  • PAUL YOUNG in the Middle of the 1980S, Paul Young Became One Of
PAUL YOUNG In the middle of the 1980s, Paul Young became one of the biggest pop stars in the world, creating a body of work that endures to this day. A blend of the old school and new school, he was the epitome of someone who had worked his way up from – quite literally – the factory floor to become a superstar, scoring number one singles on both sides of the Atlantic. When he broke through in 1983, his Anthony Price besuited look was one of two iconic pop images in the UK that year. The other was David Bowie, then under his serious moonlight. Paul Young was born in the rock’n’roll era and grew up during the beat boom. Born in Luton in January 1956, he took piano lessons, was a self- taught guitarist, and as a teenager, fell under the thrall of Island Records. Young loved Free and because of them, he began listening to things around the margins, things that they listened to. He wanted to play bass like Andy Fraser and sing like Paul Rodgers. “I was always drawn towards to blues and soul.” Young recalls. “Even though Free had had a hit with ‘All Right Now’, they were a blues band, they knew they needed a pop song, so they wrote a pop song, and it was a hit. But when you look at their other stuff, they went straight back to the blues.” In 1972, aged 16, Young took up a position at the Vauxhall manufacturing plant in Luton, serving an apprenticeship just like his father before him.

< ^ The Schreiber Times Vol. XXVIII Paul D. Schreiber High School Wednesday, September 30, 1987 ZANETTI TAKES CHARGE Board Names Guidance Head as Acting Principal by Dave Weintraub When Dr. Frank Banta, Schreiber's principal for eight years, departed at the end (rf the last school year for a different job, he left some large shoes to fill. The school board and Superintendent Dr. William Heebink set out on a search for a new principal over the summer. Many applicants were reviewed, but no one was picked. The board and Dr. Heebink decided to extend the search through the 1987-88 school year. To fill the void Dr. Banta had left, they asked John Zanetti, Chairman of the Guidance Department, to serve as acting principal. He accepted, and was given a ten-month contract, which began in September. Most people who know Mr. Zanetti know him as a soft- spoken and amiable man. He has been in the Port Washington school system for many years, and he had humble beginnings. He started work at Salem School as a physical education teacher in 1958. He stayed there for six years and during that time in- troduced wrestling and lacrosse to the high school. He became the first coach of those teams. After Salem, he taught physical educa- tion at Schreiber for two years. He became a guidance counselor in 1967. He was appointed guidance chairman in 1980. He has now moved to the top of Schreiber's administrative lad- der. Has his transition been smooth? "I have an ulcer," he jokes. "Actually, I think I've ad- justed better than I thought I would.

  • TIER Academic Review University of Iowa Background Information
TIER Academic Review University of Iowa Background Information Submitted to: Board of Regents State of Iowa and Pappas Consulting Group, Inc. Submitted by: Office of the Provost The University of Iowa 17 April, 2015 TIER Academic Review: University of Iowa Background Information April 2015 Executive Summary Collected in and attached to this document are various materials related to University of Iowa planning and progress in the areas of enrollment management and e-learning. Enrollment Management In carrying out all aspects of its academic mission the University of Iowa is guided by its strategic plan, which sets expectations and guides the university to take advantage of emerging opportunities and to meet developing challenges. The university’s current plan, Renewing The Iowa Promise—approved by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, in fall 2010—lays out four strategic priority areas (the “four pillars”), the first of which is Student Success, defined as having three dimensions: access, affordability, and quality. The “animating strategic vision” identified in the plan is of “a distinguished research university of global reach and impact that has, at its core, vibrant programs for student success.” Under the Student Success pillar, the plan identifies strategic initiatives related to access and enrollment growth, enhancing the undergraduate student experience, and supporting educational quality and timely degree completion in graduate and professional programs. The development of initiatives related to undergraduate student success was informed by lessons learned during the university’s self-study for its 2008 reaccreditation by the Higher Learning Commission, which included a special emphasis on undergraduate education. During the current planning period (2010-2016) the university has implemented several successful programs—many of them highlighted in the attached report—to support undergraduate student success.
