  • Identification Key to the Subfamilies of Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera)
Identification key to the subfamilies of Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera) Gavin Broad Dept. of Entomology, The Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD, UK Notes on the key, February 2011 This key to ichneumonid subfamilies should be regarded as a test version and feedback will be much appreciated (emails to [email protected]). Many of the illustrations are provisional and more characters need to be illustrated, which is a work in progress. Many of the scanning electron micrographs were taken by Sondra Ward for Ian Gauld’s series of volumes on the Ichneumonidae of Costa Rica. Many of the line drawings are by Mike Fitton. I am grateful to Pelle Magnusson for the photographs of Brachycyrtus ornatus and for his suggestion as to where to include this subfamily in the key. Other illustrations are my own work. Morphological terminology mostly follows Fitton et al. (1988). A comprehensively illustrated list of morphological terms employed here is in development. In lateral views, the anterior (head) end of the wasp is to the left and in dorsal or ventral images, the anterior (head) end is uppermost. There are a few exceptions (indicated in figure legends) and these will rectified soon. Identifying ichneumonids Identifying ichneumonids can be a daunting process, with about 2,400 species in Britain and Ireland. These are currently classified into 32 subfamilies (there are a few more extralimitally). Rather few of these subfamilies are reconisable on the basis of simple morphological character states, rather, they tend to be reconisable on combinations of characters that occur convergently and in different permutations across various groups of ichneumonids.

Acta Universitatis Agriculturae et Silviculturae Mendelianae Brunensis, 65(1): 0167–0170. The subfamily Cryptinae Kirby, 1837 is considered the largest group in the Ichneumonidae with more than 400 described genera including around 4500 species. The subfamily has a worldwide distribution and its members play a key role in the biological control as parasitoids of many important pests. The study provides a new and updated overview of the Slovakian ichneumonid fauna after 28 years. So far over 750 species of Ichneumonidae have been reported from Slovakia, including around 150 species in the subfamily Cryptinae. Our study presents a complete checklist of Cryptinae and adds 32 species to the Slovakian fauna. Keywords: Cryptinae, Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae, parasitoids, Slovakia INTRODUCTION 1987), semiaquaticism (Frohne, 1939), and even echolocation (Quicke, 2014).

A total of 4982 specimens be longing to 475 different species \vere collected. Extrapolations from double-log functions revealed that there may be as many as 1330 parasitoid species present per year. 455 of the 475 species were parasito ids. 155 of them attack dipterans. 48 lepidopterans. 36 beetles. 23 wasps, 22 plant hoppers and 13 ap hids. 47 of the species are egg-parasitoids and parasitoids of miners. ectophytophages count for 44 of 2 the \V asp species. The abundance of the wasp fauna was rather high ( 1120 ± 53 in d. m- a- I ( 1986) and 2 1 335 ± 42 ind. m - a- ( 1988). Most abundant were the parasitoids of miners, gall-makers and the egg parasitoids. Compared \vith the high abundance the biomass was low. In 1986 the wasps weighed a total 2 1 2 1 of 194 ± 24 n1gDW m- a- and in 1988 only 69 ± 20 mgDW m- a- . The parasitoids of ectophytopha gous lepidopterans and coleopterans counted for n1ore than half of the whole biomass. Kasparyan started his extensive study of Mexican Icheumonidae in 1998 as a profes- sor of the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas in Cd. Victoria, Mexico. From 2000 to 2013, he has published two monographs and 38 journal articles on Mexican Ichneumonidae, where he described 7 new genera and 168 species and subspecies belonging to 10 subfamilies of Ichneumonidae, and provided a large number of new faunistic and host records. All new genera and 83 % of described species and sub- species belong to the Cryptinae, one of the most difficult, in terms of identification, and poorly known ichneumonid subfamilies. At the present day, as a result of work by D.R. Kasparyan and collaborators, over 1300 species and 343 genera belonging to 28 ichneumonid subfamilies are known from Mexico. Here we provide a complete list of new taxa described by D.R. Kasparyan from Mexico, all his mono- graphs and journal articles on Mexican Icheumonidae, and the most important publications in memoirs and collections of papers.

  • Insect Egg Size and Shape Evolve with Ecology but Not Developmental Rate Samuel H
ARTICLE https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-019-1302-4 Insect egg size and shape evolve with ecology but not developmental rate Samuel H. Church1,4*, Seth Donoughe1,3,4, Bruno A. S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). The Ichneumonidae, one of the largest insect families, includes beneficial insects parasitizing several pests. Due to the geographic and climatic varability of Iran, a great Ichneumonidae diversity may be expected, but our knowledge about fauna and biodiversity of this family in Iran is still insufficient, with only a few sporadic biodiversity studies on Iranian ichneumonids. This paper examines the alpha diversity, species evenness, species richness and beta diversity of the Ichneumonid parasitoid wasp assemblages in Golestan Province, northeastern Iran with an emphasis on the two largest Ichneumonid subfamilies: Cryptinae and Ichneumoninae. The spatial diversity of Ichneumonidae in two consecutive years was studied in three habitats: forest, rangeland and orchards. A total of 336 specimens representing 62 genera and 97 species were collected and identified.

Beitr. 46/2 1373-1377 19.12.2014 A faunistic study on the Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonoidea) from the west of Iran H. GHAHARI & R. JUSSILA Abstract: The fauna of the family Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonoidea) from some regions of western Iran is studied in this paper. Totally 17 species from 15 genera and 4 subfamilies (Cryptinae, Ichneumoninae, Metopiinae, Pimplinae) were determined. Key words: Hymenoptera, Ichneumonoidea, Ichneumonidae, Fauna, Iran. Introduction The Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonoidea) is the biggest family in the order Hymenoptera with 51 generally recognized subfamilies, 1579 genera and 24.281 described species (YU et al. 2012). TOWNES (1969) estimated that there could be about 60.000 Ichneumonidae species in the world, but because of the poor knowledge of the tropical faunas the present investigators estimate that the size of the family could be higher than 100.000 (GAULD 1997; ÇORUH et al. 2014). Ichneumonids are common as the parasitoids of various agricultural and forest pests and therefore with important role in biological control (GUPTA 1987; GODFRAY 1994). They parasitize mainly the larvae and pupae of holometabolous insects, excluding the Megaloptera and Siphonaptera. Whereas ichneumonids are almost completely restricted to the immature stages of the Holometabola (a few groups use egg nests of Pseudoscorpionida, egg cocoons of Araneae or adult Araneae) (GAULD 1988; WAHL & SHARKEY 1993; ÇORUH & KOLAROV 2010).
