Although they look somewhat similar to terrestrial grasses (Figure 1.1), they are not related to this group of plants, but evolved from freshwater macrophytes about 100 million years ago (den Hartog 1970, Les et al. 1997). The 12 genera of seagrass species belong to four different families: Zosteraceae, Posidoniaceae, Cymodoceae, and Hydrocharitaceae, forming an ecological rather than a taxonomical group (den Hartog and Kuo 2006). Like terrestrial grass species, seagrasses can form extensive meadows in shallow coastal waters all over the world (Green and Short 2003). The depth limit of seagrasses is determined by the water clarity, as they need light for photosynthesis, and the seagrass species Posidonia oceanica can be found up to 50 m depth in the clearest parts of the Mediterranean (Duarte 1991). Carney 1 ABSTRACT Westerners have long viewed mangroves as forbidding, pestilential landscapes. While modern medicine transformed their deadly reputation, the perception lingered of an environment that was little more than a tropical wasteland. The 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro profoundly changed this view by drawing attention to the ecosystem as a habitat crucial to the life cycles of many species and endangered fauna yet increasingly at risk from deforestation. Conservation initiatives in the years since the Rio Summit, however, seldom recognize mangroves as a habitat that has also long supported human life. This is evident in the shell middens found along mangrove coasts and in the historical record of shellfish harvested for dietary protein. With a focus on Brazil, this article examines the shellfish that sustained Amerindians, enslaved Africans, and their descendants along the mangal coast since pre- Columbian times. The discussion contends that Brazil‟s mangrove forests cannot be separated from the history of the tropical peoples who have successively lived in and managed this ecosystem from ancient times to the present. Finally, the article concludes that a research focus on shellfish suggests broader linkages to South Atlantic history. Charlotte Lloyd will present the Cancellarioidea, the Nutmeg snails, a fascinating group with an unusual spectrum of shell morphology. As a special treat, there will be two shells-of-the-month: Littorina Irrorata, the Marsh Periwinkle, presented by Mary Reynolds, and a "neighbor snail" to be discussed by Brian Marshall. Barbara Cathey and Laura Rowley will host the annual Christmas party to be held at Barbara and George Cathey's home. The date is Saturday December 12. Information is provided below.
