The Form of Politics: Aristotle and Plato on Friendship by John Von Heyking Nalin Ranasinghe Abstract Heyking’s ascent from Aristotle to Plato implies that something Platonic was lost in Aristotle’s accounts of friendship and politics. Plato’s views on love and soul turn out to have more in common with early Christianity. Stressing differences between eros and thumos, using Voegelin’s categories to discuss the Platonic Good, and expanding on Heyking’s use of Hermes, I show how tragic culture and true politics can be further enhanced by refining erotic friendship, repudiating Augustinian misanthropy, positing minimum doctrines about soul and city, and basing reason on Hermes rather than Apollo. Clark Dissertation Advisor: Christopher Kelly Montesquieu famously presents climate and terrain as enabling servitude in hot, fertile climes and on the exposed steppes of central Asia. He also traces England’s exemplary constitution, with its balanced constitution, independent judiciary, and gentle criminal practices, to the unique conditions of early medieval northern Europe. The English “found” their government “in the forests” of Germany. There, the marginal, variegated terrain favored the dispersion of political power, and a pastoral way of life until well into the Middle Ages. In pursuing a primitive honor unrelated to political liberty as such, the barbaric Franks accidentally established the rudiments of the most “well-tempered” government. His turn to these causes accidental to human purposes in Parts 3-6 begins with his analysis of the problem of unintended consequences in the history of political reform in Parts 1-2. While the idea of balancing political powers in order to prevent any one individual or group from dominating the rest has ancient roots, he shows that it has taken many centuries to understand just what needs to be balanced, and to learn to balance against one threat without inviting another. -

Augustine’s New Trinity The Anxious Circle of Metaphor* by Eugene Webb University of Washington Augustine of Hippo (354–430) would hardly have been pleased to hear himself described as an innovator. Like any other Church leader of his time, he would certainly have preferred to be thought of as a voice of the Church’s tradition rather than an originator of any aspect of it. Recent scholarship, however, has come increasingly to see him as the source of some of the most distinctive features of the Western Christian tradition. He is now recognized not only as the originator of the doctrine of Original Sin and the peculiarly western interpretation of the doctrine of the Trinity, but also as a major force in shaping for subsequent generations of Christians the relationship between the Church’s spiritual role and its role as a power in the social and political world. With this recognition of the innovativeness of Augustine’s thought has also come the question of how his original contributions are to be evaluated. How well, for exam- ple, did he understand the tradition he was trying to interpret? How well considered were his innovations? Did they introduce not only new perspectives, but perhaps also distortions of the tradition? Elaine Pagels, for example, in her recent book, Adam, Eve, and The Serpent, has said, regarding the influence of his doctrine of Original Sin: “Augustine would eventually transform traditional Christian teaching on free- dom, on sexuality, and on sin and redemption for all future generations of Christians. Where earlier generations of Jews and Christians had once found in Genesis 1–3 the affirmation of human freedom to choose good or evil, Augustine, living after the age of Constantine, found in the same text a story of human bondage.”1 She describes this as a “cataclysmic transformation in Christian thought” (Ibid.) and suggests that it is time Augustine’s distinctive contributions in this area were reexamined and reevalu- ated. -

September 2010 Not for citation or other use without author‟s permission IDEOLOGICAL TEMPTATIONS AND MORAL CRUSADING IN POLITICS AND DIPLOMACY: REMINDERS FROM VOEGELIN AND MORGENTHAU Ideological thinking about politics and diplomacy obviously impacts, as it distorts, the manner by which societies depict the truth of their existence, the ways in which the innermost purposes of a nation or people are acted upon by representatives of that truth (be they philosophers or statesmen), as well as the ethical potential of individuals, groups, and nations in a world not yet shorn of war and violence. Eric Voegelin‟s diagnosis of modern ideologies on the left and right helps to refocus our attention on the meaning of politics, political reality, and how ideological movements (as pseudo-philosophies and expressions of modern Gnosticism) empty politics of authentic moral content by seeking a world immanent rationale for the transcendent sources of being and order. While this important slice of the Voegelin corpus has received considerable attention over the years, less-often-investigated by political thinkers has been the impact of ideological claims in international politics, how to judge such claims, and how to assess the connection between ideological arguments and moral choices in foreign policy. If a truly open society is going concern for the twenty-first century, one that spans different groups and civilizations, and one that is linked to a “post-national” world, then we may well profit if ideology and ideological temptations have faded from the scene. -

Wilson Abstract This paper uses an extended discussion of Nietzsche’s essay “The Greek State” to uncover the political aspects of his early thinking. The paper builds on a similar discussion of another essay from the same period, “Homer on Competition,” in arguing that Nietzsche’s thinking is based on a confrontation with the work of Plato. It is argued that the key to understanding “The Greek State” is seeing it, in its entirety, as an enigmatic interpretation and re-writing of Plato’s Republic. Nietzsche interprets the Republic as Plato’s accomplishment of the task of the genuine philosopher: the legislation of values and the moulding of human character. As a birthday gift to Cosima Wagner in December 1872, Nietzsche sent a carefully crafted, leather-bound manuscript in his best handwriting; the manuscript was entitled Five Prefaces to Five Unwritten Books. Although this work has not received wide attention within Nietzsche scholarship, two of the essays in that volume, “Homer on Competition” and “The Greek State,” give us an insightful summary of Nietzsche’s early political thinking. “Homer on Competition” presents Nietzsche’s understanding of the nature of existence as strife, while “The Greek State” presents Nietzsche’s understanding of how this natural strife unfolds itself in human institutions and regimes. The essays, then, provide the early Nietzsche’s most thoughtful articulation of the relation between nature and culture or convention – phusis and nomos – the distinction which lies at the very roots of Western political philosophy. -

Why is it important? What does its use suggest about politics and philosophy? What is the relation of the art of writing to some of Strauss’s other famous rediscoveries—including his revival of the tradition of political philosophy, and his emphasis of the clash between ancients and moderns? We’ll consider these questions through a close reading of Leo Strauss’s 1952 book, Persecution and the Art of Writing—especially Chapters 1 and 2. No previous knowledge of Strauss’s work is presupposed, but students unfamiliar with Strauss might want to read two essays about his work--“Leo Strauss and the History of Political Philosophy,” by Nathan Tarcov and Thomas Pangle, in Leo Strauss and Joseph Cropsey, eds., History of Political Philosophy, 3rd and revised edition (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1987), and “What Was Leo Strauss Up To?” Public Interest, Fall 2003 (longer version available in Perspectives in Political Science, Fall 2004). You might also enjoy a book review of Persecution and the Art of Writing by Irving Kristol in Commentary magazine, October 1952 (“The Philosophers’ Hidden Truth”). FARR BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS JANUARY 2005 FIRST READER: ROBERT C. NEVILLE, Ph.D. SECOND READER: RAY L. HART, Ph.D. This dissertation offers an analysis of the impact of the American pragmatist tradition on the philosophical thought of the twentieth century political theorist, Eric Voegelin. It argues that Voegelin‟s early-career encounters with the thought of the classical American pragmatists shaped the tendency and organization of his philosophical methodology and that Voegelin‟s philosophical vision is significantly clarified when conceived in relation to this intellectual source. To make this case, this project focuses primarily on the influence of William James‟ philosophy on Voegelin‟s theory of consciousness and the treatment of other persistent themes developed throughout Voegelin‟s extensive writings that explicitly engage American pragmatist theory. The problem addressed directly within this examination concerns the ambiguous character of Voegelin‟s understanding of intentionality in consciousness, which has been exposed by recent scholarship examining Voegelin‟s philosophy. The issue of intentionality of consciousness for Voegelin, at one level, is quite similar to Husserl‟s understanding of the structural fact of consciousness as always involving an awareness of something. Hence Voegelin often refers to intentionality as the way consciousness, at least insofar as it may be known in human experience, both interacts with and is embodied in empirical concrete existence. This connotation of intentionality, for Voegelin, however, is viewed in a subordinate role to his notion of the “luminosity of consciousness”, which refers to consciousness as the “site” or “sensorium” of human participation in its encompassing reality.
