We report upon the amphibians collected during seven expeditions carried out between the years 2000–2006 to thirteen localities in both Refugio de Vida Silvestre Río San Juan and Reserva Biológica Indio-Maíz, southeastern Nicaragua. We include morphometric data of around one-half of the adult specimens in the collection, and provide a brief general overview and discuss zoogeographic and conservation considerations of the amphibians known to occur in the Río San Juan area. The mountainous region of central Veracruz, Mexico, is considered a priority area for amphibian conservation because of its high level of ende- mism and the number of threatened species. The Craugastor punctariolus species series of direct developing frogs is endemic to the region and used to be comprised of 33 species, seven of which have known populations at present. One of these, Craugastor ranoides, endemic to southern Nicaragua and Costa Rica, was historically found in cloud forest sites of Área de Conservación Guanacaste (ACG) in north-west Costa Rica and extended into dry forest sites 20 km distant. -

The list com- prises 133 species (24 amphibians, 109 reptiles), representing 27 families (9 amphibians, 18 reptiles) and 65 genera (16 amphibians, 49 reptiles). Coahuila has a high richness of lizards in the genus Sceloporus. Coahuila has relatively few state endemics, but has several regional endemics. Overlap in the herpetofauna of Coahuila and bordering states is fairly extensive. Of the 132 species of native amphibians and reptiles, eight are listed as Vulnerable, six as Near Threatened, and six as Endangered in the IUCN Red List. In the SEMARNAT listing, 19 species are Subject to Special Protection, 26 are Threatened, and three are in Danger of Extinction. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract We describe a new genus of New World direct-developing frog (Terrarana) from the northern Andes of Venezuela and adjacent Colombia. Tachiramantis gen. nov. includes three species formerly placed in the large genus Pristimantis. Mo- lecular phylogenetic analysis of data from five nuclear and mitochondrial genes shows that Tachiramantis is not part of Pristimantis or any other named genus in its family (Craugastoridae or Strabomantidae). Morphological evidence further supports the distinctiveness of Tachiramantis, which has several aspects of skull morphology that are rare or absent in Pristimantis and synapomorphic for Tachiramantis, including frontoparietal-prootic fusion and degree of vomer develop- ment. The terminal phalanges, which narrow greatly before expanding at the tips, may represent an additional morpholog- ical synapomorphy.
