  • The Golden Dream Migration and Realism in Fictional Film
The Golden Dream Migration and Realism in Fictional Film Montserrat Algarabel* igration has been widely addressed throughout the history of Mexican cinema. In both dramas and documentary features, Mexican filmmakers have explored Mstories and characters involving this constant flow of people, mostly from Mexico into the United States, bringing forth changing perceptions and creating different perspec ti ves about this complex phenomenon. Some examples of the various approaches to this in Mexican movies are fictional films by renowned directors, such asEspaldas mojadas (Wetbacks) (Alejandro Galindo, 1953), a classic crime thriller set in the border town of Ciudad Juárez; La ilegal (The Illegal Woman) (Arturo Ripstein, 1979), the melodramatic account of a woman’s disappointments and struggles in California, starring soap opera diva Lucía Méndez; and El jardín del Edén (The Garden of Eden, María Novaro, Canada/France/Mexico, 1994), an almost mythical quest by a group of women for a promised land along the MexicoU.S. border. Re cent Mexican documentary films likeMi vida dentro (My Life Inside, Lucía Gajá, 2007), La frontera infinita (The Infinite Border, Juan Manuel Sepúlveda, 2007), andLos que se quedan (Those Who Remain, Juan Carlos Rulfo and Carlos Hagerman, 2008), focus on critically describing the plight of both Central Americans and Mexicans who migrate to the U.S., most of them lacking legal documentation, as well as on the manifold aspects and consequences of this specific kind of migration. Through fictional and documentary narratives, these Mexican filmmakers have depicted the neverending dangers of travelling north and then trying to safely cross the border without papers, coupled with the constant fear of deportation once in the United States.

Alice is the failed project of a mother who, because she was unable to have a child of her own, adopted a charming little girl, who then turned into an impertinent and rather ugly teenager, a compulsive liar who seems to be nothing more than an endless source of problems.

Cannes 2004 Report By Ron Holloway Fall 2004 Issue of KINEMA THE ”NEW” 57eme FESTIVAL DE CANNES 2004 FOR a quarter century the Cannes film festival has been associated, for better or for worse, with one name– Gilles Jacob. As the délégué général of the Festival International du Film for all of 23 years (since 1978), he selected the films, set its pace, and stood at the top of the stairs to welcome producers, directors, andstars to their premiere screenings in the Palais. Pierre Viot, the former festival president and Gilles’s right-hand man, took care of the diplomatic honneurs, while Christine Aimé ran the Service de presse like a Swiss watch. That’s all in the past. Cannes, the kingpin of all international film festivals, now has a new name, anew team, a new vision. First of all, the name. When guests arrived at this year’s event – the 57th – they saw the emblem “Festival de Cannes” emblazoned on the facade of the Palais des Festivals, displayed prominently on posters, and decorating the front cover of the catalogue. For some, the change in the name was hardly noticeable – because, for nearly a decade now, the official email address has read “festival-cannes.fr.” “We simply took out the ‘hyphen’,” mused Jacob. “Besides, since everybody refers to us as ‘Cannes,’ the adjustment went smoothly.” As for the team, the trio – Gilles Jacob, President du Festival, Véronique Cayla, directrice générale, and Thierry Frémaux, délégué artistique – was officially introduced to cineastes and festivaliers two years ago on a full page in the 55th anniversary issue of “Cannes Memories,” the official festival album.
