Ledeganckstraat 35, B-9000 Gent, Belgium ABSTRACT: A cage exclusion experiment was used to examine the interaction between the eplbenthos (permanent and vls~tlng)and the macroinfauna of a high intertidal Kenyan Avicennia marina man- grove sediment. Densities of Ollgochaeta (families Tubificidae and Enchytraeidae), Amphipoda, Insecta larvae, Polychaeta and macro-Nematoda, and a broad range of environmental factors were fol- lowed over 5 mo of caging. A significant increase of amphipod and insect larvae densities in the cages indicated a positive exclusion effect, while no such effect was observed for oligochaetes (Tubificidae in particular), polychaetes or macronematodes. Resource competitive interactions were a plausible expla- nation for the status of the amphipod community. This was supported by the parallel positive exclusion effect detected for microalgal densities. It is therelore hypothesized that competition for microalgae and deposited food sources is the determining structuring force exerted by the epibenthos on the macrobenthic infauna. Box 139109, Jeddah 21323, Saudi Arabia Abstract: The increased occurrences of diabetes have led to the utilization of the curative plants in search of the best remedies. The usage of medicinal plants has been embraced worldwide since it is a critical part of the public healthcare. Rhizophora mucronata and Avicenna marina are vulnerable plants that require protection for their continued significance in the cure of diabetes. The two plants have proved to be antiviral and antibacterial in nature. Traditionally, the Rhizophora mucronata and Avicenna marina were utilized to cure diabetes. Although there is tremendous progress in the diabetes cure through the oral hypoglycemic compounds, there is a consistent search for the newer medicines. Mostly these mangrove trees have antidiabetic activity despite the fact that they have not been accepted. However, the traditional medicine system has used such plants with success. This review showed some of the previous data on the Rhizophora mucronata and Avicenna marina that were tested on the rats in medical laboratories. Maritime Swamp Forest (Typic Subtype)
MARITIME SWAMP FOREST (TYPIC SUBTYPE) Concept: Maritime Swamp Forests are wetland forests of barrier islands and comparable coastal spits and back-barrier islands, dominated by tall trees of various species. The Typic Subtype includes most examples, which are not dominated by Acer, Nyssa, or Fraxinus, not by Taxodium distichum. Canopy dominants are quite variable among the few examples. Distinguishing Features: Maritime Shrub Swamps are distinguished from other barrier island wetlands by dominance by tree species of (at least potentially) large stature. The Typic Subtype is dominated by combinations of Nyssa, Fraxinus, Liquidambar, Acer, or Quercus nigra, rather than by Taxodium or Salix. Maritime Shrub Swamps are dominated by tall shrubs or small trees, particularly Salix, Persea, or wetland Cornus. Some portions of Maritime Evergreen Forest are marginally wet, but such areas are distinguished by the characteristic canopy dominants of that type, such as Quercus virginiana, Quercus hemisphaerica, or Pinus taeda. The lower strata also are distinctive, with wetland species occurring in Maritime Swamp Forest; however, some species, such as Morella cerifera, may occur in both. Synonyms: Acer rubrum - Nyssa biflora - (Liquidambar styraciflua, Fraxinus sp.) Maritime Swamp Forest (CEGL004082). Ecological Systems: Central Atlantic Coastal Plain Maritime Forest (CES203.261). Sites: Maritime Swamp Forests occur on barrier islands and comparable spits, in well-protected dune swales, edges of dune ridges, and on flats adjacent to freshwater sounds. Soils: Soils are wet sands or mucky sands, most often mapped as Duckston (Typic Psammaquent) or Conaby (Histic Humaquept). Hydrology: Most Maritime Swamp Forests have shallow seasonal standing water and nearly permanently saturated soils. Some may rarely be flooded by salt water during severe storms, but areas that are severely or repeatedly flooded do not recover to swamp forest. -

Vierh is distributed in patches along the Farasan archipelago coast and is the most common mangrove species in the Red Sea. However, to date, no studies have been directed towards understanding its genetic variation in the Farasan archipelago. In this investigation, genetic variations within and among natural populations of Avicennia marina in the Farasan archipelago were studied using 15 microsatellite markers. The study found 142 alleles on 15 loci in nine populations. The observed (Ho) and expected (He) heterozygosity values were 0.351 and 0.391, respectively, which are much lower than those of earlier studies on A. marina in the Arabian Gulf. An inbreeding effect from self-pollination might explain its heterozygote deficiency. Population genetic differentiation (FST = 0.301) was similar to other mangrove species. Our findings suggest that the sea current direction and coastal geomorphology might affect genetic dispersal of A. marina. The more isolated populations with fewer connections by sea currents exhibited lower genetic variation and differentiation between populations. The genetic clustering of populations fell into three main groups—Group 1 (populations of Farasan Alkabir Island), Group 2 (populations of Sajid Island), and Group 3 (mix of one population of Farasan Alkabir Island and a population of Zifaf Island). -

Attempts to develop diets for culture of crabs have resulted in a variety of feeds. The absence of suitable feed either pellet or live food which can promote growth and survival is considered to be the most important lacuna in cultivation of crabs. So searching of economically viable feed to optimize the growth and survival in crabs are very much essential. In the present study the weight gain was higher in the crabs offered with Acetes sp. (86 g) followed by clam meat fed animals (47 g). The crabs fed with minimum amount of Acetes sp. (152 g) and maximum of clam meat (182 g). The FCR value was better in Acetes sp. (1.8) fed animal rather than clam meat fed animals (3.8). The survival rate was higher in Acetes sp. fed animals (92%) and lowest survival (72%) was observed in animals fed with clam meat. The survival was reasonable for both the feeds. But higher survival rate was reported in the animals fed with Acetes sp. than that of clam meat. -

Executive Summary The City of Gold Coast (City) undertook a hydrological study for Pimpama River catchment in December 2014 (City 2014, Ref 1). In the study, the Pimpama River catchment hydrological model was developed using the URBS modelling software. The model was calibrated to three historical flood events and verified against another four flood events. The design rainfalls from 2 to 2000 year annual recurrence intervals (ARIs) of the study were based on study undertaken by Australian Water Engineering (AWE) in 1998 and CRC-FORGE. In early 2015, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) released new IFD (2013) design rainfalls as part of the revision of Engineers Australia’s design handbook ‘Australian Rainfall and Runoff: A Guide to Flood Estimation’. In July 2015, the 2014 calibrated Pimpama hydrological model was used to run the design events using rainfall data obtained from the BOM’s new 2013 IFD tables. This report documents the review of City 2014 model and should be read in conjunction with the City 2014 hydrological study report. The original forest factor, catchment and channel parameters obtained from the 2014 calibrated Pimpama hydrological model were used for this study update. -

They feature prominently in folklore, mythology and other belief systems of the indigenous people of the region, and are of ecological and conservation value, some species supporting significant (albeit often illegal) economic activities (primarily, the snake-skin trade, but also sale of meat and other body parts that purportedly have medicinal properties).
