J ournal of Glaciology, V ol. 1 I , No. 63, 1972 A QUANTITATIVE ASSESSMENT OF DIRT-CONE DYNAMICS By DAVID J. DREWRY (Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge CB2 IER, Engla nd) ABSTRACT . Quantitative investigations have been made of ice-cored dirt cones on Bersaerkerbrre in north-east Greenland. Experiments were also undertaken to eva luate field observations. M easurem ents included: m aximum cone dimensions, sediment thickness and pa rticle size, cone growth ra tes, slo pe a ngles and the tempera ture distribution within the d ebris layer and ice core. Particle size, which h as not been stressed in previous studies, a nd rela ted liquid consistency limits, appear as the domina nt controls in cone forma tion, independent of d ebris thickness within the observed ra nge of 10 mm to 125 mm. A thres hold gra in·size for dir t-cone inception was found, between 0.2 mm and 0.6 mm. The growth of con es was usually no t more tha n 50% of the a blation over "clean" ice. T empera ture m easuremen ts within dirt cones has enabled heat-flow studies to be made, evalua ting the thermal conductivity of a sediment layer a nd the heat tra nsfer involved in m elting the ice core. A simple m odel of dirt-cone d ynamics is proposed , characterized by negative feed backs and describing a stead y-sta te system. R ESUME. SPECIAL STAMP HISTORY Proposed Anglo-French Issue 1940 On 3 September 1939 France and Great Britain declared war upon Nazi Germany. In the following months an unprecedented degree of co-operation arose between the two countries on military, political and economic matters, which caused many hopeful observers to envisage an even closer union, extending beyond the war and drawing in other countries. The earliest recorded example of this enthusiasm seeking philatelic expression is that of M. Fernand Griffon, of Étables in Brittany who on 30 November 1939 wrote to both King George VI and President Albert Lebrun of France, suggesting a stamp for simultaneous release in both countries, either in separate languages and denominations, or, size permitting, combining both. The design would include a figure representing Peace and the legend ‘Notre But’ (Our Aim). He referred to bi-lingual stamps displaying the denomination in both local currencies issued in the Anglo-French Condominium of the New Hebrides from 1925 to 1938. M. Griffon's letter to President Lebrun was forwarded to the French Postal Administration, the PTT, who replied with a polite acknowledgement. His letter to King George VI was passed to the Foreign Office, who made no subsequent reply and, in fact, seem to have promptly mislaid it. Later, when the proposal had been taken up officially and was moving toward 1 fruition amidst wide public interest, M. Griffon wrote to various bodies, including the French Press, the PTT, the BBC and Buckingham Palace, in a vain attempt to win recognition as its originator. The initiative in fact came from M. -

With its pure, spectacular, and magical features, these regions attract numerous tourists. Ice and snow landscapes can provide not only visually-stimulating experiences for people, but also opportunities for outdoor play and movement. In China, ice and snow tourism is a new type of recreation; however, the establishment of snow and ice in relation to the suitability of the surrounding has not been clearly expressed. Based on multi-source data, such as tourism, weather, and traffic data, this paper employs the Delphi-analytic hierarchy process (AHP) evaluation method and a spatial analysis method to study the spatial differences of snow and ice tourism suitability in China. China’s ice and snow tourism is located in the latitude from 35◦N to 53.33◦N and latitude 41.5◦N to 45◦N and longitude 82◦E to 90◦E, with the main focus on latitude and terrain factors. -
