Film - Television - Internet - Video - CD-ROM 79 APPENDIX B: The Bayonet Articles of Charles Dangré 80 6 INTRODUCTION to the 2005 SUPPLEMENT The present author first produced “A Bibliography of the Bayonet” in January 2000. (It is currently out of print.) Since that time, much additional material has been published and a number of pre-2000 references have come to light which were not included in the original Bibliography. It therefore seems appropriate to publish a Supplementary Bibliography at this point in time, exactly five years on from the appearance of the original volume. The period 2000-2005 has seen the publication of some 30 new books on the history of the bayonet, or on bayonet identification. Some authors have chosen to produce general works on world bayonets, resulting in the appearance of pioneering volumes in the Russian language and a continuation of the controversial series by the French author J.-P. Vial. Others have concentrated on narrower fields of study, publishing books on, for example, plug bayonets, Kalashnikov rifle bayonets, German etched-blade 'Dress Bayonets' or British spike bayonets. A major three-volume series has been produced in Poland on the bayonets of that country, and the identification of German service bayonets has been particularly well covered. It has proved possible to obtain details of many more military bayonet fighting or training manuals, adding to a seemingly endless and bewildering series of instructional booklets. Such publications are here sub-divided into manuals exclusively concerned with the bayonet, followed by listings of more general training manuals which contain chapters or sections on the bayonet. Manuals are listed nation by nation within each of these two catagories. A steady stream of magazine and journal articles has continued to be produced, with the two specialised serial publications, the Journal of the Society of American Bayonet Collectors and the Journal de l'Association Française des Collectionneurs de Baïonnettes, proving to be particularly rich sources of interesting material. The widespread availability of digital technology has resulted in some researchers choosing to disseminate their work through the medium of CD-ROM's rather than conventional printed books. Significant studies of Turkish bayonets and United States Bayonet Patents have for example been produced by such means in recent years. Appendix A covers material of this kind. The articles by Charles Dangré, the Director of the Musée Royale de l'Armée in Brussels, published in the Museum's journal entitled `Carnet de la Fourragère ' during the years 1924 to 1931 have long been recognised as a seminal study in bayonet identification, and particularly important to the study of German `Ersatz' models of the First World War. The titles, subject matter and numbering of these articles are somewhat confusing to say the least, so a complete listing of Dangré's work is included here as Appendix B. 7 PART 1 - BOOKS ON THE BAYONET PART 1A) Histories and Collectors' Guides on Bayonet Identification Subject Matter Either Exclusively or Very Significantly Concerned with Bayonets. INTERNATIONAL MILITARY CARTRIDGE RIFLES AND BAYONETS The following table lists the most common international military rifles, their chambering, along with the most common bayonet types used with each. This list is not exhaustive, but is intended as a quick reference that covers the types most commonly encountered by today’s collectors. A Note Regarding Nomenclature: The blade configuration is listed, in parentheses, following the type. There is no precise dividing line between what blade length constitutes a knife bayonet vs. a sword bayonet. Blades 10-inches or shorter are typically considered knife bayonets. Blades over 12-inches are typically considered sword bayonets. Within the 10-12 inch range, terms are not consistently applied. For purposes of this chart, I have designated any blade over 12 inches as a sword bayonet. Collecting and Shooting the Military Surplus Rifle (2006) -Surplusrifle.com Page 1 of 4 Please make certain to visit our new Showcase of Sponsors! More! Article by Ralph Cobb Adobe PDF Downloadable Version of Article Why collect bayonets? Because it's a great way to add depth to your rifle collecting activities! Bayonets have their own rich history often separate and apart from the rifles they mount to and the search for bayonets sometimes leads to places a rifle collector wouldn't normally go. In this first article I will discuss how the bayonet came to be, different types of bayonets, how to get started collecting bayonets, and where to look for bayonets. My foray into bayonet collecting began innocently enough in 1998 with the desire to acquire a few bayonets to go with the rifles in my collection. As is so often is the case with collectors, one thing lead to another and bayonets soon took on a life of their own to become a collection in their own right. Bayonet bay·o·net noun: A blade adapted to fit the muzzle end of a rifle and used as a weapon in close combat. Word History: It is not unusual for a word to come from a place name. Remaining in use with second- ary units until 1916/1917, three bayonet types were provided for the rifle during its official service life: a quadrilateral cross-sectioned socket form, followed by a yataghan-style sword bayonet, and finally a shortened and straightened version of this same yataghan bayonet. As such these three bayonets provide a classic illustration of bayonet typology for the period. However, their history and characteristics have never been assessed in detail, an omission this article seeks to remedy. KEYWORDS Peabody-Martini
