Foley Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature Stony Brook University 2014 Théophile Gautier, Gustave Flaubert, and George Gissing deploy tropes of bored readers and writers and dilatory narrative structures in order to register their ambivalence toward the shift from sponsorship of the arts to a literary marketplace. In contrast to popular eighteenth- and nineteenth-century conceptions of the mood as sign of bad character, intellectual deficiency, or elitism, my chosen novelists posit boredom as a site from which to assess and critique their roles in culture. I begin with the problem of boredom's possibility in a literary text: boredom must be dispelled a priori for writing and reading to take place, making it the writer's duty to solicit his reader and the reader's duty to be solicitous. Gautier's epistolary Mademoiselle de Maupin neglects both duties, however: the writer, d'Albert, writes only his boredom, while the reader who would alleviate it, the titular Mademoiselle, breaks the bonds of her own boredom and exits the novel in search of a livelier story. Her departure topples the anticipatory structure erected by d'Albert's letters, and recapitulates the move in French romanticism from an emphasis on mood iii to the popular romantic mode adopted by a growing number of non-traditional commercial writers, of whom Mademoiselle is emblematic. My second chapter discusses Flaubert's writing practice in relation to boredom's movements of withdrawal, stasis, and eventual reengagement. Madame Bovary's experiment with language as dead, malleable object reflects Flaubert's belief that boredom had made of him "a phantom that thinks." I then trace Flaubert's reemergence from phantomhood throughout Bouvard et Pécuchet, a work that parrots contemporary discourse. My final chapter asserts George Gissing's indelible place in British realism, as his work recreates the tones and textures of middle-class experience, particularly the experience of boredom as fostered by mass culture. New Grub Street's and In the Year of Jubilee's characters' boredom marks them as sympathetic, as crucially sensitive to and critical of their environment. Gissing Edited by Pierre Coustillas and Xavier Pétremand In our introduction to “George Gissing and War,” which was printed in the January 1992 number of this journal, we mentioned the existence of two other unpublished essays by Alfred Gissing, “Frederic Harrison and George Gissing” and “London Homes and Haunts of George Gissing.” The three of them were doubtless written in the 1930s when he lived with his sole surviving aunt Ellen at Croft Cottage. Alfred did not date these essays, but they all carry his address of the period – Barbon, Westmorland, via Carnforth. Although they were less ambitious pieces than the articles he published in the National Review in August 1929 and January 1937, they were doubtless intended for publication; yet there is no evidence available that their author tried to find them a home in magazines such as T.P.’s Weekly or John o’ London’s Weekly, which sought to offer cultural entertainment and information to a public that cared for literature and any easily digestible comment on writers’ lives and works.

Edwin Reardon, writer and self-declared part of a class of “casual wage-earners,” sells books and furniture to second-hand dealers to supplement his earnings.1 Major and minor characters often feel the pang of hunger: Reardon spends time in “semi-starvation,” Biffen is described as a man of “excessive meagreness [that] would all but have qualified him to enter an exhibition in the capacity of living skeleton,” a “hunger-bitten clerk” is seen scribbling job applications, and an unemployed surgeon, Victor, begs for coffee and food at Camden Town Railway Station.2 Much attention has been paid to how New Grub Street represents the failures and successes of late-Victorian

    Sympathy for the Devil: or, When was the ending of A Life’s Morning rewritten? Graham Law George Gissing (1857-1903) and James Payn (1830-98) found themselves on opposite sides of the literary divide opening between “Realism” and “Romance” in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, and not only because they belonged to different generations. In Gissing criticism, Payn, in his role as both commissioning reader for Smith, Elder and Co., the publishers that issued the bulk of Gissing’s books up until New Grub Street (1891), and as literary editor of their monthly miscellany, The Cornhill Magazine, often stands accused of acting as a grave hindrance to his superior in the art of fiction. Though there are other specific complaints, generally concerning the meanness of the terms offered for publication rights,1 the most damning charge against Payn has always been that he rudely forced Gissing to rewrite the closing chapters of A Life’s Morning (1888) to bring about a happy ending. The central character in this novel is the brilliant Oxford student Wifrid Athel, who falls in love with Emily Hood, a governess from an impoverished family in industrial Yorkshire. Though Emily responds, the suicide of her father leads her to renounce her love; after a lengthy interval Wifrid offers his hand to an old family friend, the glamorous Beatrice Redwing. The accusation against the editor is that he compelled the author to conclude the narrative not with Emily’s death but rather with her union with Wilfrid. This charge has recently been restated with considerable vigour among the “Notes on composition and publication” in the entry on the novel in Pierre Coustillas’s Definitive Bibliography.

    Opticon1826 , Issue 7, Autumn 2009 THE PLACE OF BLOOMSBURY IN THE NOVELS OF GEORGE GISSING By Professor Richard Dennis The Victorian novelist, George Gissing, is not often associated with Bloomsbury. Yet among his twenty-three novels published between 1880 and 1905, at least nine contain scenes set in the area between Oxford Street and Euston Road, Tottenham Court Road and Gray’s Inn Road.1 We do not need a novelist to tell us about the topography of Victorian London or even to describe the conditions in which Londoners lived: there are more than enough social surveys, tourist guides and journalistic ‘explorations’ of ‘how the poor live’. But novels are invaluable in showing how the spaces of the city were perceived and used and how the city was ‘performed’ in everyday practice. So in this paper I am interested in how Gissing made use of the area’s geography and how his characters moved through Bloomsbury and the wider metropolis at a variety of scales. My starting point is Henri Lefebvre’s discourse on The Production of Space and his conceptual triad of ‘spatial practices’, ‘representations of space’ and ‘representational spaces’ (Lefebvre 1991). In the readings of most commentators, ‘representation of space’ is a conceptual act undertaken by planners, politicians, academic theorists and novelists – in other words, the discourse of the powerful, telling us how we should think about the organization of space – whereas ‘representational spaces’ are the spaces of resistance, of carnival, of subversion, the appropriation of space by the powerless or, more generally, ‘spaces that are lived, experienced and recoded through the actions of those who occupy and use them’ (Elden 2009, 590).

    Living in an (Im)material World: Consuming Exhausted Narratives in New Grub Street By Emma C. Eisenberg Honors Thesis in English Oberlin College April 20, 2015 Eisenberg 2 “We need a moratorium on essays about the death of literature,” said an LA Times columnist in spring 2015. An ambitious proposition, especially if that moratorium extended to all essays on death: the death of newspapers, of books, and even of iconographic Facebook, whose fall from popularity we declare semi-regularly. These deaths have yet to occur, but we live in their anticipation. We even rhetorically enact them, in deference to a tacit law which discards the past as a “useless encumbrance” of outmoded styles of consumption (Ulin, Lasch xviii). But is that encumbrance necessarily useless? In this paper, I argue that George Gissing’s New Grub Street (1891), which narrates the deaths of two realist novelists and has been called an “epitaph for Victorian fiction,” lives out its own virtual death to good purpose (Taft 379).1 This work can convert its formal problems to critical utility because, though it is possible to locate a form’s “moment of inevitable decline” in popular usage, its absolute end is difficult and perhaps impossible to find (Ibid). In New Grub Street, Gissing uses this exhaustion to direct attention to an even more dead-end social form: consumer society. The realist novel’s transitional state, he alleges, conserves social possibilities that newer vehicles of consumption might discard. This is not, then, just the realist novel rising up like Banquo’s ghost to point out its killer.

In all of these, with the exception of The Nether World, he focuses on different aspects of the downtrodden intellectual’s plight. For example, in Isabel Clarendon (1886), he describes the intellectual isolation of the “unclassed” idealist Bernard Kingcote and his love for an upper-class country lady. In Demos (1886), Gissing contrasts the socially-deposed intellectual, Hubert Eldon, with the working-class socialist, Richard Mutimer, who has inherited property that should have gone to Eldon. Although the loss of the inheritance forestalls Eldon’s hopes of marrying into middle-class respectability, in opposition to Mutimer and his socialist scheme, he is seen in a superior light, simply because of Mutimer’s working-class origins. Even when Mutimer sets up a co-operative mining community, the aesthetic idealist Eldon views this humanitarian enterprise with Schopenhauerian scorn because of Mutimer’s indiscriminate spoliation of nature.

To mark this centenary, it has been thought appropriate to reprint some of the poems of the Wakefield chemist and botanist, which very few among those interested in his son will have had an opportunity to read. They were composed in the early eighteen-fifties and are reproduced here from Margaret and Other Poems by An East Anglian (London, Simpkin, Marsha1l, and Co., 1855).
