  • The Piano Compositional Style of Lucrecia Roces Kasilag D.M.A. Document
THE PIANO COMPOSITIONAL STYLE OF LUCRECIA ROCES KASILAG D.M.A. DOCUMENT Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Caroline Besana Salido, B.M., M.M. ***** The Ohio State University 2002 Document Committee: Approved by Professor Steven Glaser, Adviser Professor Arved Ashby Professor Kenneth Williams _______________ Document Adviser School of Music Copyright by Caroline Besana Salido 2002 ABSTRACT Often alluded to as the “First Lady of Philippine Music,” Lucrecia “King” Roces Kasilag, born in San Fernando, La Union, Philippines, on August 31, 1918, holds numerous national and international leadership roles as composer, educator, administrator, and researcher. Kasilag has composed more than 250 works covering most genres including orchestra, chamber, organ, piano, vocal, sacred, operetta, dance, theatre, electronic and incidental music. She is a nationally acclaimed composer and artist in the Philippines. However, most of her works are largely unpublished and difficult to retrieve for use in the academic, as well as in the performance community. Therefore, her contributions are not well known in the Western world to the degree they deserve. This document intends to provide a brief historical background of Philippine music, a biography of Kasilag describing her work and accomplishments, a list of her compositions and her contributions as a composer in ii today’s musical world. The writer will present detailed analyses of selected piano works for their sound, texture, harmony, melody, rhythm and form. The writer will also examine Western and Eastern influences within these piano works, reflecting Kasilag’s classic and romantic orientation with some use of twentieth-century techniques.

Desiree Quintero Dansuer Bantugen: Gendering of the Filipino Hero DESIREE QUINTERO University of Hawaii at Manoa Introduction With the stage black, a melody of a chant filters hauntingly through the air. One cannot decipher if it is a woman chanting, or perhaps a flute rendering a simi- lar sound. A lively, bouncing kobing1 enters the melodic soundscape. Rattling engenders anticipation in a suspense-filled theater. The thumping of a primal drum and the clashing/crashing of gongs generate sounding in a chaotic frenzy, which makes its way into for the procession from stage left; it is led by two bare-chested men carrying 10 foot poles with flag like tassels hanging from what looks like large pointy “rice hats.” Three Figure 1: malong2-clad ballerinas follow closely behind, execut- Poster of ing coupé en dehor pirouettes alternately left, right, left, the right twirling their woven palm leaf fans. They are Darangen ni Bantugen partnered with three men with arms in a stylized fourth position3, wearing spandexed purple knee length tights with a silver sash/apron hanging from hips. • THE ETHNIC TRADITION the Filipino's Earliest Ancestors Travelled to the Islands from Other Points of Asia and Southeast Asia
THE ETHNIC TRADITION The Filipino’s earliest ancestors travelled to the Islands from other points of Asia and Southeast Asia. They migrated by land or by sea on boats known today as barangay. They settled in caves like those of Palawan, and in time dispersed to other places in the Archipelago, settling in villages lining the coasts of bays and seas, the shores of lakes, or the banks of rivers. They also settled in mountains and valleys all over the archipelago. The Aeta were the first to arrive about 30,000 years ago. They lived in the lowland coastal areas until successive migration wars with the Malay drove them farther and farther inland and into the mountains. Over the centuries the Malay groups took over the different parts of the archipelago and became known as the Ivatan in Batanes; the Tinguian, Ibaloy, Kankanay, Bontoc, Kalinga, and Isneg of the Cordilleras; the Gaddang, Isinai, Itawes, Ibanag, and Ilongo in the Caraballo and adjacent areas; the Mangyan of Mindoro; the Tagbanua of Palawan; the Tausug, Samal, Badjao, Yakan, and Jama Mapun of the Sulu Areas; the Maguindanao, Maranao, Manobo, Bagobo, Bukidnon, Tboli, Subanon, and other related groups in Mindanao; and the largest groups of all: the Ilocano, Pangasinan, Pampango, Tagalog, Bicol, Cebuano, Waray, and Ilongo. The Maguindanao, Maranao, Tausug, and other Mindanao groups were Islamized in the late 14th century, as were the Tagalog. At the Spanish advent, however, the Tagalog together with the Ilocano, Pangasinan, Pampango, Bicol, and the Visayan groups were Christianized. The literary tradition among indigenous Philippine groups was mostly oral.

Philippine Indigenous Arts Prepared By: Ms. Rosalia C. Rosario Ancient and pre-Spanish Era: It is believed that the first inhabitants of the Philippines arrived over many thousands of years ago. It is commonly thought that they migrated over a land bridge, which existed at that time, from the Asian mainland. The next known inhabitation is when the Negrito or Aeta arrived in the islands. However, they were driven back by several waves of immigrants from Indonesia, only to be followed by the maritime peoples of the Malayan islands.
