Ÿ Help us as a school to be good neighbours to the local residents in our area. Presently Bryon Drive and Kingley Close, both off Sandhurst Road, are becoming very congested throughout the day. Local residents are becoming increasingly frustrated and concerned about access to their own driveways. In the mornings parents are dropping off, in the evenings they are waiting to collect and during the day parking on these roads has increased considerably. We have spoken to our Sixth Form regarding the quality of parking and the need to ensure that access to driveways are left clear. The police are aware of this situation and are monitoring the parking in these areas each day.

Ÿ Can you ensure that your child wears a cycle helmet if they ride their bike to school? Furthermore, could I ask you to talk to them about the importance of cycling safely on the roads, as last week we understand three boys shot across Grant Road without looking causing a very dangerous situation. We don’t want anybody being hurt when travelling to and from school.

PLEASE CAN YOU NOT…

Ÿ Give students any tablets or medicines to take themselves during the school day. All medication must be handed in to and administered by our School Nurse. Could parents/carers also please ensure that students are aware that they should never take any medication that has been prescribed to someone else.

Messages for Parents from Simon Bowden – Local Police Commander,

As we approach warmer and hopefully dryer evenings, Thames Valley Police has an important message for parents who don’t appreciate the risks of giving their children alcohol or leaving their children alone with alcohol - even beer: Being a parent brings tough responsibilities these days, the best choice is the one that keeps your child safe. Giving your underage child alcohol to drink with friends is not only hugely irresponsible but also unlawful. Children under 18 years age should not be taking alcohol out to parks or buying alcohol from pubs or off licences. The health risks and the risks they put themselves in when under the influence do not bear thinking about.

A recently published report on underage drinking titled 'Under the Influence' is a really interesting read for responsible parents that are keen to ensure a healthy lifestyle for their children in later life. Read it hear http://www.demos.co.uk/projects/under- the-influence. It investigates how far parenting style affects children's drinking behaviour in later life. Their research shows that parenting style is one of the most statistically reliable influences on a child’s drinking patterns in adolescence and adulthood: Tough love – parenting which combines affection with firm boundaries – results in children being less likely to have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol in later life.

Police and Community Support Officers patrol parks and open spaces during summer months as part of Operation Lyon Cub, Young people found drinking or in possession of alcohol will be dealt with firmly and parents will be contacted to collect them, either from the location or the police station following arrest. Full details of underage drinkers will be maintained and depending on the circumstances further partnership interventions with Children's Social Care may be considered.

The Bracknell Forest Community Safety Partnership will continue to carry out test purchasing checks and follow up where necessary to ensure all premises are acting as they should be to control antisocial behaviour and underage drinking and action will be taken where premises sell to underage customers.

I hope that as responsible parents, you will join me in keeping Anti-Social Behaviour off our streets and parks over the summer.

Disneyland trip 2012 German Exchange Trip 2012

We all had a great time in Disney last weekend. Although suffering from lack of sleep, we’re still trying to get over the excitement of Disney. On Friday, we all got on our coach at 8:00 and started our 13 hour long journey to Disney. Even on the coach, we could ‘taste the magic’ as Marcus said. We even made up our own Disney song, much to the amusement of all the teachers. We got up early on Saturday and got to the Disney studios first. Many of us dared to go on the ‘Tower of Terror’ where we dropped 13 floors! There was also the ‘Rocking Roller Coaster’ which many people went on. Then after lunch, we went to the Disneyland park. The ‘Space Mountain’ ride was definitely the most popular, with some people going on it 5 or 6 L times! The haunted house was also very disturbing Some of this year’s Year 9 students took part in the German exchange in June. As my last ever year group I will always have fond memories of the class of 2007-2012. They have been a fantastic group of young people, who have risen to any challenge I have given them. They have been the ‘quiet achievers’ no fuss, no bother, just hard working, talented and supportive.

The Leavers Assembly was a lovely occasion and an emotional time for both the pupils and myself. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for you very kind thoughts, words and gifts. The Prom was brilliant and everyone without exception looked stunning and I do hope it was an evening for them to remember.

The academic, individual, musical and sporting success that the year group have achieved would not have been possible without the constant support and guidance given by their tutors, Mrs Petri, Miss McNaughton, Mr Drosdzowski, Mr Moist, Mr Smith, Mrs Gascoigne and Mr Lucas. They have given time, been there to listen, helped when things were not going well but above all taken an interest in each and every one of their tutees.

I would especially like to thank Mr Moist, who has been my deputy this year, for all his hard work and help. It has been a delight and privilege to have worked with the year group. They have been amazing and I am very proud and lucky to have been their Head of Year.

I look forward to celebrating your successes on results day in August and wish every success and happiness to all the pupils and their families. AUSCHWITZ VISIT - APRIL 2012

As many of you are aware, on Friday the 8th June members of the England football team visited the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz.

Although in itself not a conventional visit for a football team, its significance is notable as a wider message to those who revere footballers as role models in their sport and representatives of our country.

In April of this year, we as students of Edgbarrow School were also given the invaluable opportunity to visit the camp with the Holocaust Education Trust. We too, like the squad, saw the horrors that sparked from racism and the blind ignorance of those who simply let it pass.

In Auschwitz itself a quote is displayed - one that truly emulates why both these visits are so important. It states that “the one who does not remember history is bound to live through it again.” (George Santayana)

The team’s visit unfortunately coincides with current issues surrounding racism within the sport and consequently paints a solemn reminder of what cannot be forgotten. The squad along with their managers are setting an example in visiting the site – racism in any form should not be tolerated. The location of the death camp in Poland is even more poignant when looked at in the light of the Ukrainian football supporters’ racist behavior as broadcast on the BBC’s Panorama.

Further work, like that of the Holocaust Trust, gives us and other student’s similar opportunities to learn from the past. We learnt of the individual impact to those held at the camps; the importance of each person, each belonging and each picture to those involved; and, consequently, the individual response of each student that this evoked.

It is said that at Auschwitz there are no birds. That time stands still. We found that this is not true – birds fly over as they have always done; time inevitably moves on. What these visits do is remind us that despite the march of time, we must learn from the past in order to relay its teachings to the present. ‘Grace Lawes - Yr 13’

After endless minutes on the inflatable insanity assault course we decided to go on the other assault course on the other side of the park. Josh, Josh, Nathan and Matt all went on it. Everyone apart from Matt got over the first obstacle cleanly whereas Matt face planted onto the blue mat and tried to catch up with his teammates. Everyone watched on in laughter. Next up on the assault course were Harry, Armand, Elliot and Matt S and the surprise of the day was when Armand front-flipped over the first obstacle with style.

World Challenge

A group of 15 students from Years 11, 12 and 13, plus Mr Newbould and Mr Croxon will be going on a World Challenge Expedition to Nepal in July. The expedition will last 4 weeks and the group will be arriving in Kathmandu for a few days ‘ acclimatisation, followed by a couple of weeks trekking through the Langtang District in the foothills of the Himalayas. The highest point on the trek reaches an altitude of 4773m so it will definitely be a real ‘challenge’ as the company name suggests. They will be camping for most of the time, but some nights will be spent staying in local ‘Tea Houses’. After the trekking phase the team will be spending a week working in a school near Kathmandu, which will give them the opportunity to learn about the local people’s lives and share in their culture. The last few days will be spent visiting Chitwan National Park to experience the rare wildlife that lives in the park, before flying home on August 10th.

Music Concert 2012

A big well done to all those performers who took part in the music concert at the end of June! What a fantastic night. We were treated to exceptional performances from Year 7 singer Josie Doyle and Year 7 dancers Fiona Knight and Rosie Brennan. Isobel McIntyre represented Year 8 with a beautiful rendition of Beyonce’s version of Ave Maria and Rosie Clarke showed off her Jazz Skills with a stunning performance on the piano! Big thanks to all performers who came together to rehearse ‘We are Young’ and we were especially proud of all the Year 7 performers who took part in their first music concert here at Edgbarrow. We were wowed by the professionalism of the Year 10 GCSE and Performing Arts groups performing their coursework pieces, running the front of house, tech and back stage areas. A special mention for Edgbarrow’s very own Ant and Dec, Max Brannon and Eoghain Kilbane who hosted the entire concert. Year 11 returned and performed some of their composing coursework and students from the Sixth Form, Rachel Foster, Ejen Acebis and Jesse Castillo from Year 12, performed as well as Sophie Austin who returned to end the concert with one of her grade 8 singing pieces.

Sadly, we say goodbye to several students leaving the swing band this year as well as Sophie Austin and Mike Holden who are leaving for very prestigious universities to follow courses in Acting and Musical Theatre. We send all those students with our very best wishes and luck for the future. A final thanks to Mr Evans and Mrs Evens who following a very busy night, and along with Mr Moist and Mrs Light, took the swing band on tour to Spain the next day! Wishing all a fantastic summer break! Ms Spencer LIBRARY NEWS

With the generous assistance of the PTA the Library has recently purchased and installed a new computer system, Oliver. This new system will allow us to provide a better service to all Library users, and in the longer term allow students to check their outstanding loans and make searches of the library catalogue..

As you may already know the 2012 Carnegie Medal (awarded annually by librarians to the writer of an outstanding book for children) has been awarded to A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. For the first time in the award’s history the same book was also awarded the sister prize the Kate Greenaway Medal for illustration. This is a challenging read for young adults which the chair of the Carnegie judges described as “an exquisite piece of writing”. A copy will be arriving in the Library shortly.
