INTRODUCTION A further six books aimed at bayonet collectors and researchers have been traced which were published before January 2005 and which should have been listed in previously published editions of this Bibliography. These are rather tardily included in the present listings. In addition, a further 22 books and booklets have appeared in the five year period primarily covered by this present Bibliography. General works on bayonets world-wide have continued to appear, including the re-publication of Kiesling’s classic four volumes now presented as a single volume with bayonets classified country by country rather than by overall length as formerly. The third of J. P. Vial’s significant four volume French language study of world bayonets has also been published. Polish authors have also not been idle, producing new and updated studies on bayonets in general. Dr. James A. Maddox’s classic and definitive book on bayonet collecting has proved a very significant contribution to the subject. In addition, some authors have focused on the bayonets of a particular nation, new works having been completed covering the bayonets of France, Germany and Japan. Others have concentrated on a more specialised field of study, presenting readers with detailed studies of modern Danish models, U.S. Krag bayonets, the Czech Vz 58, French National Defense 1870-71 variants, early bayonets in a Maltese museum collection and the U.S. M9 bayonet. • International Military Cartridge Rifles and Bayonets
INTERNATIONAL MILITARY CARTRIDGE RIFLES AND BAYONETS The following table lists the most common international military rifles, their chambering, along with the most common bayonet types used with each. This list is not exhaustive, but is intended as a quick reference that covers the types most commonly encountered by today’s collectors. A Note Regarding Nomenclature: The blade configuration is listed, in parentheses, following the type. There is no precise dividing line between what blade length constitutes a knife bayonet vs. a sword bayonet. Blades 10-inches or shorter are typically considered knife bayonets. Blades over 12-inches are typically considered sword bayonets. Within the 10-12 inch range, terms are not consistently applied. For purposes of this chart, I have designated any blade over 12 inches as a sword bayonet. Article by Ralph Cobb Adobe PDF Downloadable Version of Article Why collect bayonets? Because it's a great way to add depth to your rifle collecting activities!
