Louise Jakobson, AMS Development Officer1 The world is full of opportunities and problems big and small, whether at the planetary level, in far-flung regions of the world, or right on our doorstep. The array of environ- mental, social, educational, scientific, and medical issues that exist is endless. But, formi- dable as these issues are, human beings work collectively to make things better. They find solutions and implement them through government, industry, or business. At individual and group levels, they also make progress by giving and volunteering via nonprofits and other organizations. Focusing on the United States, Americans have the reputation for being generous, and the data reflect that. The World Giving Index report for 2018 (https://www.cafonline .org/about-us/publications/2018-publications/caf-world-giving -index-2018) ranks the United States fourth worldwide (the top three countries are In- Courtesy of Billy Durvin. Courtesy donesia, Australia, and New Zealand; Ireland, the UK, and Singapore are close behind the US). According to this study, 72% of Americans helped a stranger, 61% donated money, and 39% volunteered. How much do people donate and what are they supporting? Giving USA reports that Americans gave $427.71 billion to nonprofits in 2018. Individuals account for 77% of that number (including bequests); foundations gave 18%, and corporations 5%. Where did donors direct their generosity? Religion (29%) received the largest segment, followed by Education (14%); Human Services (12%); Foundations (12%); Health (10%); Public-Society Benefit (7%); International Affairs (5%); Arts, Culture, and Humanities (5%); Environment/Animals (3%); and Individuals (2%). There is a multitude of organizations to give to, and everyone has their own reasons for what they choose to support. At the AMS, donors regularly let us know why they are making their gift, large or small. In fact, one of the joys of working in fundraising is listening to donors share their stories! Often, they want to give back to their profession and support the younger generation, make opportunities available to others that they did not have themselves, spur important research in their field by supporting a prize, or honor a mentor or give in memory of an esteemed colleague or great mathematician. Each mathematics organization offers something different to the mathematics community. In many ways, the AMS is uniquely positioned to make an impact because of its longev- ity, financial stability, national and international reach, and active community of mathematicians in governance and committees. There are many examples of mathematicians and people in other fields striving to advance a particular area to help solve some of the mathematical world’s challenges. Paul Sally’s passion for education drove him to establish the Arnold Ross Lectures endowed fund to bring top scholars to talented high school students; Don and Jill Knuth’s contributions over recent years have helped Mathematical Reviews in many ways, including indexing, author dis- ambiguation, and supporting native scripts; Joan and Joseph Birman created a Fellowship for Women Scholars to nurture outstanding research by mid-career women mathematicians; and many AMS donors have donated to the Epsilon Fund to benefit high school summer math camps. Others prefer to give unrestricted funds, allowing the AMS flexibility to direct resources to the area of greatest need, including advocacy efforts for mathematics in Washington, DC; meetings and conferences; or additional funds to the MathSciNet for Developing Countries Program to ensure access to the mathematical literature. On average, approximately half of AMS annual donors choose to make their gift unrestricted. Louise Jakobson is a development officer at the AMS. If you want to effect change now, you can choose to have the AMS utilize your contribution immediately. If support for future needs and challenges is what is important to you, you can direct your gift to an existing endowment (meaning that the funds are invested and provide funding for a specified purpose for the years to come), or talk to development staff about creating a new one. The AMS has nineteen endowed funds supporting prizes; donors may also establish named endowed funds to support broad areas of need, including early career mathematicians, education, diversity, and advocacy. One such example is the Mark Green and Kathryn Kert Green Fund for Inclusion and Diversity; another is the Next Generation Fund, which was recently created to support the needs of current and future generations of early career mathematicians, an ongoing priority of the AMS. I was interested to learn that endowments have a much longer history than one might imagine. The earliest known endowed chairs were established by the Roman emperor (and Stoic philosopher) Marcus Aurelius in Athens in AD 176 for the four major schools of philosophy, and the earliest known surviving endowed professorships were created by Lady Margaret Beaufort in Oxford and Cambridge in 1502 (these two funds are still in existence today!). Finally, a number of donors also give through charitable estate planning, taking a longer-term view of their charitable giving. For example, Franklin Peterson, Cathleen Synge Morawetz, and mathematical couple Steven Schot and Joanna Wood Schot made unrestricted bequests to the AMS, while Edmund and Nancy Tomastik have declared their bequest intention to establish a prize in differential equations. All of these individuals demonstrate the wish to impact math- ematics beyond their lifetimes. It can be very gratifying to know that you will be building mathematical research and scholarship for the future. I know from experience that donors care very much what happens in the organizations they support. The annual AMS Contributors List for the year 2019 will be published in next month’s issue of Notices. Approximately 1,400 donors a year support the AMS; as a development officer, I’ve had the privilege of talking with a number of these generous individuals. Welcome to ICM 2006, the 25th International Congress of Mathematicians, and the first ICM to be held in Spain. We offer our heartfelt thanks to the Spanish nation, so rich in history and culture, for its invitation to Madrid. We greatly appreciate that His Majesty King Juan Carlos is honouring mathematics by His presence here today. While celebrating this feast of mathematics, with the many talking-points that it will provide, it is worth reflecting on the ways in which our community functions. Mathematics is a profession of high standards and integrity. We freely discuss our work with others without fear of it being stolen, and research is communicated openly prior to formal publication. Editorial procedures are fair and proper, and work gains its reputation through merit and not by how it is promoted. These are the norms operated by the vast majority of mathematicians. The exceptions are rare, and they are noticed. Mathematics has a strong record of service, freely given. We see this in the time and care spent in the refereeing of papers and other forms of peer review. We see it in the running of mathematical societies and journals, in the provision of free mathematical software and teaching resources, and in the various projects world-wide to improve electronic access to the mathematical literature, old and new. We see it in the nurturing of students beyond the call of duty.

There are two primary components. The first deals with residually dihedral Galois representations. Namely, fix an odd prime p, and consider a continuous geometric representation ρ : GF ! GLn(O), where F is either a totally real field if n = 2, or a CM field if n > 2, and O is the integer ring of a finite extension of Qp. The goal is to prove the automorphy of representations whose residual representation ρ¯ has the property that the restriction to GF (ζp) is reducible, where ζp denotes a primitive p- th root of unity. This means the classical Taylor-Wiles hypothesis fails and classical patching techniques do not suffice to prove the automorphy of ρ. Building off the work of Thorne, we prove an automorphy theorem in the n = 2 case and apply the result to elliptic curves. The case n > 2 is examined briefly as well. The second component deals with the generic unobstructedness of compatible systems of adjoint representations.

    Ring (mathematics) 1 Ring (mathematics) In mathematics, a ring is an algebraic structure consisting of a set together with two binary operations usually called addition and multiplication, where the set is an abelian group under addition (called the additive group of the ring) and a monoid under multiplication such that multiplication distributes over addition.a[›] In other words the ring axioms require that addition is commutative, addition and multiplication are associative, multiplication distributes over addition, each element in the set has an additive inverse, and there exists an additive identity. One of the most common examples of a ring is the set of integers endowed with its natural operations of addition and multiplication. Certain variations of the definition of a ring are sometimes employed, and these are outlined later in the article. Ring theorists study properties common to both familiar mathematical structures such as integers and polynomials, and to the many less well-known mathematical structures that also satisfy the axioms of ring theory. The ubiquity of rings makes them a central organizing principle of contemporary mathematics.[1] Ring theory may be used to understand fundamental physical laws, such as those underlying special relativity and symmetry phenomena in molecular chemistry. The concept of a ring first arose from attempts to prove Fermat's last theorem, starting with Richard Dedekind in the 1880s. After contributions from other fields, mainly number theory, the ring notion was generalized and firmly established during the 1920s by Emmy Noether and Wolfgang Krull.[2] Modern ring theory—a very active mathematical discipline—studies rings in their own right.

Here it is written about the Lvov School of Mathematics in greater detail, which I could not do in the short reviews. There are facts described in the book as well as some information the books lacks as, for instance, the information about the planned print in Mathematical Monographs of the second volume of Banach's book and also books by Mazur, Schauder and Tarski. My two short reviews of Duda’s book were published in MathSciNet [16] and Mathematical Intelligencer [17]. Here I write about the Lvov School of Mathematics in greater detail, which was not possible in the short reviews. I will present the facts described in the book as well as some information the books lacks as, for instance, the information about the planned print in Mathematical Monographs of the second volume of Banach’s book and also books by Mazur, Schauder and Tarski. So let us start with a discussion about Duda’s book. His parents, Franciszek and Maria n´ee Rossknecht, had five sons. Father died when he was only four years old. In 1919 Orlicz's family moved to Lw´ow,where he completed his secondary education and then studied mathematics at the Jan Kazimierz University in Lw´owhaving as teachers Stefan Banach, Hugo Steinhaus and Antoni Lomnicki. In the years 1922-1929 he worked as a teaching assistent at the Depart- ment of Mathematics of Jan Kazimierz University. In 1928 he received doctor's degree upon presenting a thesis \Some prob- lems in the theory of orthogonal series" under the supervision of Eustachy Zyli´nski.In_ the same year he married Zofia Krzysik (born: 26 Sept. 1898, Foca, Bosnia { died: 5 Nov. 1999, Pozna´n). In the late twenties and early thirties Orlicz worked as a teacher in private secondary schools and in a military school. Academic year 1929/30 Orlicz spent at the G¨ottingenUniversity on a scholarship in theoretical physics, not in mathematics. During his stay in G¨ottingenhe started his collaboration with Zygmunt Wilhelm Birnbaum (also from Lw´ow). They published two papers in Studia Mathematica in 1930 and 1931 whose results became a starting point for Orlicz to consider and investigate in 1932 and 1936 function spaces more general than Lp spaces which later on became known as Orlicz spaces.
