PROBABrnY AND ' MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS Kazirnierz Urbanik, the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of this journal, and Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Wroclaw University, died of cancer Sunday, May 29, 2005, at the age of 75. His research, teaching and adrninis- trative work was decisive in creation of a major school in probability theory in Poland. Born in Krzernieniec in Eastern Poland, following the end of World War I1 and transfer of the city to Western Ukraine, he moved with his family to the western Polish territory of Lower Silesia, where he lived for the next sixty years, almost all of them in the regional capital city of Wrociaw. Urbanik, a two-term Rector of Wroclaw University and an Ordinary Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, led the Institute of Mathematics in Wroclaw for several decades. His over 180 published scientific papers develop- ed novel approaches to problems of probability theory, the theory of stochas- tic processes, mathematical physics, and information theory. Today they are well known in the global mathematics research community. His favored tools were functional and analytic but he did not shrink from tackling diEicult un- soIved problems in universal algebra either. As an educator Urbanik was the principal advisor of seventeen doctoral students, who continued work on his ideas at academic institutions of five continents. His fairness, warmth, generosity and devotion to them were legen- dary and they reciprocated in kind. He loved doing and teaching mathematics and despite his long and incapacitating illness, about which he never com- plained, continued working with the students, publishing and fulfilling his edi- torial duties almost to the last days of his life. -
Hugo Dionizy Steinhaus (1887-1972)
ACTA UNIVERSITATIS LODZIENSIS FOLIA OECONOMICA 228, 2009 _____________ Czesław Domański* HUGO DIONIZY STEINHAUS (1887-1972) Hugo Steinhaus was born on 14 January 1887 in Jasło in south -eastern Poland. His father Bogusław was the director of the credit co-operative and his mother Ewelina Lipschitz-Widajewicz ran house. In 1905 Steinhaus graduated from public grammar school in Jasło and later that year he enrolled at Lvov University where he studied philosophy and mathematics. In 1906 he moved to Geling University where he listened to lec- tures of Hilbert and Klein - the two eminent scientists who exerted enormous influence on development of mathematics. At that time Steinhaus developed friendly contacts with Poles studying there, namely: Banachiewicz, Sierpiński, the Dziewulski brothers, Łomnicki, Chwistek, Stożek, Janiszewski and Mazurkiewicz. In Geting in 1911 he earned his doctor’s degree on the basis of the doctoral dissertation Neue Anvendungen des Dirichleťsehen Prinzip which was written under the scientific supervision of David Hilbert. He then went to University of Munich and to Paris in order to continue his studies. In the years 1911-1912 Steinhaus lived in Jasło and Cracow. At the out- break of World War I he joined the army and took part in a few battles of the First Artillery Regiment of Polish Legions. Since 1916 he stayed in Lvov where he worked first for The Centre for Country’s Reconstruction and then as an as- sistant at Lvov University. In 1917 he obtained the postdoctoral degree on the basis of the dissertation entitled On some properties of Fourier series. One year later he published Additive und stetige Funktionaloperationen (Mathematische Zeitschrift”,5/1919) considered to be the first Polish work on functional opera- tions. -

Design of engineering systems in Polish mines in the third quarter of the 20th century∗ Aneta Antkowiak, Monika Kaczmarz and Krzysztof Szajowski April 2, 2018 Abstract Participation of mathematicians in the implementation of economic projects in Poland, in which mathematics-based methods played an important role, happened sporadically in the past. Usually methods known from publications and verified were adapted to solving related problems. The subject of this paper is the cooperation between math- ematicians and engineers in Wrocław in the second half of the twenti- eth century established in the form of an analysis of the effectiveness of engineering systems used in mining. The results of this cooperation showed that at the design stage of technical systems it is necessary to take into account factors that could not have been rationally controlled before. The need to explain various aspects of future exploitation was a strong motivation for the development of mathematical modeling methods. These methods also opened research topics in the theory of stochastic processes and graph theory. The social aspects of this coop- eration are also interesting. 1 Preliminaries. In the first half of the twentieth century significant advances in mathemat- ical models of random phenomena led to the emergence of a separate area of mathematics using advanced algebra and mathematical methods to solve engineering problems. This year’s centenary of regaining independence by Poland and the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Statistics Poland provide an opportunity to remind and popularise pioneers and outstanding Polish statisticians. With this in mind, a publication entitled Polish statisticians was created. The aim of the publication is to preserve the memory of the people who contributed to the organisation, development and popularisation of statistics in Poland and in the international arena. The publication presents biographies of thirty persons – eminent scientists and educators, discoverers of new methods and theories – who made a significant contribution to the development of statistics. Reading the biograms brings closer the evolution of statistical thought and helps to understand its universality, indicating the links with other disciplines of science. We hope that this publication will be a valuable item in the library of every reader interested in statistics as a science describing the world around us and the phenomena occurring in it. -

Edward Marczewski
Roman Duda and Stanisław Hartman Edward Marczewski (November 15, 1907 – October 17, 1976)* Edward Marczewski was born in Warsaw as the only child of J. and A. Szpilrajn. After his father, a renowned Warsaw surgeon, died in 1911, Edward was brought up by his mother (later, for many years, a Warsaw University librarian). He attended the Stefan Batory Secondary School, which enjoyed a reputation as the finest in Warsaw, in particular in mathematics. He always had a pleasant memory of his school years. In 1925, after completing his secondary education, he began mathematical studies at Warsaw University. That was five years after the death of Zygmunt Janiszewski who had propagated new mathematical disciplines—topology and set theory—as the research areas most promising for young Polish mathematics. It was in these directions that the research activities of the Warsaw School developed and, at the time when Marczewski entered the university, they were already flourishing. The research was originally led by Mazurkiewicz and Sierpiński, and later also by Knaster, Kuratowski, Saks and others. In this mathematical community reigned an atmosphere of continuous vigorous cooperation and comradeship. During his studies, not only did Marczewski reveal a great mathematical talent but also showed fondness of and a gift for organizing and editing, which later became an outstanding trait of his activities in Wrocław. He was an active member of the Math- ematical and Physical Association of Warsaw University Students, serving as president for two years. In his student years he also developed an interest in the Polish language and literature, and established numerous and lasting ties with the youth of the Polish philology department.
