizu has charged for the collection of garbage, and with the cooperation of its residents has promoted the separation and effective utilization of recyclable materials. As of April, 2019, the Shimizu office of waste management joined the Tokachi Area Complex Administrative Association and will jointly process all materials at the Kuririn Center in Obihiro. Please take note that some of the prior sorting and loading methods have changed. Furthermore, by reducing the amount of burnable and unburnable garbage, we will simultaneously create a sustainable environment while promoting the “less garbage = eco-friendly” lifestyle. Tips for an eco-friendly living have also been included, so please use them! ● Overview of recycling and disposal methods CLASSIFICATION Classification Types Example Products Burnable items Wooden products, miscellaneous paper, Burnable ① Feminine hygiene products, cat litter, pet waste, underwear, (COST: designated bag) Fish bones, shellfish, meat, produce, food waste unburnable items Glass items, tin foil, leather goods, rubber goods, etc. Unburnable ② Unrecyclable items Dirty or crushed cans, unrecyclable containers (COST: designated bag) Plastic items Dirty or crushed plastic items, NON marked items Hazardous or Dangerous Items with hazardous substances Fluorescent lightbulbs, batteries ③ (FREE: clear bag) Things that may cause injury Razors, knifes, scissors, etc. ④ Empty cans Tin, aluminum, and steel cans ⑤ Glass containers Glass bottles, jars, and containers ⑥ PET bottles Bottles with the mark ⑦ Paper packaging Items with the mark ⑧ Plastic packaging Plastic containers or packaging with the mark Recyclable Materials ⑨ Paper cartons Milk, orange juice, and other paper cartons (FREE: clear bag) ⑩ cardboard Cardboard boxes ⑪ Newspapers and pamphlets Newspapers, pamphlets, and flyers ⑫ Magazines Magazines, books, catalogs, toilet paper tubes, notebooks ⑬ Cooking oil Tempura oil, bacon grease. ⑭ Metal products Spray cans, pots, pans, tea kettles, container lids, etc. ⑮ Small electric appliances Electric kettle, phones, rice cookers, camera, game consoles, etc. Recyclable at the town office ⑯ Used clothing All clothing and outerwear (excluding underwear), pet products Large scale items Furniture (sofa, table, chairs, beds, dresser, bookshelves, etc.), Large Scale ⑰ Items that cannot fit into a designated flooring, carpet, drying racks, coat racks, sports equipment (COST: designated label) recycling bag.
